Re: Gremlins ------> September 29th (Target Exclusive)
I get the impression that Joe Dante doesn't like part 2 (or part 1 for that matter) he just comes off as hating the fact that he directed the movies. He kind of bashes part 2 on the commentary and he is dead set against making a part 3, but seems to embrace remaking the original. Don't ask me why I feel this way, I might be completely wrong, but I just get the impression he doesn't like them, especially part 2.

I don't care if he liked it or not..Warner owns the film not him. It's not like he is Spielberg/Lucas and can dictate how/when the film should be released. His dislike for Gremlins 2 didn't hold up the previous DVD releases. Just hope Gremlins sells well enough that Warner releases Gremlins 2.

Funny how Universal dropped off the Blu earth and won't release any of their crap HD DVD titles on Blu-ray. Do they even have anything announced for Q4 that was previously HD DVD?

I just picked this up. I trust Supermallet's opinion on PQ. Now the love for Gremlins 2 is interesting. I have been under the impression it wasn't well liked. I saw it once on initial theatrical release and didn't care for it. I'll give it another look on it's Blu release!

Yeah, I was just thinking about that earlier today. It would've been a great irony if the Target exclusive of Gremlins and Snow White came out on the same day. I guess a one week seperation isn't too bad...

I don't know what all the complaints are about. Gremlins looks great. The image is clear, color reproduction is excellent, and the drop off to black is very gradual. Plenty of detail in darker scenes.
There's a softness to the image that is inherent in the way it was shot. I don't know what people were expecting, but having seen the movie on film not too long ago, this is how it's meant to look. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this to any Gremlins fan.

I've seen a lot of "classics" (or what we would consider classics) from the 80s in 35mm over the past year. These films never looked that great in 35mm to begin with.
It blows my mind that some people expect films on Blu-ray to be crystal clear in quality and all demo material right from the get go. Let's consider the source material, please. This mentality of thinking is why we have transfers that have massive amounts of DNR.

Haven't seen it since. I should probably give it another shot to see if my opinion changes.

^Definitely try it again. I remember seeing Gremlins 2 at a sneak preview before it came out, got a free T-shirt. I loved the shit out of it at the time, but of course, I was 10 and really into Looney Tunes etc... and I know that nostalgia can go along way to enjoying a movie but I'm sure if you're expectations are now in check, you can probably enjoy it for what it is.

To me, Gremlins 2 isn't so much a direct sequel to the original (even though it technically is, I know I know) as it is a wacky spin on the concept, and I love it to death when I view it as such. I mean...come on...

I think a lot has to do with how you are perceiving the intent with this film.

Re: Gremlins ------> September 29th (Target Exclusive)
But I revisited it again when I was a little older, (saw it originally at 12, probably revisitied again in my mid 20s), and you pick up some things that you didn't appreciate before. It's kind of a send up of all the excess of the 80s, and it's just a wacky reimagining of the first, in a different setting.
I don't see it as a traditional sequel either... maybe revisit it. You might be surprised.

Oddly enough, I saw Gremlins 2 in theaters when it opened (I was about 12) and I loved it.
Recently, my gf bought me a copy on DVD and we watched it... and could hardly stand it. Pales in comparison to the original, imo.

I love them both but, "Gremlins" is clearly the better of the two. I'm dying to watch this but it still freak my kids out a little bit so, I gotta hold off or do a late night view. If anyone is in the Okemos , MI area and has not already picked up a copy, the Target on Marsh rd. has about 5 or 6 copies in the blu ray section still available.

Gremlins 2 is a Looney Tunes come to life. Taken on those terms, it's pretty much perfect. And the effects work is so much better than in the first.
And come on, who doesn't love Phoebe Cates' President's Day speech, and all the comments from the Clampett Building?

Gremlins 2 is a direct sequel, but it's also a spoof of the original, kind of like Crank 2. A lot of people also didn't like Crank 2 while others enjoyed it for how ridiculous it was.
I found it funny that Gremlins came out the same day as The Wizard of Oz, since the Mrs. Deagle character is such an obvious nod to the Wicked Witch of the West.
