I could see Criterion releasing it and I could see it being awesome.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not counting Criterion out. They've released Do The Right Thing (and She's Gotta Have It on laserdisc), and a new director-approved transfer and commentary for a Buena Vista catalog title is certainly a change of pace from what we've seen on titles released just in the past week alone, like Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity.

I'm just saying that I wouldn't take what we've seen so far as clear confirmation that Criterion is putting it out. With that said, it sounds like whoever IS putting it out is giving it nice treatment, and I'm looking forward to its release.

And here I thought that would be unlikely, since Le Samouraļ is one of Studio Canal's titles. Then again, I thought the same for Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge.

*shrugs*

I'll still pick it up if it comes out...

Would love a 25th hour criterion... glad to know it's being worked on and will get some decent treatment, whoever ends up releasing it.

Here's another bit of backlash against Heaven's Gate getting fancy Criterion treatment, an article entitled "Don't Buy The Bullshit":

Well, he's certainly entitled to his opinion. I'm certainly planning on checking it out when it's released...

Not that it's any indication of anything, but Le Samourai is a fairly new "rumor". We're also missing an upgrade of Grey Gardens that was hinted at a few months ago in a newsletter, as well as On The Waterfront and Heaven's Gate. Not sure if anything is missing from the big January drawing at this point.

Y Tu Mama Tambien was in the January 2011 and the 2012 drawing, and still hasn't been announced. Weekend (the Godard one) was one of the teased titles from the 2012 sketch.

Perhaps not missing in a 'promised' sense, but certainly missing, emotionally.

Can we get a little more Kurosawa going, Criterion? It's been a good while now. How 'bout Rashomon or Ikiru? Or both!

Kind of the point I was trying to make...maybe 20 years from now, Criterion will try to convince us all that BATTLESHIP was a misundertsood masterpiece.

Le Samourai would be a rare Day One buy from me. Can't get enough Alain Delon.

I've never cared for Heaven's Gate, but psycho nutbag Jeff Wells ranting against it suddenly makes me want to give the film a second chance. Anything that Wells hates that much must have something good going for it.
