Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part III

Contact looked pretty niceon StarzHD so I have high hopes for the BD.

I wonder if Heat will be held up for the theatrical release of Public Enemies. Cannot frickin' wait for Heat- downtown shootout scene in lossless =

and even though the sound was not lossless, it sounded really good too.

I totally pegged Little Shop 5 days ago:

The alternate ending would rock...but wasn't it shot in B&W? (The question asked was if it was coming and if the ending would be in color)

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part III

^No it wasn't -the big deal was that on the original DVD it was included in black and white without approval and Geffen was pissed because he has the original elements for them to put that sequence together IN COLOUR. He said no one asked him. So if they got the legal stuff sorted, it would be expected they could get it together the way it was meant to be seen.

Ahh ok. I know about the legal problems I just always thought the Alternate Ending was shot in B&W. I'll take a color version instead!

Again, don't get too jazzed on those older WB titles. They have the worst reputation for poor PQ for a reason. Once in a while they come through. But I have not been happy with most of the non-recent films.

The best part of this wasn't even included in the summary:

[Chuck] ... I would like to ask about a few titles from Newline if I might. Would like to find out about the Jason movies that you all have and also TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME...any Blu-Ray plans?

[warnerbros] The Jason movies we have are arriving on BD soon, at least one this year. TWIN PEAKS is not in the cards for the moment......but it will be.
Woo!

I'd love Twin Peaks...but this is Warner, so it may be several years.

2012 is the 20th anniversary of Fire Walk with Me, so you may be right.

CONTACT is coming out on BD this Fall.

2010:
We are DEFINITELY doing a 25th anniversary BD/SD GOONIES special edition next year.
WHERE EAGLES DARE coming to BD next year.
Branagh's HAMLET BD tentatively set for 2010.
THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES will be coming to BLU RAY next year.
THX-1138 is likely to land around the same time

2011:
MALTESE FALCON BD is an obvious choice. Coming for its 70th anniversary in 2011.

No date given:
GREMLINS BD is in the cards. Supplements are still being discussed.
NINJA TURTLES are coming on BD very soon.
We are hopeful we can re-address the LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS issues for BD, but nothing solid yet.....
EXORCIST is currently being remastered for BD by the director Mr. Friedkin AND the cinematographer Mr. Owen Roizman. No date set yet....But it will make your head spin!
HEAT is currently being remastered for BLU RAY under the supervision of Michael Mann. We hope to have it out shortly!
No Hammer [films] for BD yet...but we have hopes for those to come shortly.
Contact is a go for nostalgia's sake. It was one of the first DVD's and I always liked the movie so I'm sure I'll upgrade.

Well, let's hope. "Contact" is a beautifully shot movie. I'll read reviews first, and maybe rent it first as well. Because I've been burned by WB way too many times. "L.A. Confidential" was gorgeous on HBO HD, but the BD PQ is terrible.

Gizmo, are you basically saying ESOTSM is a done deal for, at the very least, a release in the near future? How's your confidence on that 1-10? Based on the studio, do you expect a good release with special features or something potentially not so good?

Thanks.

Canadian releases will typically (or should) follow previous USA plans setup by the studios. Disney (Beuna Vista/Mirimax) is really letting down US buyers. But yeah, the release for Eternal looks like it might stick (for sometime in June). As it stands, expect a flood of HD DVD ports from Uni starting around the same time. Scale would be an 8. But Universal changes its mind so damn often its hard to peg them for anything that not a direct tie-in (Pitch Black/Riddick, Fast and Furious as an example). Random titles are just that - random. But you noticed Bruce Almighty got announced? Another Jim Carrey flick may appear as well.

I could be mistaken but aren't the HD TV movies usually just upconverted DVD's as opposed to complete new transfers?

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part III

I was just wondering the other day when we might see Gladiator or Forrest Gump on Blu. I also thought about South Park on Blu, but wasn't holding my breath. This is indeed, excellent news. And Braveheart? Man. Way to release a good portion of my favorite movies this year!
