Very excited for Roma.

Wasn't Computer Chess shot on 1980s videotape? (Or at least, shot to look like 1980s videotape?) I'm not sure I see the benefit of that one on Blu-ray.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

My copy of Une Femme Mariee arrived today. Just within the last week someone from Eureka said this was now OoP which has people scrambling on Bd.com to now find a reasonably priced copy.

I'm a little confused here as it still seems to be available to order on the Eureka website (where I got mine) at a very reasonable price. Do they typically not remove titles that are sold out and just let you know after the order is processed that something actually isn't available?

Just a guess, but just because it's OOP doesn't mean they are sold out. They're probably still selling off their leftover stock. Once they're gone, then they're gone for good.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

That part I get. What I don't understand is why I'm seeing so many posts from people who are scrambling to find it now that it's OoP and in some cases are paying a slight premium for it, when it's sitting there still available direct on the website for a fairly low-ball price.

BTW, This is the second order I've gotten from direct from Eureka, and next to Amazon they've been solid. Cardboard shippers and fairly fast turnaround. While Zavvi's prices are great, I've heard horror stories about their packaging and ship times. In the future I'll likely suck it up and just pay the premium to order from Amazon...unless it's something I can get direct from Eureka.

They probably have a bunch of copies. I'm sure they'll remove it once their stock is gone. It sounds like the title didn't sell well enough for them to make another batch.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

Apparently it sold about as well for Eureka as the Corman films did for Shout.

But now that it's OoP, people suddenly want it. The booklet packed inside is 80 pages (!?!)

In other news, due 9/29

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

Just to update, it is in fact sold out at Eureka now. They didn't list it on the initial page or even the first cart page. You only find out once you hit checkout and are informed it's sold out.

So this was probably just my mistake as I only went as far as the cart page before.

Yeah, I had gotten the PR release Caligari on Blu, as well. I actually have the Eureka DVD, too. Amazon UK will also have it at some point, so I'm not worried.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

Just to be clear, Caligari isn't sold out- Une Femme Mariee is.

And though I'm lusting after the restored CoC as much as anyone, I think I'll be waiting for them to offer a steelbook for it.
As was probably evident from that other thread, I have become smitten with those things.

Caligari screams for a steelbook. Not sure if we're going to get one.

As predicted Amazon UK has the pre-order for Caligari up!

They're also releasing Madame Dubarry the week before Caligari. Afaik, this is only the 2nd release ever on home video (the first was a Grapevine collector's edition).

I've watched the MOC Dubarry (the dvd). I'm not allowed (per the admins) to post reviews here, but i am allowed to link to my reviews elsewhere. Will do so as soon as it's written. Short version: Nice transfer.

Here's a link to the DuBarry review:

The only thing I am unsure of is the region issue. My review copy was (oddly) an R2 NTSC DVD. As such I assume the DVD is R2, & the Blu is R.B. I have an email into them with that question.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

I've received & watched a good portion of Caligari. I'm a couple days away from writing a full review, but without question this is the classic film dvd/blu release of the year, & quite possibly the highest quality restoration ever done of a German silent (Metropolis would be the closest in quality that I'm aware of). If you see a good pre-release price, jump on it!

Will you be comparing the MoC release with the Kino?

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

Greatly looking forward to getting Caligari. Many a time I flirted with buying a DVD release to replace my old Laseridsc- but it seemed to be a Hobson's choice between the Kino or Image discs so I never got either. Each one was lacking in a different way.

Unfortunately this is bundled into a larger order with release dates spread out evenly now till late November. They're usually good about breaking the orders up and sending stuff that is already available out early- but with titles getting released every two weeks, They may not be inclined to ship out three more packages considering what I paid for a total shipping price originally.

Yes. My thinking is that I plan to review the restoration & transfer more than the film; I suspect most who are interested in Caligari have already seen it.

Again, I've already seen enough to know that the big news is the restoration.

Great! I'll be interested to read your findings, especially in light of the controversy surrounding how badly Kino handled the pull-down / frame interpolation on their Nosferatu release.

I'm already to assume that the MOC version will trump KINO's. Just like the MOC version of Nosferatu is better than Kino's.

I've only seen the original Kino (didn't even know they were doing the restored version), but I suspect you're right.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

Apparently Kino has a version planned with no release date yet scheduled. I wasn't aware of that until now & do not have access to a copy. I will be comparing the MOC vs the 2004 Kino.

Here's my review of the MOC Calagari. They again only sent me a dvd, & still haven't answered the Region question. The dvd's picture quality is stunning.
