BD has never been about co-existing. They want you to buy BD, replace your HD-DVDs with BD, and pretend like HD-DVD never existed.

Not to say that HD-DVD wouldn't have done the same if it had won.

What if Toshiba or Microsoft upped their offer and that unnamed studio (Disney or Fox) decides to switch sides after declining to do so? WOOHOO, war again.

Bill Hunt predicts Dreamworks/Paramount & Universal to go Blu by mid-2008.
Link
Of course, there's already finger-pointing in some quarters, including comments that "large sums of money were obviously involved" to get Warner to switch. If anyone thinks payoffs were the sole reason for Warner's decision, they don't know as much about this business as they'd like to think. It's well worth nothing that BOTH camps these past few weeks were offering extraordinary up-front payments and other incentives to Warner to go exclusive to their format - sums that make the Paramount/DreamWorks deal to go HD-DVD exclusive look like unsalted peanuts. Warner clearly took the deal that offered them not just short-term gain, but also the best potential long-term benefit as well.

You can bet that Universal, Paramount and DreamWorks aren't going to want to be left holding the bag. Now that the industry momentum towards Blu-ray is clear, sales of Blu-ray hardware and software are surely going to increase, and none of these studios are going to want to be left out. Their shareholders simply won't allow it. Paramount and DreamWorks almost certainly have have out-clauses in their deals with the HD-DVD camp. Steven Spielberg has repeatedly made his desire to move DreamWorks back to Universal clear, and he's also a committed Blu-ray Disc backer - Universal going Blu is almost certainly going to be a sticking point in the negotiations, especially when you consider that Spielberg has TWICE now required the HD-DVD camp to retract statements claiming that his Universal films were coming soon to that format. And our sources are now telling us that Universal - knowing Warner was about to go Blu-exclusive - has already begin taking steps to prepare for their own future Blu-ray efforts. Our guess is that Universal in particular will go format neutral, to put the best P.R. spin on their situation. But we'd be VERY surprised if all three studios don't announce their own Blu-ray Disc support by mid-2008 at the latest, so as benefit from 4th quarter holiday sales. In fact, we're betting those announcements happen much sooner.

Wow...You go away from the computer for a day or two and the whole HD world explodes!!!!!! Did not see this coming... holy shit. I'm glad I've got my PS3!!!!!!! Now I don't know how to break the news to my friend who just got an A3 for Xmas and bought $200 worth of HD DVD's...

I'll probably try and start selling off my HD DVD's that are dual format and go blu on them... wonder what Uni and Paramount are going to be doing...because I know I'll be heavily slowing all of my HD DVD purchases... glad I got the Harry Potters in the amazon Blu bogo!!! (wasn't quick enough on the draw to get the hd dvd versions).

WOW, just WOW.

True, but they haven't stopped other CE companies from making combo players so I see no reason why they would refuse Toshiba's licensing money.

Of course -- higher profits were one of the driving forces behind HDM.

I would imagine that ship has sailed. With WB on the side of BD there is now little reason to risk siding with HD DVD. Cash or no cash.

how many BD production lines are there? I'm guessing they need to make more as it looks like there will be alot of extra discs made this year.

But if certain companies think HD DVD fans are going to instantly turn Blu-ray, it isn't going to happen (I could be wrong). I'm holding for an HD DVD sale, and sittin' tight thereafter. I think many others are tired of the movie studies fucking around, and we're gonna be more conservative.

CES HD DVD Event canceled due to Warner announcement

I just received an email from the HD DVD Promotion Group stating that the CES 2008 HD DVD press event has been canceled. The recent Blu-ray exclusive announcement from Warner is cited as the reason for the event being canceled. You can find the full text of the notice below.

Notice of CES Press Conference Cancellation by North American HD DVD Promotion Group

“Based on the timing of the Warner Home Video announcement today, we have decided to postpone our CES 2008 press conference scheduled for Sunday, January 6th at 8:30 p.m. in the Wynn Hotel. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We are currently discussing the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluating next steps. We believe the consumer continues to benefit from HD DVD’s commitment to quality and affordability – a bar that is critical for the mainstream success of any format.

We’ll continue to keep you updated on new developments around HD DVD.”

But had it went the other way you would be high-fiving and popping champagne. Why the gloom and doom outlook because Blu-Ray "won"?

So the BDA paid off Fox to stay Blu-ray exclusive and Warner took money as well. Nice.
I'm sure Disney and Lionsgate is thrilled to be the ones left standing with no extra pay while everyone else gets it. The BDA better pony up cash for them otherwise we might see some more switches on out hand.

And why should they be about coexisting?

Proof of the payout? Ever consider that these studios may just believe that Blu-Ray was the better way to go? I always felt you leaned towards HD-Dvd but never understood why.

What's going to happen? BDA offering them money to dump HD DVD and go Blu? Make dual format players at a reasonable price? If Universal and PW/DW abandon HD DVD, you will hear some pretty nasty reactions to the close to a million people who bought the players, with a good chunk the past few months. They better be working on some sort of "incentive plan" to move those people over, otherwise they must just say F you altogether to HDM.

Did you read my post on the last page that David Vaughn made? Toshiba had a deal with Warners, but they needed another studio to go with them. Once the BD studio backed out (Disney/Fox), then WB went Blu only.

I'm not gloomy. I'm just saying, you guys don't know Sony. I don't know how old some of you are, but I've been around to see Sony do a few numbers on consumers with proprietary technology.

If Sony doesn't behave this way, then I will affirmatively take my statements back and say Sony has changed for good. But for now, I don't think this is a time for anyone to celebrate other than blowout prices for HD DVDs.

Reminds me of my Laserdisc days at BB, when I picked them up for $10 a pop and they became collectibles avid collectors, and I made a shitload of money.

You'll see proof pretty soon. Various insiders are already confirming it. Fox was going to go Neutral, but bailed at the last moment by a check from the BDA. Warner followed.

Oh well. This sucks as now Sony control all HDM, and we will soon be enjoying $40 MSRP movies, no BOGOs and Profile 1.1 players. Ugh.

If Fox was in talks with HD DVD, I don't understand why they disappeared for 5 months over BD+ if they thought they might release on a format without it.

I mean seriously, for the many that got players for $99 or less, why bitch?

I sold my first HD player expecting Blu to win...but for $79 dollars, I figured it was chump change so I bought in until someone won. No loss. Great player regardless. Looking forward to Blu hopefully giving us some respectable prices on some players.

Also, regarding the Matrix on BD...still looks like a long way off according to the WB executive.
