I’d have preferred Silence, but KotFM is one I’ll definitely pick up.

I’d love to see various companies like Shout or VS give some of those titles a proper treatment. There’s quite a few gems in that catalog (along with some lesser stuff, of course). In fact, I’d think PEDICAB DRIVER is worthy of a Criterion slot if THE BLADE is!

Sometime after the Warner Archive folks talked up the idea of doing more HK titles, I believe something changed internally where they decided they were only going to release titles using in-house restorations. The criticism they received over their Drunken Master II disc may have been part of that decision, but that's mostly speculation on my part. WB have also since really opened the doors wide to independent labels licensing their titles. I imagine most of their HK catalog has been scooped up by someone or someones at this point. Either way, great to see the Blade finally see the light of day.

In related news, I saw someone at Arrow (James Flower I think) mentioned in an interview that next year they would be doing a HK box set that rivaled the Bruce Lee set they did a few years ago. It's hard to imagine what is left out there to release that's as high profile as Bruce Lee, but my mind immediately went to a 90's Jackie Chan set featuring his WB-held titles.

I mean, why? I am not going to buy this knowing that there will likely be an eventual 4K UHD release of this movie.

Are there any examples of films Criterion has released on Blu only (since they started doing 4k) that have subsequently been upgraded to UHD? I can't think of one. It's possible that the 4k master is SDR only and Criterion decided there wouldn't be any discernible difference between formats.

Wow, interesting. I hadn’t heard that. That would definitely be a treat, and long overdue as most of those have only been available in their American iterations. I’ve got HK editions of most of them, but old formats, bad subs, etc etc. At the same time, knowing the tendency of boutiques to release every Jackie Chan movie from his worst to his best in super-duper tchotchke-packed hard-box combo sets makes me wonder if those films will eventually get the same treatment to maximize profits. Unless gaining the U.S. cuts from WB required committing to a collection? Either way, it would be great to see them done right. And considering Arrow’s ongoing dip into the Warner / New Line catalog a set of those films does seem likely.

I forgot about DRUNKEN MASTER 2 being a WB disc, and I even have it! That’s definitely Criterion-worthy.

Happy about KotFM though.

You're all welcome.

I singlehandedly made the Testament release happen. I've been wanting to see it for a while. In September, I found a copy on laserdisc at a used record store, and figured since I couldn't get it on any other format I'd get the 12".

And of course, a new remastered version was just on the horizon.

Obviously a tangent here, but why the distaste for that film in particular?

Lots of torture. Not my bag, baby. I really couldn't understand why anyone liked it, honestly. Pretty and well acted but exceptionally unpleasant.

I've been trying to pickup some of the New Line releases on DVD here and there, I would love a Criterion Blu box of that stuff, especially if they include the dubs and US cuts.

As for the new announcements, The Blade looks interesting and maybe Testament.

Our April Titles

Coming in April: three indelible tales of Black urban life from a vital auteur; a stylized revenge thriller set in 1960s Los Angeles; a blockbuster biblical epic from a legendary British comedy troupe; a pre-Code jewel glittering with innuendo and sophistication; the most sensual of all Hollywood noirs; six woman-centered features directed by one of Japan’s greatest actors; and, fresh from theaters, a ravishing vision of a world where humans have forsaken dreams for immortality.

That John Singleton set sounds great. However I would have preferred Higher Learning over Baby Boy. But, I guess it is a hood collection.

And Point Blank is a fun old school 60s action movie.

Same price as for every 1-2 disc Criterion release, $49.95 list price.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Yeah, Criterion basically doesn't exist for me outside of the 50% sale (or used).

There are very few titles that would compel me to pay full price for a Criterion release these days.

Our May Titles

Coming in May: one of the steamiest erotic thrillers ever made; a strikingly raw debut feature about race, class, and sexuality; a disturbingly prescient ecofeminist parable; a moving tale of one family’s generations of trauma and healing; a freewheeling showbiz drama about a taboo-shattering comedian; a crime thriller set in a squalid postwar Japan; and, fresh from theaters, a loving snapshot of a vanished 1970s New York.

They have announced the May releases, and Body Heat is coming. After the recent releases of Altered States, History of Violence, and Kiss of the Spider-Woman I hope that they keep their journey through William Hurt's filmography by releasing Children of a Lesser God.

Definitely in for Body Heat at the next sale. That was the epitome of Kathleen Turner at her hottest. And it was a good thriller too :D

I have held off on upgrading the Kurosawa films cause I keep thinking that they will end up doing a boxset like they have done for Bergman and Fellini. I mean they did a super expensive limited one on dvd with films that were exclusive to that set, there's no reason why they couldn't do it again on blu-ray.

milo bloom 02-13-26 01:27 PM

Fresh Kill looks interesting, not sure how much more dystopia I can take right now though.

I know Stray Dog is a Kurosawa, but not really up my alley.

It's very different from the samurai films he's more famous for. A noirish trip through the underworld (including a near dialogue-free sequence that runs a good 10 minutes or more) isn't for everyone.

That said it's a great film, will be purchasing at the next Criterion sale it shows up on.

I loved it, but it probably isn’t for everyone.

For this group of releases, definitely Body Heat and Sentimental Value for me.

It’s possible but there’s a ton they need to get right first. They need to upgrade the Eclipse titles, which are below DVD standard. And it’s been 15 years and they still haven’t given a separate release to Madadayo which is only in the box set. It would be pretty sad if that still ends up only in a set.

The scene in Body Heat where Kathleen Turner is looking all sexy in her white dress while William Hurt smashes the back screen door to grab her is going to look and sound great in 4K.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I was excited to see this news in Variety:

The strategy follows the Film Heritage Foundation’s restoration of “Sholay” after discovering 500 cans of original material and 500 cans of “Shaan” material in Technicolor’s storage facility in London. The restored “Sholay” is in discussions for limited theatrical releases through Criterion in North America and BFI in the U.K., with a Criterion Blu-ray edition and streaming release also planned.
Sholay will always have a special place in my heart as the first movie I watched with the person who’s now my wife.

Some of the titles from the Eclipse sets have gotten blu-ray releases overseas, so Criterion is behind on some upgrades anyway. I kept expecting Madadayo to get a separate release since it was just in the boxset and the Fox Lorber dvd is long out of print, but I guess it got lost when they moved away from releasing dvds and not blu-rays.

Semi related: It'd be nice if they (or anyone) relicensed The Quiet Duel, since the BCI dvd is also out of print and pretty expensive.
