Does anyone know why Black Narcissus isn't rentable as a Blu-ray on Netflix? Thanks.

Netflix has been terrible lately about stocking new Criterion releases.

The first Blu-ray encode of SEVEN SAMURAI arrived today. Our restoration team has really outdone themselves:

This snapshot (yes, taken on a camera phone) shows the file, made from our restored ...HD master, that will eventually be replicated, packaged and sold on Blu-ray this October.

....eh....pic from a phone doesn't do it justice. I'm sure it's nice but the limitations of the phone really don't show off much and in fact would make you believe it's not a good HD master.

Criterion is great. My Red Shoes Blu-ray case and cover from the BN sale came crushed. Disc and booklet were fine. They sent me another one for free! I was willing to pay shipping or more too!

Soderbergh's Solaris is coming, presumably on Blu-ray.

False Rumor

Boy, that was quick. Disappointing, as I was hoping a Soderbergh Solaris Blu-ray would also mean a Tarkovsky Solaris Blu-ray.

That miscommunication is probably the early rumblings of Tarvoksky's film coming to Blu-ray, though.

Has there been any word about Following? I thought I heard that Criterion was releasing it, but haven't heard anything in awhile...

They talked about it openly in some of the press following the IFC deal, so I think its a safe bet, though I don't think there is a time frame yet. Same with Y Tu Mama Tambien, which I'm looking forward to.

Yeah, not sure why the assumption would be for Soderbergh's Solaris when Criterion already has Tarkovsky's in the library...either way, this seems to be a great sign that Tarkovsky's version is coming to Blu-ray, so still good news!

How about a double-disc Blu-ray set of both the Tarkovsky film and the Soderbergh film?

I thought everyone hated the Soderbergh version? I haven't seen it.

Great news, looking forward to having the complete collection of Nolan's films in Blu-ray...

Soderbergh's remake falls into a very odd category. It's not as extreme and alienating as the Tarkovsky original, and will not please fans of that film. Yet it's also far too "arty" and lacking in lasers or explosions for a general sci-fi audience, so it won't please them either.

If you can set aside those preconceptions, it's actually a very good film.

I reviewed Solaris for AICN and spent more time describing how half the audience walked out throughout the movie. I've never seen that before, especially at a screening.

I prefer the Tarkovsky, but also think Soderbergh's version is very good.

Its one of the few remakes I prefer. (and i cant wait for the BD)

(yes, yes the original was a milestone in many ways, but my personal experience is that the original is sleep inducing and just not as enjoyable)

I've yet to see anyone of them but I've always wanted to see the original. Didn't know that Soderbergh did the remake.

IMHO, the Soderbergh version more than holds its own, (and I'm not a big Clooney fan, either).
