Per the Criterion site, MSRP is $99.99, and they have it for pre-order for $79.99. I'm guessing Amazon has it mis-priced right now.

I think I paid $1 at Fry's for my Mill Creek copy of Squid & the Whale (in a 2 pack with Running with Scissors).

I do wish I could stream a half-decent version of OEJ before I buy it, as every DVD looks like hell, but awesome news. Looks like we'll finally have a proper release of it.

I was on the fence about LWC, since I have the Animeigo set, but then I saw the Amazon misprice.

I got The Squid And The Whale on a double-feature BD for 3 bucks new which included Running With Scissors. Great movie but I don't see it worth the upgrade.

That LW&C set may be a misprice but I'm sure I can acquire it at the next BN sale at the same/similar price with coupons.

Snake's in Texas, y'all. His math was right (for him, because he only thinks of himself)
I hope they don't cancel the $39.99 orders, but they're definitely within their rights to do so.

It's not a drastic price mistake. Barnes & Noble will eventually offer the set at 50% off. Given Amazon's bargaining power with distributors, I suspect this was an intentional loss leader at their unit cost. You start seeing Amazon pull these kind of stunts as they begin to ramp up for the all-important Q3 and Q4.
Criterion pulls in affluent consumer demographics, which is Amazon's primary target. Amazon does very little by mistake...

I checked my order details and it seems they are honoring the price even though it is back up to $99.99. As a couple of folks already pointed out...with coupons and the 50% off sale this set could probably be acquired for $60 or more off of the msrp. Since I do not do the Barnes and Noble thing I am glad I got in on the $39.99 + tax price. A 3 disc criterion for less than 44 including tax and shiping works for me.

However it happened, it hit #1 on Amazon's bestseller list (Bluray/Action&Adventure). Pretty good for a pulpy samurai series.
For as long as it stayed up, I'm also beginning to suspect it might have been something to drive traffic.
