There's a replacement program for the Blu-ray disc in the Citizen Kane set. (The UHD disc is fine, but the BD has wonky contrast.)

Apparently, the contrast is messed up at the 30-minute mark of the film and continues through the remainder of the movie. The 4K disc in the set is fine. There's an address to mail back the Blu-ray to, and Criterion will mail you the updated Blu-ray plus a $10 coupon to use on Criterion.com. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Hell yea! This is one of my favorite films of the year. I hope they put out the other of Trier’s Oslo trilogy.

Looks like my first criterion UHD will be the Last Waltz.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I got an email from Pitney Bowes that seems to indicate my replacement Citizen Kane disc shipped.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Why is Robbie Robertson supervising the digital transfer for the Last Waltz? Did I miss the When We Were Kings George Foreman restoration or something?
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Sean Baker mentioned on the DGA podcast with Lizzie Borden that his first three films were recently restored and will be released by a “prestige label”. One that Borden worked with… Working Girls.

The Kane replacement discs are shipping out now. I just got a Pitney Bowes notification about mine.

I guess I should send in for that replacement disc, even if I won't really load that disc ever. But I will be there for Shaft, especially if it's a 4K release.

I think I got Kane already. That and Wai set. Was pretty quick.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
FYI: CITIZEN KANE replacement discs will begin shipping and arriving in late January / early February, as we work to get them out as soon as possible.
The Pitney / USPS notification you received is legitimate, but it may be some time before you see any movement on the tracking status, as shipping labels are being created well in advance of the discs being physically placed in the mail. |

THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT is a Fox title, so perhaps another sign that not everything in that catalog is buried forever in the Disney Vault?

This is now the third title this year from Fox.
As for the movie itself, I'm scared that this will be yet another Fox cinemascope title drenched in teal. I watched the Twilight Time blu of Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? not too long ago and immediately googled to see if I could find an old dvd copy. The blu was borderline unwatchable at times. |

I haven't played my DVD of For All Mankind in a while, if it hasn't held up I could upgrade.

My CK replacement disc and $10 GC arrived today.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Just getting Walker on BD. Funny enough I have the DVD currently checked out from the library. Such a crazy film. William Walker was a scumbag.

Here’s an article from Criterion on the process behind the Kane packaging. They seem to revel in the negative reaction it got:

I like every one of those images about 1000 times more than the K.

I hate when commercial creatives try to outthink their customers.
It’s how we get packaging like this or the big Godzilla book. It’s how we get that dragon show with the bad ending or the space show that doesn’t really fit where it’s supposed to or the space movie that doesn’t really fit where it’s supposed to. There is always value in pushing creative limits, but if it becomes unrecognizable then what have you accomplished? |

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Apparently, there isn an issue with the A Hard Days Night 4K disc and a replacement program is forthcoming.
At 1:23:14 there should be a reaction shot because Grandpa came up through the floor, instead it shows John singing the wrong song. At 1:24:43 there should be a shot of a helicopter waiting for them, instead it shows a shot of the control room where they are still performing. Thanks for reaching out and apologies for this disappointing error which affects our recently released A HARD DAY'S NIGHT 4K UHD disc. We will have replacement discs on hand in March. If you'd like a replacement, please email us back with the following: Your name and a mailing address that will be valid for at least the next 3 months A photo of the defective A HARD DAY'S NIGHT 4K UHD disc with your name and date written on the front/art side (using a sharpie or paint marker - you can write this info on the lighter portion of the disc, and take a photo against a light source so your name and date are visible). You do not need to break the disc. The Blu-ray and DVD of A HARD DAY'S NIGHT are not affected and do not need to be replaced You're welcome to submit this information closer to March, if you prefer, or contact the original vendor now regarding refund, exchange, or credit options. |

 at these continual issues. But as for the actual movie, there was no need for any comedy during the final performance. The Grandpa stage shit should have been cut. His antics were already getting old by the time they left the casino.

Nice. I always wondered why Criterion never handled that title and I believe I even mentioned it a bunch of pages back.
One of the very best films of the 90s. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
If they have John Dahl, they should get Last Seduction - they did play it on their channel.

The existing Blu-ray of The Last Seduction from Scorpion Releasing doesn't look so hot. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
It’s John Sayles in the photo, not John Dahl.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Ack. Got Lonestar confused with Dahl's Red Rock West.
Still, Criterion has played Last Seduction, and it is in dire need of a good blu-ray. |

Also (and this stems from that tweet quoted above), Sayles' movie is called Lone Star. Lonestar is a country band known for "Amazed." |

It’s how we get packaging like this or the big Godzilla book. The World of Wong Kar Wai boxset is probably the one I hate the most though. It was just a pain to deal with, and the book is kind of crap. I wish that they would just go back to simpler boxsets, like they did with the Van Peebles set. |
