Honesty, the Before Trilogy are the only movies of Linklater's that I care for at all.

School of Rock? I love that flick. Soft spot for his animated stuff, too. But yeah, very hit-and-miss.

I'm surprised you didn't care for Dazed and Confused.

I'm kinda ok with it actually. Bought some other good stuff with $40. Can you believe I didn't have The Naked Gun in any format!! Egads...

My Amazon order for the Before Trilogy has been stuck on "preparing to ship" all week.

Yeah, that surprises me, too.

Great music, great cast, and an entertaining story. I don't think I know of anyone that didn't like it. Maybe it's an age thing? I felt like I knew many people like those in the film.

And the bizarre thought of the evening... The guy that played Mitch is 40 years old, now.

When D&C came out, it depicted a time 17 years earlier, it came out 24 years ago.

Yeah, it's fucking insane, isn't it?

The sixteen years between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace seemed like a lifetime, but the eighteen years between The Phantom Menace and now doesn't seem nearly half as long.

he shoots, he scores!! was able to get this for $40 from Amazon. after i had seen it went back down to $70 on site, i called, talked to the right person, got a $30 promotional credit and rebought. nice!

A bit of luck... Hollywood Suite (A Canadian cable movie package and OnDemand service that I subscribe to) is getting all three Before movies in the near future. So a blind buy will not be necessary. :)

I can't remember the last time there was a movie I wanted to love more than Everybody Wants Some! And while I did like it, ultimately it didn't meet my expectations. Hopefully its a film that will grow on me.

Yeah, that's pretty much on par with how I felt about it.

Maybe it's because I'm not a baseball fan?

I'll watch it again in a bit. As I said, I liked it, but was still a bit disappointed. Perhaps I expected too much.

Yeah, I mean, that one's OK, I guess, but the movie just never really connected with me. My formative years were in the '80s, not the '70s, and I've never been a stoner.

I also felt that it tries too hard to be American Graffiti. Ironically, American Graffiti is set so far before my time that it plays as a period piece, which I find easier to get into. Dazed and Confused has a weird Uncanny Valley thing going on for me. I sort-of remember the '70s, but have never considered that to be "my" decade.

me as well ... concurrently I didn't attend college (well, okay a year) and I've never found the humor of 'Animal House' to be funny (at all).

I was in high school in the late '80s, and besides the time period and getting stoned, it was EXACTLY like my high school. Just the way everyone behaved and related to each other, with the different types of kids and cliques was so thoroughly authentic to my experience, that I fell into it right away, and it stuck with me because it was a just a funny, feel good flick.

Almost shut it off a couple of times but trooped to the end in case I was missing something, and no I didn't miss a goddamn thing.
For great music, great cast, and an entertaining story I'll take Fast Times at Ridgemont High any day.

D&C isn't really on the radar for the average movie-goer... so there won't be a lot of people who hate it. I'm sure plenty of Joe Sixpacks would hate it if they watched it.

When talking about a movie that has had a high exposure with few who didn't like - Shawshank Redemption comes to mind.

My wife and I love D&C. We tried sharing it with a couple we are close with and did a rewatch with them. But they really didn't like it. Usually we do enjoy movies together, but this didn't translate. Oh, and our friend's wife loves Shawshank.

I have the Criterion DVD of Straw Dogs. I was wondering the other day whether it would ever get a Blu-ray release. Good news that Criterion has their hands on it. I didn't think they would get it since the DVD went OOP.

I suggested Mirror because there's no US Blu edition. Sacrifice & Nostalghia already have good looking Blus by Kino so I have doubts about Criterion editions. Who knows, anything's possible.

New announcements. Straw Dogs is coming in June along with Hitchcock's The Lodger, Ugetsu, Marseilles trilogy and They Live By Night.

Is there another movie that will be included with The Lodger, though? The email said "a macabre double bill from Alfred Hitchcock, but I listed all the covers they included.

By the way, The Lodger is a very cool announcement. That's not one I was anticipating.

Never mind. I looked on their Facebook page. Apparently, Downhill will also be included. Cool news!

Okay, so stupid question...even though I've seen thousands of movies...I've never seen Straw Dogs. Is it really really graphic? I mean...I've seen some horrible disturbing movies (and still own some of them), but as I get older unless they are classics, I try to stay away from the stuff. I've heard of the movie plenty of times and the premise sounds intriguing, but just curious about the violence. :)

andicus 03-16-17 08:34 AM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

It is quite violent, and graphic, yes. After all, it is a Peckinpah film.

IMHO it's worth it, though. It is really good. Absolutely a classic.

It's a must see, IMO. One of my favorite films.

IMO it's Sam Peckinpah's masterpiece. It is however also violent, misogynistic and disturbing. Not as bad as stuff like Salo or I Spit on Your Grave.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Remember that "Straw Dogs" remake from a few years ago, when the director took it upon himself to "correct" Peckinpah's "error", and

Spoiler:
removed the smile from the rape scene?

Way to miss the entire goddamn point of the scene, fuckface.

Thanks for the comparisons. Salo, you couldn't pay me to watch...I've heard so much about that movie, I felt like I've seen it. I Spit On Your Grave, saw it in college, that was enough for me. Actually the bathroom scene was enough for me. So maybe this is along the lines (or a little worse) of say...the Dragon Tattoo movies (just trying to think of a good comparison, violence wise).

dex14 03-16-17 10:30 AM

I would say Dragon Tattoo is worse.

..straw dogs is an excellent early peckinpah movie with outstanding performances by Dustin Hoffman and Susan George...I can't wait to pick up this bluray by criterion...
