Criterion has also had a few 24 hour sales on their website, so I'm guessing we'll see maybe one of those before the November B&N sale.

I didn't realize (or keep forgetting) that "...Tambien" is an Alfonso Cuaron movie. I've never seen it, and have really never been tempted to, until now.

Already guessed at a couple other places as Hellman directed set of movies.

Yeah, Monte Hellman makes a lot more sense. Not real interested in the films...unless we could finally get a good copy of China 9, Liberty 37

It is actually the Virginia Mayo Western Collection which will comprise these 5 films:
Along the Great Divide
Colorado Territory
Devil's Canyon
Fort Dobbs
Fort Utah
I can't wait for this set! Virginia is one ripe tomato. Hopefully I will be able to bring home the bacon to pay for this set...lettuce see.

Breaking News! Criterion abandons dual format releases!

I much prefer the clear plastic cases to their digipacks.

Funny.
As I was driving home from B&N last night, having picked up All That Heaven Allows, I was musing about Criterion returning to the clear cases. I like the cases better than the digi packs and slipboxes because those tend to get banged up in shipping more often - but I'm not a fan of overlapping discs in the cases.
Sometimes it's nice having the flexibility of an extra dvd enclosed, but more often than not I would just prefer streamlined packaging and more room for a single disc (and booklet) to breathe.

Not sure what to think about this. It's certainly not surprising given that they went back to dvd only releases within a month or two of the switch over. I personally wasn't bothered by the dual-format releases since the price didn't change, but I do prefer the plastic cases. I recently picked up Red River and man is that a big package. Sure it has the novel, but the two extra discs are totally unnecessary.
That said, there was a reason Criterion went this direction in the first place. It's obviously going to cost them more money to go back to separate releases. As a fan of their company, I want them to be as profitable as possible. I guess we'll see what happens.

How many of their releases had booklets or features that were dual-format only?
I guess some of these will become collectibles.

I wonder how small that Zatoichi set is going to be when they shrink it from 27 discs down to 9. It's a beautiful box and everything, but I'd much rather have something smaller on the shelf.

I liked the dual-format, and the digipacks. Though there were some releases that didn't need a 2nd dvd disc, so they were just two discs in a standard plastic case.
