Splurged on an eBay purchase to fix Criterion’s mistake. If they do a second volume, I hope they learned their lesson.

I did something similar. I bought an empty 8-disc Viva Elite case off Amazon for $12, my wife found some (very familiar! :)) artwork for it at a decent resolution, and we printed it on nice-ish paper at FedEx Office.

The site is free to use, but you are required to register before you can download.

Another Unobtructed View update / no update:

-I shipped them off the scratched discs and they arrived the next day. After four days not hearing that they received them I contacted them and was told they had been received.
-However, as now two of the blurays I needed replaced were listed as on BACKORDER, they couldn't ship until ALL FOUR were available
-I sent back a rather disgruntled reply asking them to at least hold the other two so they don't sell out before the two out of stock ones get there / no reply
-Checking the site on Monday I found the two out of stocks were now listed as being available (as were the other two) and wrote them to inform them as my replacements hadn't shipped
-No reply

It's maddening. As it stands, they have my money and I have no discs. I was better off with the scratched ones :p

Ugh. The shipping nonsense, again. I went through exactly the same thing. Excerpts:

From their CS rep:
Our shipping policy is that we wait until we have at least 80% of an order before we ship. So that is why you haven't received your order yet.

My reply:
I could understand the 80% idea if it was free shipping, since it would be to minimize costs. But since I’m paying for shipping on each item (i.e. there is no discount for shipping multiple items, only a flat rate for each item), I would expect them to ship as they become available.
I’m also concerned that by the time the second item comes back into stock, the first may be out of stock, once again.

It was about a week after that email that I emailed the owner, directly, and had my order ship the next day.

The fact that they charge per item, yet need 80% of the items available, tells me that they're also making money off the shipping fees.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Damn, that's really lame. If they're charging per-item shipping, with no adjustment for multiple items, damn right they should be shipping out what they can when it's on-hand.
That really sucks that you guys have to deal with that.
That's one thing I miss about brick & mortar stores... stores like HMV would let you order any Criterion title, and you could just pick them up as each one came in. Good locations didn't even make you pay a deposit :)
I'm glad that Unobstructed View is filling a niche for Canadians, but it sounds like they're either really struggling or, like you said, they're making a tiny profit on shipping fees.

I have not yet patronized that shop, but I think a dedicated thread in the Store forum would be useful.

What's the deal with John Woo's The Killer and Hard Boiled. Are the rumors not true that Criterion has the license to these films? Imagine The Killer and Hard Boiled in 4K!? Guess I got to keep dreaming.

I'm not sure if the rumors are true or not, but Criterion has a habit of acquiring the rights to films and sitting on them for years and years. So even if you got confirmation, there's still no guarantee we'd see either of 'em anytime soon.

Even if they do have the rights and really want to release them, they very likely could be facing issues finding good source elements for the transfer, or gathering material for the bonus features.

I'll take the Haneke trilogy. 71 Fragments is not as good as the other two.

The one that's interesting to me is The Velvet Underground, because that's an Apple TV+ movie. Makes me wonder if we might see other Apple TV+ movies released physically by Criterion, such as Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth.

I'm a fan as well and watched it on Apple TV+. It's worth a watch for sure, but not necessarily compelling enough for me to want to revisit it again. I think it's very cool that Criterion is releasing it though and actually this one extra makes me want to own the disc:

Complete versions of some of the avant-garde films excerpted in the movie, including Piero Heliczer’s Venus in Furs (1965)
Edit: Ok, after just watching the clip on Criterion's website, I kind of do want to watch the doc again. They were such a great band and I could listen to John Cale talk all day long. He's got a Herzog-ian voice that would be great for narration.

The three Haneke films are on Criterion Channel. I watched The Seventh Continent. Not one I'd ever revisit, but it was interesting. I started Benny's Video and got to the part where he brings the girl over to watch videos. Stopped there, but I know where that scene was headed. Haneke, man.... damn.
I'll finish it along with 71 Fragments, but I think I can safely say this is probably a trilogy I don't need to own.

recommend to watch, but not worth the buy. didn't elevate the material much more than a VH1 special.

January announcements are up on Criterion's website.

January 3rd: The Adventures of Baron von Munchausen (UHD)
January 10th: Imitation of Life
January 17th: Lars von Trier's Europe Trilogy
January 24th: This Is Not a Burial, It's a Resurrection
January 31st: Bergman Island

Very excited for Bergman Island! I've been wondering why it didn't get a Blu release.

Nice to finally upgrade those von Trier films.

The Element of Crime was one of the very first Criterion dvds I ever bought back in the early 2000s. I still haven't watched it.

It was one of the first Criterions I bought as well. It was also the first DVD I returned (back then HMV accepted open DVDs for return/exchange).
It bored me to the point where I almost slipped into a coma.

 I should have been more specific, and that is to say that I watched the first 15 or 20 minutes and fell asleep and never put it in again.

Along similar lines, I first saw Europa (under its original American release title, Zentropa) and thought it was one of the most idiotic movies I'd ever sat through. The premise of it seems to be "a Hitchcock movie, if Hitchcock were a total moron."

So, if you all remember my post ordering 7 discs from the last Criterion sale...all arrived scratched?
Well, one was a pre-order: Lost Highway

It arrived yesterday. Also scratched!

:hairpull:

As a side note: My replacements all came ok, save for Night of the Living Dead (which had a minor scratch but I played it and it played ok so I decided to keep it instead of the hassle of exchanging with Unobstructed View again / Criterion itself sent me the Barry Lyndon replacement).

That's just bizarre. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd say UV is getting 'seconds' at a discounted price.

I haven’t been excited about a Criterion announcement in ages. All the other boutiques are getting the cult classic titles and Criterion is stuck with the “academic” classics.

It’s no wonder they’re doing things like Wall*E (which I will be getting) but they also might need to consider adjusting their prices too.

To take away from the conspiracy Barry Lyndon was from Amazon.com so...

To add to it, each time I place a UV Criterion disc in my player it brings up DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE FROM BEFORE...

Looks like the release date falls within the B&N sale, let's hope they make enough copies as I expect this one to be a good seller. I'll definitely be picking it up.

For a while there, walmart.com had preorders for 52% off and free shipping, so it was slightly less ($23.99 + tax) than it'd be at the B&N sale, but it looks like the price shot up in the past couple days.

I am impressed with CCs customer service. I started watching my copy of the Ingmar Bergman's Cinema set that I bought 2 years ago, and when I got to Disc 9 (From the Life of the Marionetts/Hour of the Wolf), during FtLotM the disc would lock up and skip ahead. Checking the disc I saw it was scratched. I emailed CC complaining about the packaging that they used for the set damaging the disc and after sending pictures and a video they sent me a replacement disc.I kind of figured at this point I was screwed and would have to deal with a problem disc.
