 I posted the news there for the hell of it. If you don’t bring attention to worthwhile information here like Wong having a TV series coming to the States, how else will anyone know? But, I know Criterion Channel probably doesn’t have that many subscribers here. But hell, those that do now know about it. I’m a subscriber, at least until late November when my subscription runs out. Hopefully it drops by the Fall.

Good idea! I looked at the Criterion Channel thread in the streaming forum and saw about three posts in the last six months, so I figured it wouldn’t get noticed there. I don’t watch a lot of streaming (other than B-movie junk on Tubi) or television in general, so I didn’t even think about posting it in TV Talk!

Incidentally, it took Wong and company three years to make the series (not surprising knowing his cinematic history). This trailer debuted in 2021, nearly 2.5 years before the series actually aired in December 2023:

And this trailer is from 2022:

Needless to say, it was one of our top movies of the year and we watched the Oscar race between this and The Wild Robot (all 5 nominees were great, actually) with lots of interest.

My honest question: I would usually wait for the Barnes & Noble 50% off sale. And, I so very appreciate the work of this little Latvian animation studio that could. If I were to contemplate paying full price, who does that benefit? Criterion? Barnes & Noble? Gints Zilbalodis and Dream Well Studios? I know it's just an extra $20-$25, but for the first time in a long time, I'm wondering this sort of question. Anybody have any insight into this?

Paying full price at Barnes & Noble very likely only benefits them. They pay Criterion a certain amount for the product and then they determine what to price it on the shelf.

Unless Criterion sells on consignment, which means they would have to be okay with B&N doing the regular half price sales.

I wouldn’t worry overly much about something like that. I do agree with supporting brick and mortar stores like them, but I also have a budget to keep in mind.

My copy of the Adventures of Antoine Doinel set is out for delivery today. I ordered directly from Criterion when it went up for pre-order because I had coupons to use up.
I don’t recall Criterion shipping anything to me earlier than the release date, but I guess it happens from time to time.

October:

Our October Titles

Coming in October: a provocative deconstruction of the American action hero; a deliriously perverse portrait of obsessive love; a mind-expanding cinematic head trip; and a noirish vision of the world as a carnival of corruption. Plus: an influential horror masterpiece and a resurrection of a tortured, enigmatic heroine—now on 4K UHD. And from Criterion Premieres: a heady thriller about grief, mortality, and love.

Apparently October is William Hurt month for Criterion. It's a missed opportunity for them to also dump Broadcast News or the Big Chill out on 4K to go along with History of Violence and Altered States.

That's just a coincidence. It's actually Peter MacNeill month. They were going to release the complete Captain Power series packaged with toy spaceship/light gun, but ran into trouble getting the light gun to work with modern LCD tvs.

You could ask the same thing about Eyes Without a Face. Or literally any other title they've ever upgraded.

Acknowledging Canada with three releases while clearly denying our most vaunted contribution to all of the arts. Scandal! This must not stand! MacNeill will not be pleased that he wasn’t afforded a triple in this batch.

Nope. They did it with del Toro’s last release Shape of Water, though it was $10 less than this upcoming one. Wish we were given a choice.

Criterion is reviving the Eclipse line, starting in November!

https://ci3.googleusercontent.com/me...jpg?1753477965

This November, Criterion is thrilled to relaunch Eclipse, our continuing series of lost, forgotten, or overshadowed films presented in simple, affordable box set editions. We are upgrading the line to Blu-ray and releasing both new editions and upgrades of popular DVD sets. Starting with a deep dive into the work of Abbas Kiarostami that highlights the first two decades of the legendary Iranian filmmaker’s career, the series will also bring you films from Kinuyo Tanaka, Sara Gómez, Ruben Östlund, and more.

rocket1312 08-06-25 12:46 PM

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

That's exciting, if long, long overdue. I don't have a lot of Eclipse sets, but there's a certainly a few I would be willing/eager to upgrade.

