The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Hmmm. So the good news is that Criterion has definitely gone with the unaltered international version of Eyes Wide Shut for its release. But DVD Beaver has captured screenshots that reveal--AGAIN--a teal-leaning presentation that sucks some warmth out of the image. See the full review here: Eyes Wide Shut 4K UHD - Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Sydney Pollack, Leelee Sobieski

Transfers done under Criterion's watch always seem to have tweaks in the color temperature from earlier releases.
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
There is a 35mm fan scan that's been floating around online for a year or two. The new Criterion caps are a much better match. The print has a lot of teal. Based on the dvd beaver caps, this is 100% an upgrade.

A scan of a theatrical print will not have accurate color timing. The print itself was timed to be projected through a xenon lamp with specific color temperature. The scanner will not match that, and will add a green bias that shifts blues to teal. That needs to be compensated for in the digital color grading.

Flash sale is tomorrow.
They sent me a $10 code and I have never even subscribed to the channel.

Transfer looks gorgeous. Tbh, I'm not a pixel peeper on the level of that other sight.
Finished the movie. I might like it better than Wages of Fear. More gritier and love the bridge scene.
I think I have the WoF blu-ray (I don't see it listed in any of my tracking databases but I could swear I bought it) in one of my many boxes (I don't feel like going through 15 boxes) but it's available on Kanopy so I might revisit it one day.

Weird. I wonder what their rationale was for providing the discount code to random users rather than everyone. I’ve often spent big during their sales over the years, but in the last couple of offerings I’ve simply run out of titles I want at this point, and have everything I need to own from their catalog (about 300+), so maybe that triggered an enticement, so to speak? Don’t know. I could only find on title of interest this time but it will keep until they acquire some more titles that I need to own.

The Wes Anderson set arrived last night. Overall, it looks good, but mine has a tiny smudge on the front cover that won't come out. Others have reported some QC issues like smudges on the booklets and blade markings on the spines, so I guess I'm luckier than them.
I'm archiving my discs now... Hopefully no issues!

Our February Titles
Coming in February: a prescient X-ray of the corrupted soul of a corporate-dominated America; an existential noir thriller set in 1940s California; four elegant, bawdy pre-Code movie musicals; and, fresh from theaters, a darkly comic, gonzo revenge thriller. Plus: now on 4K UHD, a psychologically complex western and a nearly wordless comedy about confusion in an age of high technology; and, on stand-alone Blu-ray, a benchmark of American independent cinema.

I got my Facebook settlement money, all $35.50 on a prepaid Mastercard which turned out to be harder to use than I thought but I found someone on eBay selling a sealed copy of the 4K Biollante disc at a price barely more than I would paid at B&N and got that ordered.

Too bad The Man Who Wasn’t There doesn’t include the color version as a bonus, even if only in SD. I vaguely recall that was only available on DVD overseas in Korea or elsewhere.
