Wouldn't the rights have gone to Disney in the acquisition? And Disney will gladly license out R-rated material to other publisher.

Anyway, definitely getting MC, even though I have it on blu - and I love that cover.

Yes, but it doesn’t seem they have been licensing things out recently. So, I’m happy to see that they are willing to.

Excited for Miller's Crossing on Criterion. Not at all excited by that horrible cover art.

Same here, but that’s an automatic buy for me.

Disappointed there are no 4K releases in this announcement.

Millers Crossing is my favorite Coen so this will be a wonderful addition to the collection even though I have it already on BD.

Wish Ann Hui could've done a commentary for Boat People. She's fluent in English and she always contributed to strong Q&A's of her films that played at TIFF. Hopefully the interview with Kwan isn't just some ten-minute job.

Dare I hope that Criterion has other films from Hong Kong's New Wave in the wings? Some of the best don't speak highly of mainland China and considering the "local" government's new edict that allows them to retroactively ban previously-approved films (!), it's probably only a matter of time before countless pictures are suddenly removed from distribution and exhibition.

Could it be as simple as they acquired the rights pre-Disney and are just now getting around to it?

Do the February releases usually come before or after the typical 24-hour flash sale they do that month? Cuz' I'd totally get Miller's Crossing at the next sale, but I know they only include released titles that are in stock for those.

Miller’s Crossing comes out February 8, so it should be included in the next flash sale.

Boat People is an interesting choice, considering it is quite obscure and has never been released in any format. I've had it in my collection for years, but haven't watched it yet. This C.C. release must be somebody's personal labour of love.

Agreed!

I want their upcoming 4K releases but I might wait until they release Keepcase versions, as they have done with quite a few of their past Digipak/Digibook releases.

I don't mind that packaging, per se, as it's aesthetically nice, but functionality is rather poor - it's not so good if you just want simple access to the discs.

Just got Mulholland Drive in the mail. It's a digipak like the blu version but just slightly thicker.

I can deal with the Kane set, but it does seem cumbersome. It'll sit next to my 70th anniversary blu with some of those additional features/RKO 281. And I spoke too soon about owning all of Kurosawa's works...I still need the Russian movie. Back to eBay...

I haven't been following your Kurosawa saga. Is this about getting all of his films, including those that Criterion already released on another format (LD and DVD) onto Blu? If so, I'm all for it. I think Kagemusha is the only Criterion Blu I don't own (yet), but great films like Stray Dog, Red Beard, The Bad Sleep Well, even the Russian one, I only have those on Criterion laser and I'd love love love to upgrade them.

I haven't worked on upgrading my Kurosawa DVDs to Blu because I know that if I did they will announce a more cost-effective set like the Bergman and Fellini ones. I don't want to take the bullet.

It’s about getting all of his films, preferably in the latest format (Criterion or otherwise). Thankfully, most of them are available via Criterion, including via two Eclipse sets of his early works.

AK100 (which I don’t own) is the only way through which Criterion released Madadayo, and so that has been on my radar since 2010 during the monthly updates. For now, I ordered an older distributor’s DVD from eBay.

Ran 4K just came in today. The horse documentary is just a bonus, even Kurosawa scholars don’t talk about it in their books.

Here they are in chronological order:

Ah. Combined formats (DVD and Blu). I get it now.

Looking at that photo, there's still a lot that need to make the jump to Blu. Dersu Uzala never made it to Criterion DVD? Cuz they did release it on laser. And interestingly enough, Kagemusha and Dreams were NOT released on the old 12" format from Criterion.

Red Beard is a really underrated film, with the exception of one really out-of-place samurai fight. But yeah, the whole thing about saving the soul of a teenage girl sold into prostitution was riveting and heartbreaking.

Never knew Dersu Uzala was a Criterion LD. It’s interesting what made the jump and what didn’t, but I’m sure we’ll be getting 4Ks of the more popular stuff in the years to come.

My Once Upon a Time in China set came yesterday. The box set looks pretty much the same as the Bruce Lee set.

I'll try to check it out this weekend depending on time.

There's a replacement program for the Blu-ray disc in the Citizen Kane set. (The UHD disc is fine, but the BD has wonky contrast.)

This is becoming a shit storm with Criterion. Kane and Wong Kar Wai. Such travesties and you got to jump through hoops. Write your name with sharpie on all Wai set and then take picture of all. So ridiculous.

I went through the first film and is so much better than my R1 DVD that I have which I expected. I need to go through the rest of the films.

Quality control is a thing of the past. The labels used to have more staffing when media was generating tons of cash and everything was double and triple-checked.

Yup, the packaging for Kane blows ass. Feels like I have to work and smudge to get a disc out. What is it with Criterion and ludicrous paper cases...I emailed Mulvaney about the initial BD cases in 2008 and he acknowledged but didn't address the issue. But I'd like to think I helped in some tiny way towards normal cases.

I probably wouldn't have opened Kane for a while if not for the replacement program. I thought everybody was exaggerating, but that packaging is the worst! I had to dig and pull more than I felt comfortable with just to get the discs loose and, of course, with a big thumbprint on it when I did.

Criterion: You wanted a 4k? Here's your 4k, fuckers! Good luck getting the discs out.

I am so waiting on ordering on the chance they'll re-release in a standard case with corrected disc. Eh, I'm more concerned about the packaging

Of all the new 4K Criterion releases, Citizen Kane really is the only one with outright bad packaging. The others are... fine.

While the packaging itself is fine, the artwork on many of them are just plain...boring.

I think I mentioned in another thread how much more impressive the presentation of the new Ran 4K steelbook is than anything Criterion has done lately. I guess they're going for the more staid, academic look, but film is a visual medium and they should also remember that.

Dan 12-01-21 12:11 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I do agree that the art has been uninspiring. I don't think it's outright terrible.

That RAN steel book is gorgeous.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

And also the big Godzilla book thing. I would have much preferred just a normal box with classic style Godzilla artwork, as opposed to the pop-art style we got.

I'm following someone on twitter who is making another custom design and I'm probably going to toss them a coin for a set.

OldBoy 12-01-21 07:13 PM

Wong Kar Wai set is terrible packaging as well. It’s a fucking fold upon fold of discs and cardboard. It was absolutely terrible. Kane first bother me to much but these puzzle like packages are upsetting.

The Red Shoes wasn't included in the sale. It will be $24.99 when it eventually goes 50%.