Adam Tyner 08-06-25 01:04 PM

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Actually, here's better copy about what's to come:

In the coming months, you can look forward to Eclipse sets of the six extraordinary features directed by Kinuyo Tanaka, Japan’s first successful woman director; and five searingly radical documentaries from the husband-and-wife team of Kazuo Hara and Sachiko Kobayashi. And we’ll get you singing and dancing with Blu-ray upgrades of Carlos Saura’s electrifying Flamenco Trilogy and Ernst Lubitsch’s joyously risqué pre-Code musicals. Also in the pipeline are sets devoted to the early films of Ruben Östlund and the revolutionary cinema of Sara Gómez.
I'm always up for more Lubtisch!

Aren't there already like 17 other labels that flood the market with every horror/sci-fi title known to man?

The two Kurosawa Eclipse sets to blu-ray seems like a no brainer. I know the Nikkatsu Noir was always a good seller too so I wouldn't be surprised if it got an upgrade. But I'm hoping that the Robert Downey Sr. and Basil Dearden sets get blu-rays.

I finally bought the Postwar Kurosawa DVD set during the last 50% off sale, so I’m sure that one will come out on Blu-ray sooner than later.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

It'd be nice if Criterion got the rights to The Quiet Duel and added it to the Postwar Kurosawa set. The BFI disc is long out of print and sells for a high amount on the secondary market.

But I kind of doubt that they will since they have been sitting on some of the titles that they've only released in the AK 100 box and still haven't rereleased in a cheaper format than a $400 boxset.

I'm not opposed to Criterion doing sci-fi/horror, but many of the labels who specialize in that sort of genre stuff frankly do it better than Criterion. I'd rather Criterion focus on the titles that no one else is willing to handle.

I wish that Disney would license out more of the Touchstone/Buena Vista/Hollywood Pictures library to someone since they have no real interest in releasing those films themselves, and a lot of those films haven't gotten a US release since their original non anamorphic dvds in the late 90s.

Welp, as I figured previously in this thread, it was only a matter of time. :)

After wildly successful stops in multiple cities across the United States, the Criterion Mobile Closet is making its first trip outside the country!

September 4–7: Toronto, Canada, at the Toronto International Film Festival

Stocked with more than 1,700 of the greatest films from around the world, the Criterion Collection Closet may offer more cinematic inspiration per square foot than any other place on the planet. Filmmakers, stars, and creative luminaries of all kinds come to Criterion to champion their favorite films in our popular Criterion Closet Picks video series. Last year, we opened the door to everyone by taking the Closet out on the road, and Toronto will be our sixth stop. Come in, explore the collection, and make your own Closet video!

Interested in receiving updates? Sign up here to get important information about location, the opening and closing of our line, logistics, etc.

Please note: signing up here does not guarantee entry to our Mobile Closet experience, which operates on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Location

Across the street from TIFF Lightbox
350 King Street W
Toronto, ON M5V 3X5

Opening Hours

September 4: 3–7 p.m.
September 5–7: 11 a.m.–7 p.m.

I also got an email blast today from Canadian physical media distributor/retailer Unobstructed View, who are apparently partnered in this. For the first weekend of TIFF, the whole ‘theater district’ stretch of King Street downtown is blocked off to traffic so various festival sponsors can set up exhibits, tasting stations, food trucks, music stages, etc. Parking the van there admittedly makes sense, but putting it right outside the main venue could also be a pain in the ass considering the lines it draws.

One thing absent from this announcement is the discount they’ll be offering. Unobstructed View participates in the various Criterion sales. Their discount online is 40% instead of the 50% that Americans get, but after it’s taken off the Canadian MSRP, the prices are remarkably close after comparing rates. However, UV’s shipping tends to be overpriced and they charge the sales tax, which keeps me ordering from the U.S. sales. So anything less than 40% off in the van would be kind of a rip.

If nothing else, I guess it will be interesting to see the thing in person, inevitably rolling my eyes at the lineups for merch you can buy online for the same price, or maybe less. Mind you, if the very presence of the van makes otherwise unaware fest-goers and random Canucks on the street realize that physical media is still a very cool thing, then I will keep my curmudgeonly antics to a minimum. :)

Meanwhile, back in the real Criterion Closet . . .
