Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Hmmm. So the good news is that Criterion has definitely gone with the unaltered international version of Eyes Wide Shut for its release. But DVD Beaver has captured screenshots that reveal--AGAIN--a teal-leaning presentation that sucks some warmth out of the image. See the full review here: Eyes Wide Shut 4K UHD - Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Sydney Pollack, Leelee Sobieski

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Transfers done under Criterion's watch always seem to have tweaks in the color temperature from earlier releases.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
There is a 35mm fan scan that's been floating around online for a year or two. The new Criterion caps are a much better match. The print has a lot of teal. Based on the dvd beaver caps, this is 100% an upgrade.

A scan of a theatrical print will not have accurate color timing. The print itself was timed to be projected through a xenon lamp with specific color temperature. The scanner will not match that, and will add a green bias that shifts blues to teal. That needs to be compensated for in the digital color grading.

Flash sale is tomorrow.
They sent me a $10 code and I have never even subscribed to the channel. |

Cool! Report back!

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Transfer looks gorgeous. Tbh, I'm not a pixel peeper on the level of that other sight.
Finished the movie. I might like it better than Wages of Fear. More gritier and love the bridge scene. I think I have the WoF blu-ray (I don't see it listed in any of my tracking databases but I could swear I bought it) in one of my many boxes (I don't feel like going through 15 boxes) but it's available on Kanopy so I might revisit it one day. |

The Wes Anderson set arrived last night. Overall, it looks good, but mine has a tiny smudge on the front cover that won't come out. Others have reported some QC issues like smudges on the booklets and blade markings on the spines, so I guess I'm luckier than them.
I'm archiving my discs now... Hopefully no issues! :) |

How fast does it take for Amazon to start price matching?

So I ran to one on my lunch break and got Nightmare Alley! Now just gotta wait until the 25th for Eyes Wide Shut. |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Ordered FLOW 4K & NIGHTMARE ALLEY 4K from B&N. Amazon has matched both.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
The Breakfast Club 4K is currently $24.98 on Amazon... snagged it at that price.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Our February TitlesComing in February: a prescient X-ray of the corrupted soul of a corporate-dominated America; an existential noir thriller set in 1940s California; four elegant, bawdy pre-Code movie musicals; and, fresh from theaters, a darkly comic, gonzo revenge thriller. Plus: now on 4K UHD, a psychologically complex western and a nearly wordless comedy about confusion in an age of high technology; and, on stand-alone Blu-ray, a benchmark of American independent cinema.https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1763132599 https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1763132599 https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1763132599 https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1763133703 https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1763132599 https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1763132599 https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1763132599 |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I got my Facebook settlement money, all $35.50 on a prepaid Mastercard which turned out to be harder to use than I thought but I found someone on eBay selling a sealed copy of the 4K Biollante disc at a price barely more than I would paid at B&N and got that ordered.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Too bad The Man Who Wasn’t There doesn’t include the color version as a bonus, even if only in SD. I vaguely recall that was only available on DVD overseas in Korea or elsewhere.
|
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'll get Network, for sure. Possibly The Man Who Wasn't There.

I'm a fan of John Hughes but Breakfast Club never connected to me. Maybe because I never attended detention. But FOMO is hitting but I'll resist.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
But I do like movies about high school cliques: Heathers, Pretty in Pink and Mean Girls.

I got in my preorder for the Pee-Wee's Big Adventure 4k on Amazon. At $34.99 it's the best price I've seen right now but they haven't given me a ship date yet as I'm guessing they probably have a ton of orders to fill for it before mine.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Testament appears to be Blu-ray only, which seems dumb, considering they included the following in their description:
I mean, why? I am not going to buy this knowing that there will likely be an eventual 4K UHD release of this movie. |

Wasnt the biggest fan of Killers of the Flower Moon but glad to hear it's getting a release.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Tsui Hark’s THE BLADE was a nice surprise. Kick-ass movie. That was one of the titles in Warner Archive’s original line of Golden Harvest on-demand DVDs, which ultimately went exactly nowhere after much talk from them, so maybe this is a sign WB is finally loosening their grip on that catalog after disappointing HK fans ever since that first run. I’d love to see various companies like Shout or VS give some of those titles a proper treatment. There’s quite a few gems in that catalog (along with some lesser stuff, of course). In fact, I’d think PEDICAB DRIVER is worthy of a Criterion slot if THE BLADE is!
