Only the crazier directors. Mann is more known for re-editing stuff, like on the Last of the Mohicans release. I'm fairly optimistic this release will retain it's original color palate. A few months ago MGM-HD was showing Thief, and it looked damn good.

have you seen the screen captures in the blu-ray.com review - it's pretty extreme in the 'blue' color department. Someone noted it looks nothing like what was shown on MGM-HD.

Just did. Wow, those few screenshots look nothing like the MGM-HD showings. Damn, so now Mann seems to have jumped on board with fucking with the color palate.

In addition to being edited differently, Last of the Mohicans was also significantly darkened on Blu-ray.
Mann is one of those directors who can't stop tinkering with his old movies. He doesn't know when to let go.
With that said, I wouldn't trust the ancient transfer that has aired on MGM-HD to be accurate to the movie's correct color palette.

Why so blue??? Fuck
First thing I noticed that was a lot of blue on Thief...unfortunately I will buy it anyway. The DVD is unwatchable.

Michael Mann & William Friedkin are both color blind.

Have any of you seem 'The Great Beauty'? It's one of the year's best films. I reviewed it upon it's release: http://indieethos.wordpress.com/2013...e-superficial/
I saw it this afternoon - and I must say my initial impression of the movie was the same for the over praised Holy Motors:
huh? whaaaa .... ??
the one aspect I really loved was the music, both the classical and the dance music and the 5.1 mix was just evocative and beautiful.

found it:
'Holy Motors'
the more I've thought about 'The Great Beauty' (late last night/this morning) - the more it's impressed me.
I was overhearing a couple of woman after the screening and she was apologizing to her friend for inviting her to see this, I think that neither of them were that enamored with the film - I've only apologized maybe less than five times where I think I would have enjoyed the more on my own or with someone completely different (those movies were 'The Man from London' and 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - two totally polar opposites and non-genre related films).

He tweaked the look of the French Connection on it's first blu-ray release, but it was thankfully re-released to look like it did in the theaters.
Here's a shot from the tweaked version and here's a shot from the blu-ray released that fixed the the look back to normal.

That must be the clearest hint Criterion has ever issued.

Criterion just put up Bong Joon-ho’s Top 10 Criterions... does this mean we might see his new movie Snowpiercer show up on Criterion soon? (or maybe his classic Memories of Murder - though I already have that on blu)

But 'Great Beauty' is not for everyone. My wife didn't like it. She dozed off during the revelatory finale, but when I explained what she missed, she appreciated the film a little more. It's not a straight narrative and is interested in presenting the idea of beautiful experiences as something you cannot over-conceptualize.

Trying to find some information on this, but looking at the wording and the screencaps, it seems that 'Beales' is in SD on the Grey Gardens disc? A bit surprising, considering both films come from the same sources.
