Sorry about the jokers here. But I think you came with a legit question, and the list in the link above is actually full of great suggestions.

I've got a few of the movies on that list and I am well aware of the issues with Watership Down.

Would love for Criterion to keep updating that list.

Would you all say Black Stallion is ok for an almost 8 year old?

Yes. I wouldn't hesitate to show it to someone that young. It's definitely a family film.

Thanks, glad to see Criterion expanding their horizons these past few years.

It's based on a pretty famous children's book, isn't it?

I find American parents too prudish on what to show their kids.

I've encountered much of the opposite. Like my young kid cousins watching Silence of the Lambs & laughing hysterically at Buffalo Bill.

They'll see it anyway with the Internet nowadays.

Ah, that's nothing. My wife said she and her cousins would beg her parents to re-play Santa Sangre from Alejandro Jodorowsky when they were asked what movie they wanted to watch with a chant of the film's titles. Even Brontis Jodorowsky was disturbed when I told him about this.

Oh, and my wife is from Mexico, so American's are still prudish.

There's something to be said about what many American parents find okay and not - the South Park movie comes to mind "horrific and deplorable violence are okay as long as you don't say any naughty words" - but there's nothing wrong with making sure your children are emotionally ready for the ideas being presented.

My wife and I probably push the envelope with some TV we watch with our son (even some Doctor Who eps can be a little scary), but we do our best to shield him from concepts he's simply not ready for. It's not a matter of keeping him sheltered, but of making sure it's a progression of ideas and how to deal with them.

Have Criterion been able to license any WB titles? Badlands was a special case -- I think the original producer still holds enough ownership rights to make a home video deal independently of WB, even though it may be listed as a WB film. Also Short Cuts and maybe My Own Private Idaho were New Line and they were able to make their own deals before WB folded them.

Anyway, if WB isn't changing you may have a while to wait. If there's something on the horizon with them I'd be glad to hear it.

Word a few months back (maybe it was discussed in their annual Wexner Center talk?) was that they had been able to secure licensing for a handful of WB films. I vaguely recall something about Criterion giving WB a wish list that was obviously unrealistic, but then were surprised at just what WB was willing to give up.

I hope Blow-Up & The Devils are on that list.

Don't know about Blow-Up, but I'm pretty sure The Devils has been mentioned as coming at some point.

Yes, I have heard of several WB movies that Criterion has likely licensed.

come hell or high water - they'd have to pry 'The Devils' out of Warner's dead clammy hands - I'm probably eating my words here, but pigs would fly prior to Warner's letting Criterion release a bluray edition of 'The Devils' - I'm sure we'd see the same version that BFI released but not the version that actually restored the complete infamous 'rape of Christ' scene.

I'd assume these following scenes are now lost to the winds but the perverted side of me would love to see the cut scenes:
Spoiler:
Sister Jeanne using the charred bone as a dildo / and her holy water colonic enema defecation on the altar scene

As nice as the Criterion version of The Devils would be, it isn't likely.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

My mistake. I thought The Devils had been more or less confirmed, but I did some googling and realized that it was just that Peter Becker (head of Criterion) had mentioned in interviews in recent years that they have been trying to get the rights. Once word of a potential Criterion deal for WB titles came out, in conjunction with the BFI release of the Devils, such as it is, stoked the flames of the rumor fire quite a bit.

I guess I'll have to hold on to my Angel Digital dvd which is the closest thing to the uncut version.
If only Martin Scorsese could round up some high profile filmmakers to bust Warner's chops.
