Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
And keep in mind the actual physical cost of Blu-rays and such is likely only a couple bucks a piece. It's like LEGO, it's not the cost of the physical materials - it's the R&D and the licensing that really run up the cost.
And even for celebrities that have money, sometimes it's about the experience that makes it unique for them. |

If I were them, Amazon would basically be my Criterion closet. I wouldn't think anything about spending a few hundred (or a few thousand) dollars on titles if I were them.
I think the excitement is just about being able to have a private shopping experience in which they get to browse through a collection of movies they may not even realize they want until they see it in hand. |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I also question how many of them actually take the discs home, or if they do take the discs home, actually watch them. I'm sure there are plenty that do, but it's obviously all about the marketing.

Mind you, I do agree somewhat with some of the sentiment here, and I often wonder if some of these folks even have Blu-ray players to watch them on. The Closet has really moved up the ‘celebrity hierarchy’ in the last year or so – featuring far more people who undoubtedly do have wealth – which is where I think some of the grumbling comes from. I suspect now that it’s more of an “in” thing than ever, half of Hollywood’s upper crust probably has it pencilled into their calendars and Criterion is only too happy to oblige for the social buzz it generates for them. Way of the world these days. |

Mikey Madison's is up.
I'll be respectful and not objectifying, but I'll just mention that there's a certain undergarment she chose not to wear for this video. |

I think she ended up donating a lot of them to charity.

It's disappointing that it appears only the newly created B&W version of Basquiat will be in 4k, not the original color.

I will be getting Some Like It Hot for sure and will rent Anora first to see if it is something I need to own.

Jean de Florette / Manon of the Spring is a fantastic addition. Love the cover too.

Neat stuff, nothing for me.
Godzilla vs Biollante is the first title in a while I've wanted from Criterion. |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
That Prince of Broadway cover was pretty confusing at first glance lol.
I know a lot was made of the WKW restorations when the box set first came out. Color changes, aspect ratio, soundtrack etc. Were all the films heavily revised? Does anyone know what changes were made to Chungking Express? I’m debating whether or not to pick it up. It’s a shame when filmmakers choose the Lucas route instead of the Coppola one. Whereas Lucas sticks both middle fingers up to the audience and says “be happy you get anything”, at least Coppola is like “hey, don’t like the new one, that’s okay you can have both.” |

It’s a shame when filmmakers choose the Lucas route instead of the Coppola one. Whereas Lucas sticks both middle fingers up to the audience and says “be happy you get anything”, at least Coppola is like “hey, don’t like the new one, that’s okay you can have both.” Best bet is to look up the more high-profile, tech-savvy reviews of Chungking Express, but ultimately there isn’t much choice regardless. He tinkered with all of them in reverse-engineering his little ‘universe’ or whatever, so if you don’t have the earlier Blu-rays of the four that were released over here prior to that (ITMFL, Chungking, Happy Together, Fallen Angels), or the HK Blu-rays of the first two, and can’t pony up for them now, then you’re kinda stuck with what’s in the box and/or these singles that now appear to be emanating from it. And at this point, there has been so much debate for and against that it’s probably easier just to cave and “be happy you get anything” (which is my takeaway from his fiddling around and then removing the originals from the being re-acquired). Searching ‘Chungking Express Criterion alterations’ brings up an almost unbearable number of discussions, with probably an equal amount of gushing and dismay. Ditto for most of the others. But that’s the era we live in, unfortunately. If he decided to reissue them all looking like Derek Jarman’s Blue, there would absolutely be a substantial contingent claiming they never looked better, it’s the way they were always meant to be, etc. I avoided the box for years and only sprang for it in the last Criterion sale, mainly for the extras and ‘collected’ presentation, after having signed out a few of the versions in it from the library here, including CE. I’m not into 4K so that’s where they end for me. On the four with pre-existing North American Blu-rays, if the mood hits me I’ll always go with those older discs. I guess at the end of the day, though, his storytelling and the performances by the top HK actors still shine through in all of the variants, especially Chungking Express, so there’s that. |

I've been wanting to see Anora, but I don't want to blow $25 on a blind buy. I'm beyond those days of spending money like that. Hopefully it comes on a subscription service I have so I can see it 1st. Wasn't able to see it in the theater.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm good on Chungking, my paper sleeve Blu-ray isn't going anywhere. I've been buying digital more these days, so Anora is in the Apple library now. That was worth the blind buy. I'm assuming Some Like It Hot is probably an obvious blind buy.

Already have Some Like It Hot on 4K -- paid $7.99 for it when Kino had their OOP sale a few weeks ago, along with a few other 4K titles that I'm sure CC is getting back again. They'll be the same transfers, too.
I will get Anora but in a 50% off sale. |

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I also recall the earlier CHUNGKING EXPRESS getting a replacement plastic case because those cardboard cases were kind of a bad idea. I remember mine came damaged, as did another of those early Blu-rays, and Criterion ended up sending plastic cases at some point. I’m assuming replacements were offered for other titles in that early run, too. So if you’re more keen on the older, unadulterated version of the movie, it might be worth comparison shopping to know which packaging you’re getting.

Yeah, I can wait for a sale to get Biollante since I was lucky enough to grab that Blu-ray that was out a while back.
If I didn’t have that, I might consider getting it outside of the 50% sale if I could find some kind of deal. I certainly wouldn’t pay MSRP. |
