The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Unless you have an independent shop you like to support, I couldn't imagine paying more than 50% msrp on any Criterion title. The longest you'd ever have to wait is like four months.

Pretty much and until it comes out and goes on sale, I can rewatch it anytime on Netflix.
The people who will likely buy it right away will most definitely be impulse buyers and not knowledgeable on how Criterion sales work.

Just getting Five Easy Pieces and Charade out of those June announcements. I do want to see Magellan but don't want to blind buy it. The Criterion Channel will probably be playing it.

That’s pretty much always true for me, but there are exceptions. I didn’t mind paying $10 more to have Godzilla vs. Biollante on day one, for instance.

I guess I should get Hairspray! since I knew someone who's a background dancer during Corny Collins Show segments. She was a ballgirl for the Baltimore Orioles and married a guy that worked for me in the Navy. I never asked her about the movie.
Back when the DVD of Charade was released, wasn't there an issue with it? I don't remember the detail as to if it was availability or disc issues.

Yet to see it, but I'll buy it. I'm always hesitant to watch early Waters films (I still haven't seen Pink Flamingos, because I know of the notorious scene...), but I find myself liking them. I really enjoyed Multiple Maniacs, and I nearly pissed myself laughing at Female Trouble.

I'm also interested in Hairspray.
I see they got Colleen Fitzpatrick to participate. Later on, she had a brief pop career as "Vitamin C", but she also fronted one of my favorite 90s bands, Eve's Plum.

I don't think I've even watched the Charade Criterion DVD I've had for a while. I should watch that.

I just got around to watching my copy of the CC blu-ray of Charade a few months ago that I've had for a long time, I think that I am good with that and don't need to upgrade it.

Hairspray is a done deal. I'll probably grab Five Easy Pieces as well; I have the Blu-Ray from the BBS set (2010? 2011?) but I think it would be worth the upgrade.
Charade I'm iffy about. I absolutely adore the movie and it's a new restoration apparently but I've bought this movie so many times now I don't know if the juice is really worth the squeeze.

July Announcements have been made: Elephant Man (now in 4K), Hud, Crying Game, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Cruel Story of Youth, The Love that Remains, and a Mike Mills boxset with Beginners, 20th Century Women and C'mon C'mon.
Cruel Story of Youth will also include Oshima's first film A Town of Love and Hope, the Mills set will include a bunch of his short films. A pretty stacked month overall.

There are some titles that have been on my upgrade list for a while. Nice announcements.

0/7 for me.
Still have a bunch of backlog titles to pick up once I'm gainfully employed again.

Is Hud the first time a Paul Newman movie has been in the Criterion Collection????? That’s pretty crazy.
I know there’s a teleplay he did in some box set.

The closest they came is Burden of Dreams, a documentary not directed by him, on his film Fitzcarraldo.
He has a minimum of 7 films that are worthy of inclusion in the collection. I'm sure it's a licensing thing and not an issue on quality of the films.

Criterion and Every Frame A Painting (the latter of which hasn’t been very active in nearly a decade, aside from a small burst of uploads last year) have co-uploaded the visual essay from the new edition of Tsui Hark’s THE BLADE, which does a pretty good job illustrating how this picture diverged from tradition and kinda earns its place despite generally underperforming during its initial release in Hong Kong.

Has Criterion released nearly every John Waters movie?. The only movie I have ever seen of his is A Dirty Shame and hope one day Criterion might get a hold of the rights for a high definition physical media release since it's only on dvd.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
With Desperate Living, they've have released everything John Waters did from 1970-1988, which were all films distributed by New Line. Pecker and A Dirty Shame were both distributed by Fine Line, which was a sub-division of New Line, so I would think it's possible for Criterion to release them. That would leave Cecil B. Demented as the only film to not have a Blu-ray release. It was distributed by Artisan, which I believe means Lionsgate would have the rights?

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Cecil B. Demented was distributed by Artisan back in the day, but the film is owned by Studio Canal. I'd expect those old distribution deals to have expired by now, so it would depend on who Studio Canal chooses to license it out to now. Criterion has licensed other Studio Canal titles (Mulholland Drive, for one), so it's possible they could get it if they want it.
