Gremlins ------> September 29th (Target Exclusive)

Re: Gremlins ------> September 29th (Target Exclusive)
I picked up Wizard of Oz: Emerald Edition and Gremlins (yep!) today at Target.
The Gremlin's Blu-ray show's a 1:85:1 aspect ratio in the specs for anyone that's curious.

I stopped by Target at 11:00 am. They only had 2 Gremlins left and no Emerald Oz, so I'm really glad that I did.

They restock on Fridays (IIRC). Regardless, its not being produced in limited numbers so if you don't get it now, it'll eventually be available in the coming days/weeks.

My local Target had 5 copies this morning at 10am.
I really want this, but I'll probably wait for other stores to get it/Sales.

I don't think Joe Dante lies to the fans the way the studio does, and Gremlins isn't a movie that was just recently in theaters. If Dante says he advised on a new transfer, then I believe him. Whether or not it's the one on this disc is another question, since this disc apparently has no new features and no "anniversary" branding.

Grabbed mine at lunch. For such a crappy like Target in a piss-poor neighborhood they had 5 (now 4) copies of Gremlins and 3 Oz'. I noticed Target stuck their own white sticker on the back covering the UPC but the numbers on the receipt do not match it or any of the numbers or the actual barcode on the artwork.

As a word of warning, users on Blu-ray.com forums (for what it's worth) who have watched the disc already, have mostly seemed dissatisfied if not downright upset with the PQ on this release. The audio, however, is supposed to be great. This certainly does call into question whether or not this is the version Joe Dante helped oversee in restoration. I don't know if I should open this now or not. I really wanted to watch it tonight, but instead I may be making a return to Target.

I can only guess it was delayed because of the 'new' transfer and if they had it, this is it. Or, they didn't have the time/money for the transfer and released whatever they had worked on. It's a 25 year old, low budget film.

Re: Gremlins ------> September 29th (Target Exclusive)
Was Gremlins really considered a low budget film though, I mean in 1984 11 million dollars went a long way (in comparison Temple of Doom was 28mil, so I guess Gremlins would be like a 60mil movie today, which I wouldn't call low budget)... and I'm surprised it's sort of getting treated like a red headed stepchild... this movie was a huge hit and is one of the 80's biggest classic movies. I'm getting this release regardless but I think a lot of people are talking like this is some turd that just got dumped.

I have no idea how much $11 mil is worth 25 years later. Isn't their a website which calculates it? Goonies was $19 mil!

I just caught a great 70mm print of this recently. It'll be interesting to see how the Blu-ray stacks up.

I just popped the BD in and started the film. So far the transfer looks solid. I'll be seeing the film in 35mm hopefully within the next few weeks so I can compare the two.
The BD has a trailer for Gremlins 2. When is that coming out as I'd buy that tomorrow for $22.99 as well.

I stopped by Target to pick up their version of WoO, and they had about 5 copies of this. It's one of my all time favorites, but I'm waiting to see some reviews before I jump on it. $23 bucks seemed high for an older movie and a relatively bare-bones disc.
I'll eventually upgrade this. My DVD copy is one of the old Warner cardboard cases with the widescreen/fullscreen flip disk, and no real features aside from the trailer, but I'm holding off for reviews, and to see if we can catch any sales when this gets a wider release.

I'd buy that for sure - Gremlins 2 was a great sequel that wasn't just a rehash of the original, plus that teaser trailer for it is one of my favourites of all time - just brilliant.

I don't know what all the complaints are about. Gremlins looks great. The image is clear, color reproduction is excellent, and the drop off to black is very gradual. Plenty of detail in darker scenes.
There's a softness to the image that is inherent in the way it was shot. I don't know what people were expecting, but having seen the movie on film not too long ago, this is how it's meant to look. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this to any Gremlins fan.
Now just give me Gremlins 2 already, damn it.

I hate the SE cover... why not use the original art that was on the first DVD?
