I read the complete opposite on Criterion forum and that it starts on July 10.

Edit: here's a link on reddit showing an employee's work schedule.

https://www.reddit.com/r/criterion/c...cording_to_my/

Hopefully this is accurate and not old/incorrect data.

Man, I hope that the sale happens. Got a gift card itching to be used and the Bruce Lee set is coming out in 7/14!

A little pissed though that Criterion didn't add English subs to the special edition of Enter the Dragon (according to DVDbeaver). That's my go to version.

Still picking it up though and buying it half off at 62 bucks would alleviate the sting.

The only thing I really want from Criterion is the new Bruce Lee set. I'll get that one when B&N has their next 50% off sale. My yearly membership at BN also auto-renewed, so I would also get an extra 10% off as well.

I'm not a big Criterion person to be perfectly honest.

I have to admit I fell for the allure of being a fancy film collector and bought a lot of titles that I thought I should watch, in order to be taken seriously as a film scholar. But I'm not a film scholar, I just like collecting and exploring some new concepts in film. But Criterions, even during the sales, are too expensive for "experimentation".

So now I just stick to things like War of the Worlds and the Bruce Lee set.

Would love to see a great Criterion edition of Da 5 Bloods. So so good and so timely!

I’m sure most of us have been guilty of this at some point. For me there’s a very small percentage of Criterion releases that actually interest me. Not that they don’t put out quality releases, but a lot of the more arthouse or foreign releases I just don’t care about if I’m honest.

I’m getting War of the Worlds, which actually is a blind buy but I feel like it’s something I’ll enjoy. Aside from that the only other release on the horizon from them I’m getting is The Elephant Man. Have some interest in the Bruce Lee set, but mainly for Enter the Dragon. Wish that would just release from them separately.

Depends on your definition of "of significance". The deluxe WB release only has the "special edition" cut. The Criterion includes:
"New 2K digital restoration of the rarely-seen 99-minute 1973 theatrical version of Enter the Dragon, with uncompressed original monaural soundtrack"

It also claims the "special edition" cut comes from a "New 2K digital restoration" though it's unclear to me if that's really newer than the WB release. As far as extras, the only Enter the Dragon-specific thing I can see listed that isn't on the WB release is "New interviews on all five films with Lee biographer Matthew Polly" (one of which is obviously about Enter the Dragon).

I don’t know why, I keep trying, but I dislike this movie. I like Whitaker, a lot (The Butler, King of Scotland, even his SW stuff. Wasn’t he in a famous war movie? Was it Platoon?, freaking Vision Quest, Bird oc, Good Morning Vietnam, remember him in Fast Times at Ridgemont High? short, but fun), liked him and his quirkiness., but just don’t jive with the movie so much. I have tried multiple times. I’ve always watched completely, but doesn’t do it for me. Maybe this version will enlighten me.

Went into Barnes and Noble today and pre-ordered the Bruce Lee set for in store pick up. Paid 17 bucks after the discount and a 50 dollar gift card I had from Xmas. Wanted to get "Being John Malkovich" but it was already sold out at my local store.

Same! I didn't buy much during the last sale, so I went in pretty hard during my visit to 4 stores in my area.

I ended up picking up:

Bamboozled
The Battle of Algiers
Detour
Fanny & Alexander
Picnic At Hanging Rock
Portrait of a Lady On Fire
Scenes From A Marriage
Wildlife
Wild Strawberries

I accidentally bought a 2nd copy of All That Heaven Allows because I forgot that I owned it. So that'll be going back tomorrow.

Once I pick up the Bruce Lee set, Cries & Whispers and Marriage Story, I'll be done on this sale. I hope!

As I live in Canada I'm gonna have to sit this sale out. Which may be a blessing in disguise, because the winter sale is when they run their gift card deal where if you buy a 60 dollar gift card (I think its 60) you get 10 dollars free. I didn't buy a Criterion disc in either of their last 2 sales. I haven't bought a Criterion disc at all since the 2018 B&N winter sale, so my list is hovering around 40 titles. So hopefully when I pull the trigger on a shit load of titles, I'll have enough gift cards to get a decent sized stack of titles next summer for free.

The Guillermo Del Toro Trilogia blu-ray has been unavailable for quite a while now. It's not available on Amazon or B&N (both have it temporarily out of stock, and the Criterion website lists it as "currently unavailable.") B&N even has it at 50% off as part of their sale, but not in stock.

