One of the most thrilling movie epics of all time, SEVEN SAMURAI tells the story of a sixteenth-century village whose desperate inhabitants hire the eponymous warriors to protect them from invading bandits. This three-hour ride from Akira Kurosawa—featuring legendary actors Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura—seamlessly weaves philosophy and entertainment, delicate human emotions and relentless action, into a rich, evocative, and unforgettable tale of courage and hope. In theaters 7/5/24! 70th anniversary 4K restoration by Toho Co. Ltd. |

If the Seven Samurai 4k UHD isn't colorized with an ATMOS soundtrack and zoomed in to fill my TV screen or I will have to pass.

Also dubbed with current famous actors, again using AI to make the characters' lips sync accordingly. |

Don't forget using AI to make those colors POP and get rid of that pesky film-grain!

And there better be skin and plenty of it!
I still have the re-issue DVD set, I should give it another spin sometime. |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Do they ever list posters for sale on their website? I know they used to and I would be tempted to order that Seven Samurai if offered.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
From Criterion in September:

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I still have Happiness on DVD. Should be a worthwhile upgrade.
|
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Repo Man and that Araki set, FTW!
|
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
All of Us Strangers... another Disney owned title. Let's get more Searchlight titles in the collection.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Araki Trilogy & Happiness
|
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
With the exception of Happiness, that's some ugly-ass artwork.
|
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I don't know if I ever need to see Happiness again. Damn that's some dark shit. Props to Dylan Baker and Phillip Seymour Hoffman for even being willing to play such slimy people.
|
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Yeah, saw Happiness in the theater back when it first came out... there are few movies that I think are good, that I never want to see again, and that's one of them!
(Piano Teacher is another) |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I saw Happiness in the theater as well and literally all I remember about it is the very last scene. I couldn't even begin to tell you what it's even about. Maybe I blocked it from my memory? Now I'm kind of curious.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Whoa, that’s nice that Gummo and Happiness are both getting 4K releases. Neither have been available on streaming or digital and the only prior releases are ancient DVDs.
|
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I just got an ancient release of Gummo today. That’s so funny. Going along with Kids, Ken Park, Bully and now this. I’m psyched I don’t have to watch my dvd version of Gummo.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I just saw that Mother is coming to Criterion, though not in 4K. I love Albert Brooks and man, Mother is one of his best.

Sorry, I'm not sure why I wrote that because I know it's in UHD. What I was thinking about was that as a preorder it doesn't look like there is any or much of a discount for the sale, unless I'm missing something.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Janus Films posted the trailer earlier today for the restoration of TIME MASTERS (1988), directed by Rene Laloux (FANTASTIC PLANET) and co-written by Laloux and Jean ‘Moebius’ Giraud, from the novel by FP author Stefan Wul. It plays theatrically this summer but hopefully that means a disc release down the road:

I like a lot of dark, strange, and boundary pushing films (I never miss a Von Trier film..) but I have the most normie take on Gummo ever. The only time I watched it I started reacting like I was my Aunt Susan 5 minutes in. |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I feel like a "Gummo gatekeeper" would be holding the gate open, begging for someone, anyone to come watch the movie with them.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I looked up the description and it said they spend their days hunting stray cats so I have zero interest whatsoever.
I'm beginning to move into my old man phase of thinking that maybe movies don't have to show every shitty behavior someone does, even if it's portrayed negatively. Maybe just show something else. |

I keep hoping Criterion will announce a 4K release of Pan's Labyrinth. I know there is a standard 4K UHD studio release out there, but I would prefer their touch on this movie with the prior extras they had plus new ones if possible. There has got to be one in the pipeline for them, right? |

Viggo Mortensen, western fan :):
Koji Yakusho had some good picks too, including one of his own. |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Man, Criterion did a bang up job with Risky Business. It never looked or sounded better. When Phil Collins came on the bass really kicks in. It’s a glorious visual and audio spectacle. And, the movie is of course of legend. Cruise must have fixed his teeth after The Outsiders and before this. Great movie all around. Amazing soundtrack by Tangerine Dream. I’ve yet to get to extras, but it’s been a great trip thus far. Was the Blu-ray version.
