And King of Cups makes those two look like Michael Bay movies.

even though the Washington Post review of this was vicious and tore it a new a**hole - I still want to see this, since I missed it's brief theatrical run.

I'd rank it among the top 10 films of the 00's.

so is
Making “The New World,” a documentary shot during the production of the film in 2004, directed and edited by Austin Jack Lynch

the 10-part 'making of' that was on the first DVD edition, since the 'extended cut' had no extras, or is it something completely different?

It's pretty neat. I have the German BD import.

I don't know if many would recommend it as a blind buy.

I saw it in the theater and was thoroughly bored. The pace was glacial but it was pretty to look at. But that's just my opinion. I haven't seen it since and have not had a desire to revisit it.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I loved the previous Malick films and was excited to hear that Malick was making another film (The New World) - but I was disappointed. It was merely passable and I have no desire to see it again. The Tree of Life was great, and now he seems to be stumbling again.

The artwork is decent enough but I really don't like the box with that's just plopped in the corner with the title. It looks like someone just copy/pasted a text-box over the artwork. And why are the words cut off?

I personally actually liked Knight of Cups. But yeah its def not for everyone and is certaily more "out there" than Tree of Life, though it won't put you to sleep like To the Wonder did

As a fan of Malick's first three films I wasn't too crazy about it. For me it marks the beginning of his overindulgence and with every film after it just got worse.

Muriel, or The Time Of Return
More Alain Resnais is always good.

I'll never watch Tree of Life again. What a waste. The New World was 100% better.

People all seem to be in agreement that Badlands, Days of Heaven, and Thin Red Line are great. You don't meet many folks who dislike those films, but people run SO hot or cold on everything after. I didn't much care for The New World, but there are people who declare it his very best film. I can't even begin to get my head around how they could feel that way, it REALLY didn't do it for me. On the other hand I loved The Tree of Life and was hugely impressed, yet there are tons of people who dump all kinds of shit on it. It's strange how the films are so polarizing.

You have a short memory. Critics aside, a lot of people disliked those movies back when they were first released. They grew to be more liked over time, but at first they were definitley disliked by many who first saw them. Badlands pissed off a lot of people who went in expecting Bonnie & Clyde, similarly, Thin Red Line pissed off a lot of people who went in expecting Saving Private Ryan. It wasn't until year later, divorced from those expectations, that people began appreciating those films on their own terms. Give them time, and people will feel the same about Malick's more recent work as well.

Some of the covers could be better. Did they hire some artsy fartsy, hoity toity fancy shmancy hipsters over the last 3 years for commissions? Where's the same crew from Laserdisc?
Same with the encoding for the encoding. Are they dropping booklets? Unheard of. Alright wave but could be better.
