If Criterion hadn't release the title originally on Laserdisc, I would agree with you. Considering the situation with catalog, and the fact that they did release Robinson Crusoe on Mars, it's not out of the question at this point. (But I won't hold my breath over it...)

Ya know, I'm really getting sick of these stupid games Criterion plays.
Why don't they just tell us what fucking titles they're working on?

There was no hint for "Y Tu Mama Tambien" so maybe this is the year that they are going to finally release the movie.

Still waiting for Y Tu Mama Tambien. Been years since they gave that hint...I'm still waiting for it.

Yeah, I'm fine with the doodles. They are fun. I just wish they would let us know the status of movies like Y Tu Mama Tambien. It's not like they haven't made it obvious that they plan on releasing it, it wouldn't be spoiling anything for them to let us know a rights issue still being worked out, or something with the transfer, etc.

Exactly. Don't tell me when exactly it's coming out. Just tell me every once in a while how it is coming along or something.

this would be ideal for titles they've been teasing for a long time now. Just making a simple announcement would be nice. We know everything doesn't always happen how we'd like, but just a quick note does wonders

The behind the scenes stuff on this can be very contentious. Criterion was working with Lynch on an Eraserhead release, and somebody leaked that it was being worked on, and Lynch flipped out and pulled the plug. I can definitely see them being gun shy when it comes to announcements, considering that they have to license every title and appease who knows how many egos per release.

The New Year's drawing is basically a marketing gimmick, are not binding in any way, and in my opinion kind of fun. Every once in a while there's a situation like Y Tu Mama Tambien and unforseen circumstances keep them from releasing something right away. Otherwise, they usually deliver on their teases. Between the monthly release announcements, the monthly newsletter clues, the New Years drawing, their facebook page, and the annual Wexner Center talk, I feel like Criterion keeps its fans pretty well informed on what's going on.
That said, I need Picnic At Hanging Rock and I need it NOW!

I'm far more interested the prospects of Criterion putting out a blu-ray of Lynch's Mulholland Dr. than Eraserhead.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
IIRC, the Eraserhead debacle was in the DVD era, and the falling out with Criterion prompted Lynch to release the DVD independently through his website.
And I would kill for Criterion to release any Lynch film on BD (except for Wild at Heart or Inland Empire, both of which I'd be happy to never watch again).

What does that make Barbra Streisand that almost took out Criterion when she got all snippy about The Prince of Tides and cost them a ton of money... Disc were pressed and finished and she canned the release back in the day.
