Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV
More Hammer HD goodness on the way, from The Hollywood Reporter:
Quatermass and the Pit looked fantastic, so I'm sure all of these will be superb editions as well.
StudioCanal, Germany’s Anolis Entertainment, U.K. studio facility Pinewood and illuminate Hollywood fka HTV are among the partners coming together to breathe new life into the library of titles from legendary British horror production house and label Hammer. The project aims to bring over 30 movies into HD format for Blu-ray and new media exploitation...Dracula Prince of Darkness will be the first title scheduled for release in the global restoration project and will rollout in the U.K. in conjunction with StudioCanal in March 2012.
The partnership continues throughout the spring for the releases of The Reptile and The Plague of The Zombies, and will also include The Devil Rides Out, Rasputin the Mad Monk and The Mummy’s Shroud during the course of the year.
Hammer will also release definitive versions of a trio of famous titles in the U.K.: The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula and The Mummy.
As well as featuring a fully-restored HD picture and restored sound, the re-mastered films will include newly-filmed extras, including interviews with cast members, the partners said.

More details on the StudioCanal Hammer titles:
...Among them is Terence Fisher's Dracula, which will incorporate a recently-discovered extended death scene considered too gruesome in 1958...Some discoveries have already been made - the original UK title sequence has been reinstated on The Plague of The Zombies, while the UK title cards for Dracula: Prince of Darkness will be included on its release.
Other classic gothic titles slated for restoration are Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter, The Mummy, Frankenstein Created Woman, The Lost Continent, The Reptile Slave Girls and The Vengeance of She.

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV
Regarding the Hammer titles, does StudioCanal region lock their BD releases? If so, can anyone recommend a good region-free BD player or a US player that could easily be made region-free?

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV
Their release of Quatermass and the Pit is RB, so I'm guessing these will be as well. The Insignia player from Best Buy used to be hackable via remote, but apparently the newer firmware disables that. However, if you download and install the earlier firmware, you should be okay. Don't quote me on that though. There also might still be older Insignias in stores that don't have the newer firmware. They're pretty cheap too, mine was $79.

From Blu-ray.com --
Other than possibly Sawdust and Tinsel Criterion releases of these are unlikely, so be picking this up. I've noticed that AE releases are frequently heavily discounted a few months after release, so I'll hold off on the Bergman and Mizoguchi sets until then. Nice to see AE finally delving into some of their catalog titles, in box sets no less!
Independent British distributors Artificial Eye have revealed that they are planning to release a box set with five films by legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman: It Rains On Our Love (1946), A Ship Bound For India (1947), Sawdust And Tinsel (1953), Dreams (1955), and So Close To Life (1958).
The exact technical specs, region coding status and supplemental features to be included on this release are unknown at the moment, but the preliminary release date set by the distributors is April 23.
