That BOGO is for this Nielsen week (Tue through next Mon), not last week.

I have no problem with saying blu-ray has BOGO's frequently. But it's not "every week". Every other week? Maybe . Every week HD DVD has a blockbuster release, surely

Its a BOGO, it counts. Sorry dude. They have plenty of stores, this is not a mom and pop store. Its also been going on since Friday so it counts for last weeks Nielsens too. Bummer.

Not really.

As of May 2007, Fry's Electronics operates brick-and-mortar stores in nine U.S. states: California (17 stores); Texas (8); Arizona (2); Georgia (2); Illinois (1); Indiana (1); Nevada (1); Oregon (1); and Washington (1).

Just over 30 stores nation-wide. They certainly have plenty of stores in CA and TX, but the other 48 states get zero love, including major metropolitan areas on the east coast.

That's what I want to do with the unopened discs I got from Amazon free with the A3. I don't want to use Ebay or anything else selling them directly to individuals.

Thanks to overscanning or slight reformatting, a 1.85:1 film will generally fill the entire TV screen. A scope film will still have the black bars to preserve a ratio wider than the TV's.
Thanks Supermallet and others for the information. To be more fair to me this was only the second Blu-Ray movie I had watched on the PS3 and the other one did not have any bars. I am used to seeing the bars on regular DVD's on my tv but I thought that maybe with Blu-Ray they got rid of the bars. I should have known they try to keep the original aspect ratio of the films and have bars when needed.

I was also moved more to this thinking because all of the HD content I watch on cable fills up the full screen and shows no bars. Even the movies on TNTHD, Universal HD, and the movie channels. I should have known they "fix" the movie to fill up the screen and not go by the real aspect ratio. Thanks guys for all the help. I will try to do better in the future.

I couldn't resist. I had the new Pirate's in my Gold Box at 35% off plus the extra 10% and also picked up Superman II and Dog Day Afternoon. Once again they gave 10% off on the free movie so that saved an extra $2.

All 3 for $36.31.

In its new announcement, the BDA fights fire with fire, counting both standalone Blu-ray players and the Playstation 3 to come up with a staggering 2.7 million units sold through Black Friday.
About 2.6m of those are PS3s.

What difference does it make? They can play Blu-Ray movies so who cares? Besides, most of us on here know that the PS3 is the best option when it comes to a Blu-Ray player.

Because they're not all bought as BD players. It's a convenient number inflater for Sony.

It is just a note, not a threadcrap or anything along those lines, it's an honest note of curiosity for those wondering how many people paid more than the cost of a PS3 for a dedicated video player.

It does inflate the number of Blu-Ray players sold but then the only line that really matters is how much software is sold. Some people claim that the PS3 sales are used to boost the Blu-Ray numbers and then some of those same people as well as some others say that only 20% of PS3 owners actually use it for Blu-Ray. People try to use both of these as negatives against the PS3. Personally I am glad that the PS3 can perform more than one major function in regards to my entertainment setup. Easy to turn on, easy to update and no problems with playback.

personally, i would prefer that player sales reports for both formats provide totals as well as a complete breakdown, such as this:

Blu-ray
-------
# of PS3s
# of Blu-ray PC drives
# of Standalone Blu-ray players

HD DVD
-------
# of XBox360 Add-ons
# of HD DVD PC Drives
# of Standalone HD DVD players

That way everyone could look at the numbers and draw their own conclusions. Of course, that would be terrible marketing for both sides.

Problem is, the BDA just screwed itself in the numbers game.

If they have more then 3 times the amount of players available (as they are now counting the PS3), shouldn't they be winning by 3 times the amount of software every week just to "break even" with what HD DVD is doing? It should be 75:25 every week just for the ratio of software to players to remain the same. While that almost happened last week, its never happened before. Its typically 60/40 on average.

I don't have the latest numbers, but Blu-ray software has not outsold HD DVD software 2:1. Its something like 1.85:1. With 3 times the amount of players on the market...shouldn't they be higher? What about the BDA's comment about the $99 A2 Firesale? They are selling 95% of there Blu-ray players (PS3) at a much bigger loss every day (and 3 times as much apparently) and having weekly BOGOs to achieve the higher the normal Nielsen numbers.

I really enjoy these little PR Battles. The Big Question: Does the general public actually read and believe the crap that the BDA and HD DVD group puke up?

They should have included a function on the PS3 that reports back to the mothership if a PS3 has been used for Blu-Ray movie playback.

You don't think it's in there? Man -- they know what kind of cereal you ate for breakfast this morning and all the times you pick your nose when you thought that nobody was lookin'! Not to mention how much wood a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck etc., etc.

I'd bet they believe it if they read it, but I don't think most people care enough to seek out this sort of information. I'd say the general response to these formats is either indifference or outright anger (the latter mostly coming from those who don't like feeling as if they're now settling for second best by supporting DVD).
