Stalker is one of those films I've always heard about but never got around to seeing...I guess I'm going to get my wish.

Definitely in for STALKER. I've only seen snippets so I'm excited to finally see this in its full glory.

i'm not really familiar with Tarkovsky or Stalker, obviously. any good as a blind buy? i like the premise, but not sure if too arty or something like that...

Are you into artistic foreign films?

If you like Bergman, and to a lesser extent Antonioni - then the odds are in your favour of liking Tarkovsky. Otherwise, just stream/rent/download it first.

Which is really the approach everyone should take nowadays. There's really little reason to blind-buy anything today.

Every trip out to the theater is a 'blind buy'.
With the exception that you don't have anything physical at the end to trade or sell off...or keep and enjoy again.

You're right... but I never endorsed blind-watching a movie at a theatre either.
But at least a theatre offers some advantages for some people... not having to wait for it to be released on DVD/BD, watching it on a bigger/better screen with better sound quality, and offering a night out.

Blind-buying a disc doesn't offer any advantage over streaming/renting/downloading, and simply adds a unnecessary risk of wasting your money.

That restoration looks like it will be like watching the film for the first time. There's so much detail that the current DVD leaves in a blurry haze.

One of the preeminent intellectual films, and concurrently visually splendorous and austere, but as slow as molasses and very long. Yes, arty to the nth degree. It's the pinnacle of Tarkovsky's oeuvre and I find it an enrapturing experience, but I'm sure many viewers are bored to tears. Not a good candidate for a blind buy.

Having said that, I already own the old DVD and will not be buying this new release.

If you can make it through this without fast forwarding, then maybe.
