Fellowship of the Ring with the green tint. Bram Stoker's Dracula. French Connection. The different color timings for Halloween. The weird lightsaber stuff it the Star Wars OT. Terminator being tealed and oranged.

They're either mucking stuff up themselves, or just glance at a new transfer and say "Eh. Good enough."

I think they approach it at different points in their life and have different ideas about it. The level of control digital transfers allows now is pretty amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if they're still pretty invested in their films.

That'll complete that Whit Stillman Criterion catalog. Very happy to see Barcelona finally make it to blu. Looks like they're even releasing his 3 films in a set.

He's actually written and directed 5 films now.

It's not as good as his first 3 films, but Damsel In Distress has some nice moments and a good performance by Greta Gerwig. Not sure it needs a Criterion though.

Also it looks like he has another film completed, Love & Friendship, that should be out this year.

Sorry, to clarify, I meant These are the only Stillman films to have been given the Criterion treatment.

You might not be impressed with Sinatra's martial arts though.

Even though Phoenix is a good film, I'm still surprised it's getting the Criterion treatment.

Because currently, the only way to get it on blu-ray is in the Lean & Coward boxset with several other titles. It's the same reason they made a separate release of Five Easy Pieces (which was previously only in the BBS set).

Criterion has released several excellent IFC titles over the years. Phoenix is among one of the greatest films that IFC has ever distributed. It's bound to become a new classic in German cinema.

That explains it, did not know it was an IFC film, looking forward to the Blu Ray.

And yes Criterion has released some excellent IFC films like Hunger, Antichrist, Che & Gomorrah.

Have not seen anything by Todd Solondz after Palindromes. I usually like his films I guess I'll have to see for myself.

hanshotfirst1138 01-22-16 10:06 PM

Is there a reason Criterion has done Le Samourai on DVD but not BD? Is it a legal issue? I'm to understand that the LS BD was horrendous.

I would love for Criterion to release a Blu Ray of Le Samourai but....

There are hundreds of other Criterion DVD's that are not on Blu Ray (Andrei Rublev, Ugetsu, The Shop on Main Street, Au Hasard Balthazar, etc...).
Who knows?

The lack of an Le Samourai upgrade is most likely due to the of availability (or lack there of) of a quality transfer. As you mentioned, the European BD is a mess (I think there's even an improved release that's still sub-par) and Criterion most likely learned their lesson after The Earrings of Madame De and Children of Paradise both crashed and burned.

Speculation is that Pathe's transfer/master is rubbish and that Criterion dont have access to materials to do their own (eg Purple Noon)

I wish I'd know that before I bought Criterion's Children of Paradise :(.

Makes sense. Sad that there's no release worth a damn out there. But I'd imagine materials are hard to find, and not in high demand.

Jesus Christ man, you expect me to do research before I spend money at Barnes and Noble's Criterion sale? You expect me to read and actually pay attention to things? Come on, man! I'm a millennial, you think I have the attention span for that ;)?

Do you have any reason to think this is happening? Or are you just hoping? If so, that's kind of random. As far as I know, Mill Creek has the rights.

So did Hidden Fortress go out of print? I still had a pending order from when it was $16.99 on Amazon a month ago and I just got an email asking to approve or cancel the order, because it's still out of stock. There's a couple of 3rd market sellers selling theirs for $200.

It could be that they are just phasing out the multi-format combo version and splitting it back to separate blu-ray & dvd.

That is what is happening. It's the reason why titles like the Zatoichi box set are OOP. It will be re-released soon.
