Does anyone know how quickly the criterion reward points get added to your account? I’m about $35 shy of the $50 threshold. I wanted to use that to bring the Wes Anderson set down a tad more during half off. Helps me justify the cost I guess.
Just not sure if I should place an order now to get to 500 or place two during half off.

I think it's immediately.

Wow I had no idea. Checking my Amazon history, I paid just under $9 for it in 2010. And in typical DVDTalk fashion I have yet to see it.

GDT's Frankenstein was expected, but K-Pop Demon Hunters is exciting because I know it will piss a lot of the Criterion snobs off.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I had forgotten that Frankenstein was a GDT project, might be worth looking into.

But K Pop Demon Hunters is an absolute must buy. Fantastic to see Criterion giving a title like this a place in the collection.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I’ve found a number of Criterion’s previous Netflix acquisitions to be questionable in terms of their cultural or pop-cultural ‘importance’ (as per the label’s m.o.), but I certainly figured KPDH had more than proven itself worthy of inclusion as part of whatever deal the two companies have in place. I haven’t seen FRANKESTEIN and it definitely didn’t seem to have the same global, cross-cultural impact, but it makes sense in the context of their long history with GDT’s films.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Frankenstein isn't that good, but my guess is that Del Toro has a similar arrangement as Wes Anderson where all of his movies are contractually destined for Criterion.

I can't find the tweet but recently Del Toro stated that Frankenstein would have an extended cut.

This isn't the tweet but a mention of the extended cut

Guillermo Del Toro Confirms New Version Of Netflix's Frankenstein

Guillermo del Toro has revealed that an extended version of his critically acclaimed adaptation of Frankenstein is on the way.

The director confirmed the news at the Sundance Film Festival during a screening of a 4K restoration of Cronos, his directorial debut film. According to attendees of the event, del Toro shared that the longer cut of Frankenstein had already been completed. And, while he didn't offer a specific date, he mentioned that it would be released in the near future.

The audience also claimed that del Toro dubbed the alternate cut as an "all the stitches" version of his adaptation of Frankenstein. Judging by his comments, it is safe to assume that the upcoming project will include all the content that didn't make it to the final version of the film that was released both theatrically and on Netflix.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The Netflix cut felt like it had 2-3 critical scenes excised from it, especially towards the end. Be interesting to see if their inclusion improves the movie overall (which I really liked, but not loved).

I thought "Frankenstein" was great. My pick for the second best film of 2025. I'll be definitely picking that up when it's released.

Also, if you weren't aware, "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" is finally coming soon from Criterion. Laura Dern recently mentioned it on recent her Criterion Closet Picks. She said they were working on the extras now. Cannot freaking wait!

I just paid $30 for the old MGM DVD of Kurosawa’s Rhapsody in August, so you’re welcome to the rest of you when Criterion announces a 4K edition later this year.

flansered 03-09-26 08:24 AM

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Wow I had no idea that it was going for that much now. I think I got my MGM dvd back at either a Big Lots or out of a $5 bin at a grocery store.

Dan 03-09-26 10:48 AM

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Yeah I remember seeing it in clearance bins many years ago, but never grabbed it. Finally had the urge last week since it’s one of a handful of Kurosawa films I’ve yet to watch.
For what it’s worth, I bought a sealed copy. Unsealed copies on eBay seem to go for $15-$30 so there’s still a bit of room for a decent deal.

milo bloom 03-09-26 03:47 PM

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I thought that sounded familiar, I've also got the $3 copy from Big Lots, and it's still sealed.

Our June Titles

Coming in June: a one-of-a-kind Pan-African musical spectacular; an essential 1990s NYC queer romance; an irresistible rock-and-soul comedy; an antifascist fairy tale; an urgent moral thriller from Iran; and, fresh from theaters, a radically antiheroic portrait of a sixteenth-century explorer. Plus: three colorful paeans to bodies in motion; a masterpiece of early-1970s American alienation; and a deliciously dark 1960s comedic thriller.

I’m sure demand will be high for K-pop Demon Hunters, but for me, I can wait until it’s on sale. Not going to pay MSRP. Or the small 20 to 30% discount on initial release.

Unless you have an independent shop you like to support, I couldn't imagine paying more than 50% msrp on any Criterion title. The longest you'd ever have to wait is like four months.

Pretty much and until it comes out and goes on sale, I can rewatch it anytime on Netflix.

The people who will likely buy it right away will most definitely be impulse buyers and not knowledgeable on how Criterion sales work.

Just getting Five Easy Pieces and Charade out of those June announcements. I do want to see Magellan but don't want to blind buy it. The Criterion Channel will probably be playing it.

That’s pretty much always true for me, but there are exceptions. I didn’t mind paying $10 more to have Godzilla vs. Biollante on day one, for instance.

I guess I should get Hairspray! since I knew someone who's a background dancer during Corny Collins Show segments. She was a ballgirl for the Baltimore Orioles and married a guy that worked for me in the Navy. I never asked her about the movie.

Back when the DVD of Charade was released, wasn't there an issue with it? I don't remember the detail as to if it was availability or disc issues.

Yet to see it, but I'll buy it. I'm always hesitant to watch early Waters films (I still haven't seen Pink Flamingos, because I know of the notorious scene...), but I find myself liking them. I really enjoyed Multiple Maniacs, and I nearly pissed myself laughing at Female Trouble.

I'm also interested in Hairspray.

I see they got Colleen Fitzpatrick to participate. Later on, she had a brief pop career as "Vitamin C", but she also fronted one of my favorite 90s bands, Eve's Plum.

It was a non anamorphic transfer, which they started with #47 Insomnia and were hit and miss with what they were releasing with anamorphic transfers during that period.

I just got around to watching my copy of the CC blu-ray of Charade a few months ago that I've had for a long time, I think that I am good with that and don't need to upgrade it.

Hairspray is a done deal. I'll probably grab Five Easy Pieces as well; I have the Blu-Ray from the BBS set (2010? 2011?) but I think it would be worth the upgrade.

Charade I'm iffy about. I absolutely adore the movie and it's a new restoration apparently but I've bought this movie so many times now I don't know if the juice is really worth the squeeze.

July Announcements have been made: Elephant Man (now in 4K), Hud, Crying Game, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Cruel Story of Youth, The Love that Remains, and a Mike Mills boxset with Beginners, 20th Century Women and C'mon C'mon.

Cruel Story of Youth will also include Oshima's first film A Town of Love and Hope, the Mills set will include a bunch of his short films. A pretty stacked month overall.

Is Hud the first time a Paul Newman movie has been in the Criterion Collection????? That’s pretty crazy.

I know there’s a teleplay he did in some box set.

Not as crazy as there not being a single Werner Herzog film in the whole collection.
The closest they came is Burden of Dreams, a documentary not directed by him, on his film Fitzcarraldo.

He has a minimum of 7 films that are worthy of inclusion in the collection. I'm sure it's a licensing thing and not an issue on quality of the films.

Criterion and Every Frame A Painting (the latter of which hasn’t been very active in nearly a decade, aside from a small burst of uploads last year) have co-uploaded the visual essay from the new edition of Tsui Hark’s THE BLADE, which does a pretty good job illustrating how this picture diverged from tradition and kinda earns its place despite generally underperforming during its initial release in Hong Kong.
