Jaws - 8/14/12

Pretty interesting video. I've never actually seen how a wet gate works until now.
I hope Spielberg had enough clout to prevent us from getting a transfer that's been manipulated excessively, in the typical Universal way. For my money, this is one of his very best films.

Someone on blu-ray.com said in the restoration video that they used the original soundtrack to create the new 7.1 mix and NOT the re-recorded version from the DVD.

Amazon has this up for prebook at $20.99
The press release for JAWS stated that UNIVERSAL has restored (or will be restoring) 13 classic films from their original 35mm prints. JAWS is one of them, and I know TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD was another. Anyone have a list of the other 11? I'd like to collect them all.

From an article earlier this year:
All Quiet on the Western Front, The Birds, Abbott & Costello's Buck Privates, Dracula (1931), the Spanish-language Dracula filmed on the same set at night, Frankenstein, Jaws, Schindler's List, Out of Africa, Pillow Talk, Bride of Frankenstein, The Sting and To Kill a Mockingbird

This seems to be a quote from the restoration feature:
"We didn't consult with Bill Butler [the film's cinematographer]. We left it up to Mr. Spielberg to decide who he wants as his representatives, and he wanted to be involved in this review process and approval himself."

Could have been a choice due to being Spielberg's only BP win and it's his most personal film. He might have strongly suggested it be restored.

Schindler's List is now as old as Star Wars was when they did the Special Editions, which BTW makes me feel old. And, supposedly those films were in bad shape at that point. While I would think that film stocks and how they were preserved advanced by the time of SL, I wouldn't be surprised if it needs some work (although not as much as the others) if they really want to restore it. They're not just doing this for a nice BD transfer, after all.

Since the digibook wasn't mentioned in the official announcement, I wonder if they chose to make it an exclusive. I certainly hope we get this here. This is one film where it truly makes a big difference between the regular packaging and the digibook.

Universal confirmed that "special editions" are coming from "our retail partners."
So it looks like possibly more than one exclusive is in the cards. I'd bet that includes the digibook.

Was just browsing the Jaws thread at blu-ray.com. Someone there contacted Universal about this issue and posted the reply to their email.
