Our April Titles

Coming in April: three indelible tales of Black urban life from a vital auteur; a stylized revenge thriller set in 1960s Los Angeles; a blockbuster biblical epic from a legendary British comedy troupe; a pre-Code jewel glittering with innuendo and sophistication; the most sensual of all Hollywood noirs; six woman-centered features directed by one of Japan’s greatest actors; and, fresh from theaters, a ravishing vision of a world where humans have forsaken dreams for immortality.

That John Singleton set sounds great. However I would have preferred Higher Learning over Baby Boy. But, I guess it is a hood collection.

And Point Blank is a fun old school 60s action movie.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Yeah, Criterion basically doesn't exist for me outside of the 50% sale (or used).

There are very few titles that would compel me to pay full price for a Criterion release these days.

$49.95? Why I wouldn't pay more than $15 for it.

Just got $53 and change deposited into my PayPal account for a Criterion settlement.
(I think this might’ve been a Criterion channel settlement)

Our May Titles

Coming in May: one of the steamiest erotic thrillers ever made; a strikingly raw debut feature about race, class, and sexuality; a disturbingly prescient ecofeminist parable; a moving tale of one family’s generations of trauma and healing; a freewheeling showbiz drama about a taboo-shattering comedian; a crime thriller set in a squalid postwar Japan; and, fresh from theaters, a loving snapshot of a vanished 1970s New York.

They have announced the May releases, and Body Heat is coming. After the recent releases of Altered States, History of Violence, and Kiss of the Spider-Woman I hope that they keep their journey through William Hurt's filmography by releasing Children of a Lesser God.

Stray Dog, finally. It's one of the few DVDs I still have waiting to be upgraded.

Definitely in for Body Heat at the next sale. That was the epitome of Kathleen Turner at her hottest. And it was a good thriller too

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I have held off on upgrading the Kurosawa films cause I keep thinking that they will end up doing a boxset like they have done for Bergman and Fellini. I mean they did a super expensive limited one on dvd with films that were exclusive to that set, there's no reason why they couldn't do it again on blu-ray.

Fresh Kill looks interesting, not sure how much more dystopia I can take right now though.

I know Stray Dog is a Kurosawa, but not really up my alley.

It's very different from the samurai films he's more famous for. A noirish trip through the underworld (including a near dialogue-free sequence that runs a good 10 minutes or more) isn't for everyone.

That said it's a great film, will be purchasing at the next Criterion sale it shows up on.

I loved it, but it probably isn’t for everyone.

For this group of releases, definitely Body Heat and Sentimental Value for me.

It’s possible but there’s a ton they need to get right first. They need to upgrade the Eclipse titles, which are below DVD standard. And it’s been 15 years and they still haven’t given a separate release to Madadayo which is only in the box set. It would be pretty sad if that still ends up only in a set.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The scene in Body Heat where Kathleen Turner is looking all sexy in her white dress while William Hurt smashes the back screen door to grab her is going to look and sound great in 4K.