No indication on when, or if, it will be available again. I'm hoping its between pressings, and the deluxe nature of the packaging and book means it might take a while.

I never picked this up because it's a $100 boxed set, and getting it online from Amazon or B&N means it would arrive damaged because their packaging is shit, and the two copies that B&N had in-stock at the time both had crushed corners. This set is too nice to not own in pristine condition. :(

I've avoided it because I already own The Devil's Backbone and Chronos (signed by Guillermo!), so can't justify the price, just for Pan's Labyrinth.

It is a beautiful set, though, which makes it tempting.

Thanks asianxcore for posting that article. Very good stuff. I’ve always seen Bamboozled as the one movie that should have gotten a lot more acclaim. I think it’s Spike at his best. Only BlacKKKlansman and Da 5 Bloods are up there with it.

Well, and Do the Right Thing at the top of all that.

Gotta say, the packaging on the Bruce Lee set is very disappointing. A fold-out digipack. Better than Alien Quadrilogy but still not what I expect from Criterion. And such a tiny, flimsy booklet? For $125 (list), I expected a more elaborate presentation.

That's disappointing. What's the deal with Bruce Lee sets having bad packaging? The Shout! Legacy Collection was garbage too, at least the way the discs were housed. I made custom Blu-ray covers for those so I could keep the discs in regular cases. I might have to do the same when I get the Criterion set.

I thought the Bruce packaging looked nice, and the magazine style book was cool, but the main box itself seems flimsy. I know it will stay on the shelf most of the time, but I hate the thought of it getting dinged up.

I wish that Criterion would once in a while use the original theatrical poster art, even though I realize they have to do something to separate most of their releases from earlier studio editions. Not fond of that morse code title overlay for Parasite. I get how it relates to the film, but the original poster was ideal. Still, the supplements look pretty solid.

  • New 4K digital master, approved by director Bong Joon Ho and director of photography Hong Kyung Pyo, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • New audio commentary featuring Bong and critic Tony Rayns
  • Black-and-white version of the film with a new introduction by Bong, and Dolby Atmos soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • New conversation between Bong and critic Darcy Paquet
  • New interviews with Hong, production designer Lee Ha Jun, and editor Yang Jinmo
  • New program about the New Korean Cinema movement featuring Bong and filmmaker Park Chan Wook (Oldboy)
  • Cannes Film Festival press conference from 2019 featuring Bong and members of the cast
  • Master class featuring Bong from the 2019 Lumière Festival in Lyon, France
  • Storyboard comparison
  • Trailers
  • PLUS: An essay by critic Inkoo Kang

He's with an American film critic. So he's probably the moderator and they will probably have a translator with them.

Or the critic talks on his own and then Bong speaks about it edited in with subtitles.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Bong shifts between English and Korean in many of his interviews. His English is good, but obviously he expresses ideas better in Korean. Ideally, this track would just be fully subtitled in English (even when he's speaking it, for those who have a hard time with accents), but leave out the translator as the time required to repeat what was said would be better spent discussing the film. That said, I do hope his go-to translator, Sharon Choi, appears somewhere on the disc, as she developed quite a devoted following of her own last year thanks to her speed, dexterity and all-around charm.

It's unclear to me if Pierrot le fou has been updated or is just a reissue of the prior Criterion disc from 2009. Criterion claims a "new 2K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray," but of course Criterion is frequently very loose with their use of the word "new." If it were really remastered, wouldn't they have it done in 4K? The supplements appear to be identical to the old disc.

They would not have changed the artwork if this wasn't considered an "upgrade". For example, Army of Shadows, the other studio Canal title to return, was more or less a straight rerelease with the same art.

As for 4k vs 2k, I thought at one point all in house Criterion scans were done in 2k. If it was 4k, then that meant they sourced it from elsewhere. I don't know if this is one of their in house jobs, but that might explain it.

I'm psyched about the release of Parasite having the Black & White version. I initially was kicking myself for missing out on the Zaavi Steelbook for that reason. Not anymore!

The original disc, which I have, says it was an HD digital transfer from the 35mm negative. Could be there was a 2K version in the mix at the time, but it does sound like it's "new."

If I hadn't picked up the Parasite UHD cheap in a Target sale recently, this would be the first month in maybe ever that I could say "Wow! Every single title will be a pick up next sale".

Very much looking forward to Claudine and The Hit.
