And for all you pervs there's an added bonus of bush. Extended Julianne Moore and brief Frances McDormand.

Yeah, Julianne Moore spends about five minutes proving that she is a natural redhead.

My god, it's fucking great. Don't know if I want to upgrade from my Criterion DVD, but yeah, it's an amazing movie.

Didn't know Boyhood was coming out. I may have to double-dip on that one -- my favorite film of 2014.

I also have the dvd and I don't think I will be upgrading. I have to be a little choosy when it upgrading Criterions. If the dvd looks good enough and anamorphic it stays.
I can't afford to upgrade everything, so I focus more on the earlier releases like Branded to Kill, Amarcord, etc... that look pretty bad.

It sounds like this is a limited edition so it may not be the regular blus inside a box. It comes with a 100 page hardcover book containing the essays from the blus and a intro written by Neil Gaiman. I may have to sell the two films if this is going to be a legit box set and not just a bundling of the three blus.

I probably won't get the GDT Boxed set, because I already have Cronos and Devil's Backbone, so just Pan's for me. I don't mind not having the box and book, because I already pre-ordered the full sized coffee table book due out around the same time as the set.

Is the Gaiman intro exclusive to the set, or is from one of the books. Did an Amazon search and couldn't find any Gaiman introductions to GDT books.

I'm not sure. Guess we won't know until someone gets more info. My gut feeling is that this is going to contain digipaks too.

I'll gladly double dip on Boyhood and upgrade my Pan's Labyrinth DVD.

hanshotfirst1138 07-20-16 09:19 PM

I wonder if I can get rid of my two-disc set and Zavvi Steelbook? Will this retain all the extras and the non-DNR transfer? Knowing Criterion, I hope so.

FYI if anyone has the previous 2 GDT films, there will an option to buy the trilogy case w/ book.

the BOX+BOOK with no discs, I meant.. So already owned copies in your collection can be added to it.

I didn't know it was known here

That's news to me. Very welcome indeed. Bravo to Criterion for giving those that purchased the first two as they came out an option to make an equivalent set.

So where is the official statement that Criterion is going to offer the GDT box and book separately? I haven't found it.

Neil M. 07-21-16 11:50 AM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

There is no official statement because Criterion hasn't said it. They have said that this will be completely different packaging and not just a bundling of the amarays. I seriously doubt they are going to sell it separately. I think people are confusing the ability to buy replacement cover art and booklets for a fee.

Well hopefully any news (I haven't seen anything on the official packaging either way) will come officially soon. It would really be a good move on Criterion's part to reward the fans that bought the first two with something other than just hoping they double dip. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't have much hope they would every get PL and didn't think this trilogy would even be possible. If I did, I would have held off buying the first two. I haven't even opened Backbone yet. :(

Didn't Criterion also do a bundling for its Whit Stillman movies? I realize there wasn't a book included with that one, but did they offer to send replacement packaging for that? I think the answer to that question will probably be the same for the Del Toro set.

hanshotfirst1138 07-21-16 03:54 PM

I wish they'd do it for the Hitchcock set.

I just got that one through B&N and it is just a outer box over the same single release cases. But unlike GTD I figured that Whit box set was a sure thing and waited. The box was a great deal over buying them one at a time.

The original film for McC&MM had been in terrible shape, pretty much since the movie came out. I'm sure restoring it has been a herculean effort.

I did something incredibly stupid today. I went out to Barnes & Noble to grab one more batch of Criterion discs before the sale ends, and I stupidly bought the Wim Wenders Road Trilogy box set on DVD rather than Blu-ray. I didn't realize the mistake until I'd already taken off the shrinkwrap, which means that I can't return it.

Anyone know someone who might want to buy this on DVD for, say, $40? That's 60% off MSRP (I paid $50 at B&N). I listed it on eBay but nobody's even looked at it yet.

^^ You should at least attempt to try and return it and just tell them the truth. Them mixing CC DVD and BDs together now could be blamed for it, as well. Though be kind and polite about it, of course.

Well, I went back to the store with very low expectations, but, amazingly, I got a pretty cool manager who was nice enough to make an exception and do a straight exchange. Whew! What a relief! That was almost a very expensive mistake.

That's good! For future reference, if you paid with your credit card, many cards offer "Return Protection" which means the card issuer itself will take the item and reimburse you for the purchase if the retailer refuses to take a return. More info here:

In some cases you have to pay shipping, but it would have been less than the amount of loss (and fees) you were willing to take selling it on eBay.

So basically, it sounds like they're retaining all of the extras except for the Charlie Rose interview? I can get rid of my steelbook, but have to keep my two-disc DVD for that interview? Damn. Must be a rights issue or something.

Anything can happen but I doubt it since the Director's Cut is the Coen's preferred version, and Criterion always does what the director(s) want.

The Lone Wolf & Cub series is rumored to be announced today.
