The British release is the same disc. Studio Canal performed the transfer and disc authoring. Lionsgate just distributes it for them in the U.S.

Fortunately, not the dorkiness or social awkwardness. And not the snaggletooth. :)

Criterion doesn't have rights to Studiocanal any more.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I don't believe Le Samourai is with Studiocanal. The Criterion dvd is still very much in print, unlike the other Melvilles in the collection. The delay almost certainly has to do with the lack of a quality transfer to use for a new blu-ray. A new HD master was created some years back in France and was completely butchered in the same way that the HD transfers for Earrings of Madame De... and Children of Paradise were butchered. I think Criterion learned their lesson and passed on the opportunity to release it until something better comes along.

If you're nerdy enough to be part of a DVD forum, then yes, it is.

In for Ghost World and Othello.

Its funny, during various points every month I find myself looking forward to the 15th for Criterion announcements.

I think you'll enjoy it, but don't know to what degree and if it'll have replay value to you.

With all the streaming services available, there's no point in blind-buying any movie or music. Watch it first and then see if it's worth owning. Why take the chance when you don't have to?

Love Ghost World. Great news, but a little sparce in extras. Why couldn't Buscemi and ScarJo contribute? Wasted opportunity...

I found that when it's on cable, it's hard to stop watching, so that's good replay value. But you offer sane advice. Give it a try on streaming first, and then see if it's worth revisiting.

I'm the same way with this movie... as well as many others.

If I come across it while flipping channels, I'll stop and watch it - even if it's already half-way in. But that doesn't mean it's worth owning. It's only worth owning if I'm willing to go out of my way and put the disc in the player and watch the movie from beginning to end. For me - there are 2 types of replay value... one for TV and one for disc. Only that latter makes it worth owning.

My review of The Man Who Fell to Earth was delayed, but here it finally is with screencap comparisons that I think are pretty damning for Studio Canal.

Those comparisons don't look good for the Studio Canal transfer. The color timing on the Criterion looks superior.

Anyone go through The Before Trilogy? Are the movies rewatchable?

E Unit 03-02-17 08:34 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Seriously? Yeah, they're rewatchable. It's an outstanding trilogy, and the extras are very good. Only head-scratcher is why Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy didn't do commentaries for the first couple of movies.

I fucking had it for $40 Amazon price mistake, canceled yesterday because didn't think it would be movies I would rewatch and even at that price did think worth it. Called Amazon twice, but nothing they can do. Oh well. Still get it around $30 digitally...

Yeah, but the extras is where the gold's at. The remastered picture is just wonderful on all three, but unless they updated the digital release, those were absolute crap.

I haven't seen any of the three. I absolutely love Dazed and Confused, really like Boyhood. and was a bit disappointed with Everybody Wants Some.

Pretty sure I'm going to blind buy this set when I can find it for a decent price. Am I going to like them?

I bought the set blindly when it was on sale for $40. Watched the first one last night and loved it - best movie I've seen in a while. Lots of fun, clever dialogue.

Sad and hilarious story at the same time. I personally won't take it digitally even for free.

Stream it first to see if you would like it - even if it's just the first movie. Why take the chance when you don't have to?

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I've been looking for it (Before Sunrise), but have only been able to find the third movie via Netflix. I don't want to watch them out of order, so I haven't watched it.

Boyhood was a blind buy for me (I didn't even know about the 'filmed over 12 years' business) that I bought due to a recommendation from a friend.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The Before Trilogy is amazing. My wife and I (well then girlfriend, now wife) loved Before Sunrise from the moment we rented the VHS(!). The two sequels were also perfect. So glad this came to Criterion, and doubly glad I got in on the Amazon price mistake. Hope to do some rewatching this weekend.

For me Linklater is hit or miss. I got in on the $40 deal and if I don't like it, I can always sell it for almost the same price. The status on mine is preparing to ship.
