Was there a rumored Criterion for Hannah and Her Sister's?
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Woody Allen doesn't allow special features, so there wouldn't be much of a reason for Criterion to release it. If you're region free, just get the Arrow. Otherwise the MGM is fine.

Not sure if it's a price mistake or not but David Lynch: The Art Life is $16.99 on Amazon currently. I threw in a pre-order just to be safe.

It'll be $14.99 during future B&N sales and the Criterion Flash sale. List on that one is only $29.95.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
It's retailing for $400 on the Criterion site, so as it's been said before with other titles, this should be $200 during the next Flash Sale they have.

That's an amazing set, though I don't see a spine#?
I wonder if this means they can re-issue Tokyo Olympiad by itself? That's one on my wishlist. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
It will be interesting, if frustrating, to watch the quality of the films go from 35mm clarity down to SD video in the '70s and '80s before rebounding to HD video in later years.

The Piano Teacher is compelling and thematic, but also really dark, disturbing, and ultimately tough to watch.

Well, not quite, considering they were both shot on film.
DS9 and Voyager have not been restored yet because CBS and Paramount don't want to spend the money on less popular properties (and allegedly the TNG Blu-rays didn't sell as well as hoped), but they were also shot on film and could be restored at some point. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Kind of scratching my head with the Olympic films. Does Criterion really think there's a big enough market that'll want to spend that much on films that probably has a very low re-watchability factor?
Not sure this lines up with the interests of the average Criterion customer either. |

Yeah, did Milo somehow miss the fact that CBS Films reconstructed and restored the entirety of Star Trek: TNG in high definition?

I was actually thinking about how I've been rewatching TOS lately, the first DVD release versions before they were remastered and there was something in how the film grain gave it such a different texture than the other series. It really helped give it an ephemeral quality, like you were really seeing documentary footage of those people out on the frontier. What we were talking about again? |

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....NL._SX342_.jpg If you liked those two then you will like The Piano Teacher. I revisit it every once in a while because I'm a huge fan of Michael Haneke. Now if only Criterion can get their hands on Cache. I still have to upgrade my old Kino dvd's of The Piano Teacher and Code Unknown. Elle is Paul Verhoeven who IMO is nothing like Haneke. |

Not sure this lines up with the interests of the average Criterion customer either. If the deal with Criterion hadn't worked out, I'm sure that a virtually identical set would have been released through a different label. I have a feeling that the set will sell extremely well to schools and universities, who will screen the movies to students for the historical value. |

I've never cared much for national team sports, but I fucking love the Olympics. I'm getting that set.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm excited about the Olympics set but understand why others might be put off by it - because of content or price. I'll wait for a Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble for 50% off, plus member discount, plus B&N credit card cash back. That will at least lessen the pain.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Looks like Le Samourai is getting a Bluray reissue for November.
Jabberwocky, Desert Hearts, and The Philadelphia Story are others. |

Definitely in for Samourai and Philly Story.
I love Gilliam, but Jabberwocky was... weird, even for him. Maybe a good transfer would improve it, as I've only seen it on a terrible looking VHS pan-n-scan. |

Probably Jabberwocky (Gilliam movies can be hit and miss for me though), looks like that might be just in time for the B&N November sale. I would like to know more about Desert Hearts though. I'm a sucker for good road movies.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Jabberwocky looks neat. Just how gory is it?
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Jabberwocky is like a less funny, more weird version of a Monty Python movie. It's been many years since I saw it, but my recollection is that there are a few classic moments, but overall it's pretty much a slog.
It will be interesting to see what Criterion is able to do with Le Samourai. Hopefully they learned their lesson with Children of Paradise and Madame De and don't just pass along the crappy European transfer. |
