Why shouldn't they piss on them? Beta owners got screwed too!

I don't really give a shit, so whatever. These studios don't give a rats ass about the consumer, all they care about is $$$$$$$. For me its all about the movies, whether it be blue or red. I have 30 or so red, and 35 or so blue they aren't going anywhere, neither is my red player. I also won't be replacing my red movies with blue.

By the time I get around to replacing them it would've been time for the next technology anyway (at least in terms of the player, an A3), so no big deal to me.
Real talk.

This is different.

DVD is mainstream. HDM is not. HDM wants to replace DVD.

What was VHS/Beta going to replace?

I REALLY think we will see some sort of incentive plan in the future of some sort.

So...is this going to be the fastest growing thread in DVD Talk history (besides the 9/11 attacks)?

I think many people are assuming other companies are as considerate as Apple (when they offered rebates for iPhone users).

You know Warner won't do anything for HD-DVD...they showed this by waiting on this announcment until AFTER Xmas.

I dunno, but I do have Dune, so it is a blind buy.

Think about it, what titles WON'T be re-released on Blu from Uni and Paramount (when they supposedly change over?)

NOW WE FINALLY all know why WB shipped all those HD DVD titles to people over the last month for cancelled orders! We need to update the Bargains Forum.

I read Apple might release an Apple TV with Blu Ray player included.

Good question. Personally, I'm not rebuying anything I have on HD-dvd, save maybe the TV sets when they hit rock bottom prices.

Of course. However, still looking at this, this could be a great PR move for the BDA and/or HD DVD group. $100 coupon for a Blu-ray player would help sell players...plan and simply.

I just listed my extra A3 on CL. I'll keep the XA1 around forever and ever.

Wow...I'd be down. I love my Apple TV (its hacked, however to run multiple codecs). I'd be DOWN for this if its sub $400.

Bill Hunt has studio contacts. He's been posting their press releases for new titles for years.

It'd be a nice gesture for Warner to offer some sort of exchange program.

I wouldn't be shocked for Toshiba to strike a deal with Sony. HD DVD owners could get a trade in discount for Blu-ray players. How many HD DVD discs total have been sold? The studios could sponsor a widespread trade-in program. All hypothetical and unlikely, but maybe just maybe there's a small chance it'll happen.

Things were looking a whole lot different as early as a week ago:

So don't think they were waiting on this announcement.

I don't expect to see very many "discs" exchanges going on. Last I heard HD DVD had 2.5 Million sold and Blu-ray 4 Million. That's a bit too much. Players...sure (in the form of a discount coupon).

There's no way I'd trade in my HD DVD player for a Sony player. I'll wait until BD players get under $200, and are less prone to issues I've never experienced but have read about.

When HD DVD fully dies out for Tosh...

Tosh will probably start making Blu ray players ( Sony made VCR's, why wouldn't tosh make BR?) if that is the case, they would probably make them able to play HD DVD.

Stop the comparison to the VCR/BETA machines, This would be as simple as adding another laser. The VCR/BETA machines were totally different physical formats. It would be very easy for someone ( it's already being done) to create a player that can play both. If anyone decides to do this once BR has officaly won, Tosh would probably be it.

Looks like the zit-faced, bloated nerd gamers won.

Now what happens when they release the Mega HD that has amazing clarity superior to Blue Ray....hahahaha

But they need to get players in houses and media sold. That's why you lower prices. They can have all the studio support in the world, but without players in houses, it's all for naught.
I strongly disagree. If and when HD DVD does go away, with no competing format, they can go back to the business model of soaking early adopters for as much as they can. There's still a good number of people on the sidelines who are willing to pay high prices as long as there is only one format. Once that sales curve starts to flatten then we'll see a price drop and the cycle repeats. I guess time will tell which way things will go.
