Hollywood does not make a lot of mob movies anymore. Maybe the last time Depp gave a full effort for a movie.

Great fucking movie. I need to pick this one up as well.

Last ep from

While the big plot twist mid episode was fully expected given Rick's (yet again) inane decision from several eps back, it still was able to satisfy with it's other beats which included a nice requiem for a certain lost character as well as one on their way out.
Was sad to see both of them go, but at least it puts all the players on the field.

Though I can't for the life of me understand why Rick is still looked to as a leader after one disastrous decision after another. Especially when it only seems to get other people killed.

One thing I really enjoyed about this season, was that I watched it in the Spring as opposed to Fall/Winter like I usually do. I think that might have had a subconscious effect on how it played for me.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon...._AC_US218_.jpg

One of my favorite films that I can no longer watch too often. All the dialogue is seared into my brain at this point and, like most of the great movies I grew up with, re-watching is usually a rote experience at this point.

It's been about ten years since I last played this- and that last time was on DVD. The higher resolution here gave me a chance to savor the nuances in the performances and camera work.
Far and away the most satisfying home viewing I can recall. The Bd won't likely impress many people, but I thought it looked spectacular given how problematic its purposefully hazy, sweltering look is to replicate faithfully.
This was exactly how I remembered it looking at the theater in '81.

Still in awe of the run Kasden had , as a youngster no less, from 79/80-81.

I used the English audio since everybody spoke German.

Krueger gave an Oscar worthy performance though it is not a happy or a uplifting movie.

Wim Wenders' Alice in the Cities. Was wowed by this movie. I had put off watching it for quite a while, as I was waiting for the right time to get through the Criterion boxset, but decided on a whim to watch the first movie last night. It was a great call. While I still like Paris, Texas and The American Friend a wee bit more, I thought this falls in place just after them, and ahead of Wings of Desire. The relationship between the lead and the little girl was quite touching, and I enjoyed their travails throughout Amsterdam and Germany...Also have to call out the musical score, which was really perfect for the movie. It was never overwhelming, and would often disappear for several minutes at a time but every time it came back on it was a welcome return...

Watched the Halloween release that came out in that Scream Factory boxset a bit back, just so I could listen to the much newer John Carpenter and Jamie-Lee Curtis commentary. While the original commentary that featured them plus Debra Hill is still superior to the newer one, it is interesting hearing their much more recent thoughts, and it's not a complete retread of the previous commentary...They actually make a decent amount of new points...Kinda makes me wish Carpenter would hook up with Russell again and make a new commentary for The Thing, as the original is my absolute favorite commentary, and I'd love to hear them do it again while kicking back with a couple of cold ones...

Started Three Colors: Red before I drifted off to sleep. It's the last one I need to watch from the Three Colors trilogy...I hope to finish it later on tonight...

Three Colors: Red. While not quite as good as my favorite of the trilogy (Blue), this was really friggin great. I especially loved the ending...Very unexpected but very welcome...The filmmaker really made some great movies at the end of his career...Now I need to finally watch The Dekalog...

Francois Truffaut's The Soft Skin. Not one of his best movies, but that's a pretty high bar so I'd still say this was quite good. Supposedly heavily influenced by Hitchcock (which I somewhat see, but feel that that aspect is a little bit overblown)...Good, troubled relationship movie...Did not see the ending coming, and it was handled very well...I hope Criterion eventually upgrades all of the Antoine Doinel movies to Blu-Ray, as those films remain personal favourites of mine, and I'd like to rewatch them in Hi-Def...

Pregnant single girl moves into a squalid apartment building populated by an assortment of various transgressive characters all struggling with their own issues.
Caron is solid as the unwed mother-to-be, displaying some nice acting chops I didn't realize she had.
Brock Peters is also as affecting as her neighbor.

I appreciated that the ending was suitably matter of fact and slightly more bitter than sweet, while the final fade to black is on an amusingly meta note.

A good film that I'm thinking I will appreciate even more with future reflection.

Wow! Not what I was expecting. Amazing job by Murnau filming in the South Seas with a mostly native cast.

There's a brilliantly minimal use of official documents (receipts, journal entries, proclamations, etc) rather than traditional intertitles (of which there were none) to provide necessary information.

Adding greatly to the experience was the overall remarkable condition of the film elements. Given it's all extremely remote location work, this was truly a surprise.

I'm very eager to see Sunrise now...if I can find where I have it stashed.

Midway through I was thinking "This is a great movie, I wonder why it isn't remembered better along with the other occult/satanism films of the late 60s/early 70's?"

Then a plot turn happened and the way the characters brush it is so plot expedient indifferent that it single handedly makes the film an also ran. It would have been far better to just leave that element out of the film entirely.

I still ultimately enjoyed the film. It's more obvious than something like Rosemary's Baby, but conjures up a nicely subtle sinister vibe that is effective- if you can get over the business in the middle.
Interesting resolution too, if you muse on it. There are more layers there than you see at first glance.

"The Master Minds" from

Hadn't pulled this set out in a while so I wasn't sure where I left off. Ended up watching the same early ep for a second time. Didn't mind at all though. Seeing this show in HD is still a thrill, and satisfying in a way few other HT experiences for me are.

My nephew has met her on several occasions. His partner is an older producer so he's been to get-togethers where he has mingled with several stars. At one point it appeared they were going to be in town for an event and we were going to meet her. Is it OK to tell an old broad that 45 years ago you had one of those special dreams that young boys have when they are starting to grow fur? I didn't think so, but it would still be cool to meet her at some point.

Interesting story about Presidential power and a free press. Felt it was a bit long but a good story none-the-less.

:boring:

A stoned Kirsten Dunst walking in the wood and smoking cigarettes in her underwear. Maybe 4 lines of dialogue in the movie.

If this was a big theatrical release and not a indie it would be worthy of Razzie nominations.

At a family picnic today my sister told us about her trip to NYC last weekend. One night they dined with Glenda Jackson. The second night they dined with Dianna Rigg. They met or saw Tony Goldwyn and Leo DiCaprio but neither were with them. My nephew I guess is going to be Dianna's escort to the TONY's. A couple of the men in addition to myself were discussing Ms. Rigg's beauty back in the day.

I just grabbed an image of Amazon. It was just the standard release I rented from Family Video. Pretty decent extras about the time and events with a minimal amount of ass kissing for Streep and Hanks "Oh she works so hard." "He is so nice, he's just one of the guys."

It was alright and rare you get get a comedy from Hollywood these days since they make only 4 a year.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....lL._SX342_.jpg

It is really cheesy when you compare this to quality of the Comic Book movies that have come out in the 2000's and the special effects are horrible though what do you except from the CGI technology of 1996 or 1997.

Martin Sheen was a bad choice as the villain
