Honesty, the Before Trilogy are the only movies of Linklater's that I care for at all.

The Before Trilogy is amazing. My wife and I (well then girlfriend, now wife) loved Before Sunrise from the moment we rented the VHS(!). The two sequels were also perfect. So glad this came to Criterion, and doubly glad I got in on the Amazon price mistake. Hope to do some rewatching this weekend.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
My Amazon order for the Before Trilogy has been stuck on "preparing to ship" all week.

Great music, great cast, and an entertaining story. I don't think I know of anyone that didn't like it. Maybe it's an age thing? I felt like I knew many people like those in the film. And the bizarre thought of the evening... The guy that played Mitch is 40 years old, now. This guy: http://i68.tinypic.com/21b7wqb.jpg |

When D&C came out, it depicted a time 17 years earlier, it came out 24 years ago.

The sixteen years between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace seemed like a lifetime, but the eighteen years between The Phantom Menace and now doesn't seem nearly half as long. |

he shoots, he scores!! was able to get this for $40 from Amazon. after i had seen it went back down to $70 on site, i called, talked to the right person, got a $30 promotional credit and rebought. nice!

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
A bit of luck... Hollywood Suite (A Canadian cable movie package and OnDemand service that I subscribe to) is getting all three Before movies in the near future. So a blind buy will not be necessary. :)

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I can't remember the last time there was a movie I wanted to love more than Everybody Wants Some! And while I did like it, ultimately it didn't meet my expectations. Hopefully its a film that will grow on me.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Yeah, that's pretty much on par with how I felt about it.
Maybe it's because I'm not a baseball fan? I'll watch it again in a bit. As I said, I liked it, but was still a bit disappointed. Perhaps I expected too much. |

I also felt that it tries too hard to be American Graffiti. Ironically, American Graffiti is set so far before my time that it plays as a period piece, which I find easier to get into. Dazed and Confused has a weird Uncanny Valley thing going on for me. I sort-of remember the '70s, but have never considered that to be "my" decade. |

Great music, great cast, and an entertaining story. I don't think I know of anyone that didn't like it. Almost shut it off a couple of times but trooped to the end in case I was missing something, and no I didn't miss a goddamn thing. For great music, great cast, and an entertaining story I'll take Fast Times at Ridgemont High any day. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
D&C isn't really on the radar for the average movie-goer... so there won't be a lot of people who hate it. I'm sure plenty of Joe Sixpacks would hate it if they watched it.
When talking about a movie that has had a high exposure with few who didn't like - Shawshank Redemption comes to mind. |

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Stalker!!!!!
My most wanted. I am thrilled. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Hopefully Mirror will be next.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I was wondering a few days ago why Straw Dogs never got an upgrade to Blu. Time to sell off that DVD.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I have heard nothing but endless praise for Stalker. Definitely on my watch list.
Glad to see Straw Dogs getting an upgrade. About time. |

I have the Criterion DVD of Straw Dogs. I was wondering the other day whether it would ever get a Blu-ray release. Good news that Criterion has their hands on it. I didn't think they would get it since the DVD went OOP.

I have the DVD of course but I'll upgrade considering I'll never be able to find it. Love this one. Peckinpah classic!

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
New announcements. Straw Dogs is coming in June along with Hitchcock's The Lodger, Ugetsu, Marseilles trilogy and They Live By Night.
Is there another movie that will be included with The Lodger, though? The email said "a macabre double bill from Alfred Hitchcock, but I listed all the covers they included. By the way, The Lodger is a very cool announcement. That's not one I was anticipating. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Never mind. I looked on their Facebook page. Apparently, Downhill will also be included. Cool news!

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Okay, so stupid question...even though I've seen thousands of movies...I've never seen Straw Dogs. Is it really really graphic? I mean...I've seen some horrible disturbing movies (and still own some of them), but as I get older unless they are classics, I try to stay away from the stuff. I've heard of the movie plenty of times and the premise sounds intriguing, but just curious about the violence. :)
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
It is quite violent, and graphic, yes. After all, it is a Peckinpah film.
IMHO it's worth it, though. It is really good. Absolutely a classic. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
It's a must see, IMO. One of my favorite films.

Remember that "Straw Dogs" remake from a few years ago, when the director took it upon himself to "correct" Peckinpah's "error", and
Spoiler:
Way to miss the entire goddamn point of the scene, fuckface. |

IMO it's Sam Peckinpah's masterpiece. It is however also violent, misogynistic and disturbing. Not as bad as stuff like Salo or I Spit on Your Grave.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I would say Dragon Tattoo is worse.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
..straw dogs is an excellent early peckinpah movie with outstanding performances by Dustin Hoffman and Susan George...I can't wait to pick up this bluray by criterion...
