This is one disturbing mind f#˘k of a film. Watch this with Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" if you really want to be in your un-comfort zone! I'm still amazed no studio has seen fit to release it domestically. Oh well, plenty of other avenues if you want to own it. I can't believe we don't see more of the amazing Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire) cast in films. An amazing and sadly underrated actor.

I heard Michael Pitt is a massive prick and hard to work with so maybe he has been blacklisted.

Oh, there's always been a lot of massive pricks in Hollywood. Some of the best actors, writers and directors were massive pricks—as well as some of the worst. However, rumor has it that he was written out of Boardwalk Empire in 2011 and hasn't been seen save for his appearance in "Seven Psychopaths." Perhaps age has matured him because he evidently has several films in the works. I hope so because he is also massively talented.

He was in Rob the Mob. He and what's her face are grating as fuck but Andy Garcia is the best thing out of the film:

That one must've passed under my radar. I never heard of it. But William Harrison's review here at DVDTalk states, "...the film works because Pitt and Arianda pal around like old pros, quickly landing in the audience's good graces despite their characters' frequently questionable decisions. Rob the Mob recalls early Scorsese; Pitt a young Robert De Niro." He goes on in the review, "Pitt and Arianda are quite the duo. Pitt is decidedly less dour here than in Jimmy Darmody's shoes, and Arianda is a ray of sunshine." Wow...I need to pick this one up. I separate the actors from the characters they play—Michael Pitt stole every scene playing Jimmy Darmody during the first two seasons of "Boardwalk Empire" and that's pretty hard to do when you are acting opposite Steve Buscemi. I think he has a screen presence that calls to mind James Dean or Marlon Brando...another "difficult personality" who was also a massive talent. While Andy Garcia is likeable, his problem as an actor is, well, he is always playing Andy Garcia.

After watching WTC on Saturday, I figured I go with a little revenge last night. In spite of the obvious exaggerations, I still find the story compelling and the movie entertaining.

Last night we lightened it up while paying tribute to the late, great Gene Wilder. I've watched "Young Frankenstein" more times than I can count going way back to when I was just a young lad. My parents took me to see it upon release because I was a Universal Monsters fan and had stacks of "Famous Monsters of Filmland." My name was actually printed in issue #117 in the column "You Axed For It!" As I move into my 50's many of my boyhood heroes are passing—the last year has been filled with melancholy. RIP Gene.

Demolition

Gyllenhaal and Watts are two of my favorites and nice to see Chris Cooper in a movie again.

I did not like the kid.

Unfortunately in the last couple years I found out the first 40 - 50 are all about accumulation. Jobs, money, cars, family, everything seems to get better. Once you hit your fifties, it seems like everything is about loss. Financially we are better off than we ever were. The house is paid off and the kids are out of school. But family wise, the entire grandparent generation has been gone for a few years and the parent generation is going fast. We are becoming the new grandparent generation. But dad died, the dog died, mom in the nursing home, kids are off making their way in the world. Money is great but the people to share it with are going or gone. Boyhood heroes from sports like Mohammed Ali to the arts like Wilder are reminders that your youth is gone.

On a lighter note. Young Frankenstein is one of the funniest movies of all time. Wilder was supremely talented and was in hilarious movies. But he was funny in a subtle way. Not like an Eddie Murphy who can make you laugh just from his funny voice. But his facial expressions and his high pitched excitement elevated the mundane to funny and funny to hilarious.

The thing the millennials should take note of was just how funny his movies were without having to resort to toilet humor. Too many of today's movies seem to think if you say Fuck once and it's funny then saying it twenty times is more funny. One fart joke is funny so 10 of them must be uproarious. You know how funny that shit was "would you like to go for a roll in ze hay?", "Nice Knockers." That was some funny shit right there.

Nina

Did not feel I got a good grasp of Nina Simone as a person except for a couple of meltdowns and profanity outbursts.

I suspect we wouldn't admire many artists if we knew them personally....Nina Simone was a talent that far too few have even heard. I need to pick this up because a friend turned me on to her music many years ago and I am thankful for that...that documentary on Netflix will probably be a good watch as well. Tonight, it's a movie, some wine, low lights and Nina Simone. It's a new dawn, It's a new day, It's a new life, For me. And I'm feeling' good.

I really wanted to like this film but sadly it never really satisfies. The characters are so underdeveloped that you really don't feel any empathy for them—even when they get served up as an appetizer. The animators did a far better job executing the marvelous beanstalk scenes than the shockingly fake looking "giants." These one-dimensional behemoths could have been lifted from any number of previous CGI fests. There was absolutely no attempt to bring something new to the table. This was a "paint-by-numbers" flick that could have and should have been far better—and the weak 3D presentation did little to rescue this tale. What the hell happened to Bryan Singer? Perhaps he has spent too much time "partying with his young friends" than honing his craft. What a disappointing mess!

Wow. I first saw it on a shitty VHS dupe almost 25 years ago and I was struck by it then, and I am floored by this blu-ray now. Beyond the remarkable restoration work, this is just a flat out incredible movie. Better than Citizen Kane? Sure, maybe. The sometimes awkward ADR is the only thing holding it back. That, and it helps if you're familiar with Shakespeare, specifically Richard III and Henrys IV & V.
