I think everyone is scratching their heads about House Party. Not a bad movie and all, but certainly not one I anticipated Criterion releasing.

To my understanding I think House Party has only been released on dvd and digital so I'm sure fans are thrilled for this anniversary 4k/bluray release.

I think House Party can easily be considered a cult comedy, especially among the hip hop crowd, so I don't find it too head-scratching. It's also quintessentially 90s and there's very much a 90s revival going on in fashion/culture lately.

I'm excited to see Criterion putting out Eyes Wide Shut. I know it's one of Kubrick's more polarizing films, but I have always really enjoyed it. The dream-like nature of Bill's odyssey always pulls me in. I'll be picking up the UHD for sure. However, I don't really care for that cover art.

Hoping the Eyes Wide Shut disc covers the censorship controversy surrounding the initial release... I was disappointed that the Channel featured the censored version of the film a few months back.

I don't think it's that polarizing anymore. I think it's been fully reclaimed as the masterpiece that it is. I know for me it's an automatic purchase. That cover is definitely awful though. I don't care if it is based on a poster by his wife and daughter.

I agree that it has gained more appreciation over the years after being maligned on its initial release. There was so much pre-release hype and rumormongering about what the movie would be, I think people had expectations that were way too specific and they couldn't get past those expectations to experience what Kubrick actually made. Time has given people a chance to appreciate the movie on its own terms and the general consensus has improved significantly. However, it's still the lowest-scored big budget feature in Kubrick's canon among both critics and audiences, so I would still consider it to be one of his most polarizing movies, even though in the grand scheme of all cinema, it's not terribly polarizing at this point.

I agree that it's not that polarizing anymore, but I really don't think many consider it a masterpiece.

I’ll get Eyes Wide Shut and House Party at the next 50% off sale. I haven’t seen House Party since VHS, but I recall it was a really funny movie. But, urban comedies like that are not for everyone. Hope Kid N Play participates in the bonus content. I’d like to hear their reflections on it. It’s funny because I actually saw Class Act first, which I loved and then went back and saw House Party. Great double feature, both movies include a house party, just very different house parties.

The extras include this:

  • New cast reunion featuring actors B-Fine, Bowlegged Lou, and the Legend Paul Anthony of Full Force; Tisha Campbell; AJ Johnson; Christopher “Play” Martin; Daryl “Chill” Mitchell; and Christopher “Kid” Reid

I remember when Criterion announced C.H.U.D. as an April Fools joke. Announcing House Party doesn't feel too dissimilar to that.

The Criterion site indicates that it’s the “International version”. I believe that’s the uncensored version, right?

That's my assumption, yes. Only the American version (of course) was digitally altered to protect vulnerable audiences.

Well, fortunately, you don't have to wait for the sale. This drops on Nov. 11, which will be in the middle of the B&N November Criterion sale.

Finally. EWS in 4K. The existing Blu-ray is pretty bad. Criterion almost always does a good job with their 4Ks so I’m expecting a great presentation.

(UPDATED) I thought my faith in physical media collectors was restored a little bit today when I first posted this a few minutes ago, but alas it was not to be. Canadian Criterion collectors are just as willing as their American counterparts to line up for hours for this experience. Sigh.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...076281c8a.jpeg

I posted moments ago that the line (as seen in the photo), was extremely short, so I assumed the van maybe didn’t draw the crowds we normally see online, and that the lines were maybe longer earlier when it first opened. Out of curiosity I spoke to one of the Criterion people about it and he explained that what I was seeing was the end of the line and that one guy who came out with his ‘prizes’ had been in line for about six to seven hours. The first people in line apparently got there around 9:30 am, and the van opened at 11 am, so that’s about the shortest wait time.

All for products you can buy online – even in Canada – for the same price as they are in the van. We all have our ‘moments’ I suppose. -rolleyes-:)

What an efficient use of time.

A few weeks back I came across a YouTube video of a couple taking advantage of the B&N Criterion sale. They spent a long time in the store (a couple hours I think) going through all the titles, sitting on the floor and trying to decide which ones to purchase.

I don't get it. You can get all the information about every single Criterion title on their site - main cast, description and usually trailers. You also have IMDB and other sites for more information. You can even search for disc reviews (video/audio/supplements quality). Much more information than you're going to get looking at the front and back covers. Decide what you want when you're at home, and then go to the store, grab them off the shelves, pay and leave.

At least that B&N couple had a couple of hours to sit and fart around with the actual discs. At the Criterion Van you get three minutes. Either way, neither options seems ideal. Few Barnes & Noble stores have much of the overall Collection in stock, while the Van has everything but you get t little time. Go on the website, and you’re done.

But, as Story so rightly put it, it’s all about content these days.

I should note that the guy who came out of the truck when I was there was the second last guy (the last one was a festival volunteer). When you come out of the truck, the Criterion staff give you some polite applause as part of the ‘show’. When this dude emerged he screamed at the top of his lungs “YEEEEEEAAAAHHHH - BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVAAARRRR!!!” while hosting his loot over his head. He was stoked, no doubt about it, but I’m thinking “Seven hours in line for that birthday present?” To each his own, I guess.

In fairness I can’t deny the power that the CC brand and the Van have over people, some considerably more than others. I’ve said it before here: as ridiculous and time-wasting as I find the whole concept, it’s a brilliant marketing tool, and Criterion is no different than any company nowadays in embracing the social media + endless content era. They know full well that some people are born to stand in lines for whatever shiny bauble is at the other end, while other people cringe at the thought – that’s me! I rarely stand in line-ups for the screenings at TIFF, so the lines at the various collaborator pop-ups along ‘Festival Street’ – and there’s quite a few of them, mostly food related freebies – don’t get a second thought.

I for one miss the cultural experience of going to the video store with a friend and looking around for an hour at different covers, reading the back cover, debating which films to get, having drawn out discussions. That part of it was half the fun. I really miss it. Those Barnes and Noble people you saw are 100% doing it the right way. I don’t think I’d do the criterion closet mobile van. But they record and post the videos, so I understand how it would be satisfying to have a few minutes to share your personal experience with cinema on Criterion’s platform. None of it seems off putting to me.

You never went to the rental store with my dad. He would pick up every movie and read the back and after four hours not rent anything.

During the sale, I usually will pick out a couple of times that I make the nearly hour drive to the nearest B&N store. There are actually two nearby each other. I will check inventory if there's a high-demand title that I want, but otherwise, I just go to browse what the two stores have and decide which titles to buy from there. Maybe it's the fun of the hunt or flashbacks to rental store days, but I still appreciate the browse.

Yeah, I don't do it as much anymore, but I used to always buy 3 or 4 per visit during sales. I would usually go with a plan to buy one new release, one upgrade (once Blu-ray was introduced), and then one or two blind-buys/surprises. Whatever happened to catch my eye while I was browsing. It was absolutely part of the fun and a completely different experience than researching online. I made a lot of fun discoveries that way. I wouldn't video myself and put it on YouTube, because why would I, but hanging out in the store for an hour was great.

But seriously, I don’t have any issue with the way you or the people in the video decide to spend their time. Do what you enjoy, I say!
