Sony certainly doesn't have any incentive to go about lowering the prices on their players at this point.
I'm not so sure about that, they still have to try displace SD DVD as the standard and they aren't going to do that with $400 to $500 players and $35 to $40 movies. The average Joe just isn't going to buy in at those prices.

I enjoy both of them but this really couldn't go on forever.
What would have happened had Fox and Warner gone HD DVD exclusive? Would you and others still be singing the same tune.

Again, as I stated, while I leaned Red, looking at my collection its pretty obvious I was in fact format neutral as much as possible. While I would have rather seen HD DVD win, its still OK that Blu-ray pulled ahead. I just fear the future of unknown pricing and profile mess that is going to happen.

Wow, this stupid format war may actually be resolved sooner than the SIRIUS/XM merger!

There is no guarantee that HD-Dvd and its proprietors wouldn't have raised the stakes on greed had they won out. Their lack of software deals have shown that they didn't really want to break on the price point nearly as much as Blu-Ray and its supporting studios did. Had they won I would have just continued to buy HDM media on HD-Dvd and hoped that my A-30 would have continued to be able to handle the somewhat shady playback reliability of HD-Dvd.

Woah...the shit is hitting the fan on many places. I really feel bad for people that were REALLY Pro-HD DVD.

Some fun rumors....
Paramount is pissed about this and wants out of their contract.
Toshiba has canceled their CES event (confirmed) because Warner was ready to announce HD DVD exclusive TODAY, but change at the last hour. Literally.

This is going to be a pretty exciting weekend!

This is from the Digital Bits:

And our sources are now telling us that Universal - knowing Warner was about to go Blu-exclusive - has already begin taking steps to prepare for their own future Blu-ray efforts. Our guess is that Universal in particular will go format neutral, to put the best P.R. spin on their situation. But we'd be VERY surprised if all three studios don't announce their own Blu-ray Disc support by mid-2008 at the latest, so as benefit from 4th quarter holiday sales. In fact, we're betting those announcements happen much sooner.

See that sounds fishy. How would Universal have a feeling and knew about WB's impending jump when by ALL accounts, it was QUITE sudden.

Looks like the fire sale is starting already, checked Amazon.com and saw the following

Deer Hunter $7.99
Blood Diamond $9.99
Hot Fuzz $12.99
Knocked Up $12.99

Don't remember seeing those titles that cheap before

I wouldn't put too much faith in Bill though. Universal/Paramount/Toshiba need to do this right however. Incentives of some kind. $100 rebate on Blu-ray player by providing them your HD DVD player serial number? SOMETHING!

This is a good reason to NOT sell your HD-Dvd equipment and buy away. Eventually there will be a cheap enough dual player that can play both formats so I'm not too worried and will buy accordingly.

Honestly, I would LOVE IT if Toshiba did SOMEHOW send a firmware to accept BluRay. Like I said earlier....someone's gotta find a hack....unless there is a HUGE difference between the two formats.

IIRC, its simply not possible.
However, I hope an incentive plan starts to get people over to Blu.

Nothing is impossible.

The sad thing really is, the loss of Region Free.

Considering all of these studios have been playing games all along, it would be nice if they got together at CES to end the war formally, and stop jerking consumers around.

OTOH, I see a lot of problems coming from that Paramount/Toshiba deal that prolongs this even further.
