dvdbeaver on BLOW OUT

...this Blu-ray has a wonderfully supportive feel that I'll assume looks even better than it may have theatrically - 30-years ago. I have only high praise for the video quality.
can't wait to pick this up

The only announcement I want to hear is that there was so much backlash for the joke that they have decided to go ahead and release CHUD.

My respect for Criterion would double if they would be willing to unabashedly give the Criterion treatment to that kind of genre fare. This is the understatement of the year but Criterion definitely comes off as pretentious (the quality of the releases gives them a pass regardless) but there used to be a time (in the laserdisc days) when they weren't beyond putting out movies as opposed to snobby art films.

They have already given treatment to those type of films on DVD.

They have (or had?) The Blob...I think they're pretty varied just for having that.

On top of that, there's also Carnival Of Souls, Robinson Crusoe On Mars, and the films in the Monsters And Madmen set, just off the top of my head...

Apparently, they updated the audio specs for Naked and Beauty And The Beast, meaning that they will probably have Blu-Ray upgrades announced today...

Where is the Criterion release of SUSPIRIA? That would be pretty epic I'm sure.

In addition to what others have said about Criterion's existing library of genre films, it was also easier once upon a time for them to get the rights to films. In the Laserdisc days, you would get things like Ghostbusters in the collection, a movie that in the heyday of DVD, Sony never would've split sales or rights on.

I think the good news is that as DVD is on the decline and people are still concerned Blu-Ray will be a passing fad, the studios are becoming less protective of the rights to their films because there isn't as much money to be made from them, and we'll see bigger and bigger films being licensed to Criterion.

Your comments cannot be an understatement because they are your opinion. Not everyone sees Criterion as "pretentious' and the films they release as "snobby art films".

I'm well aware of the fact that snobby and pretentious art film fans exist.

Cut it out.

Nothing worthwhile is going to come of a statement like that.

Yeah, everything else about that review was right on point, including the obligatory "Boobies!" screen capture.

Leon Morin is rumored to be getting a July release from Criterion.

I'm happy for both.

I agree with droidguy, with Blu-ray becoming more niche, I think we'll see some bigger titles released like the old days of Laserdisc. I wish they could work out a deal with Warner Brothers. It's a shame we don't have any James Dean yet on Blu-ray.

High & Low -- Very happy, one of my favorites.

Beauty & the Beast -- Worthy upgrade.

Naked -- Love the new cover.

Life During Wartime -- Looks interesting.

The Music Room -- Finally! Satyajit Ray has made it to the collection. Would definitely prefer his more well known works but I can't complain.

Leon Morin, Priest -- I love me some Melville. Definitely looking forward to this one.
