I think we've got a new record for subtitles with 23!

The title is accurate because this thread encompasses HD DVD and Blu-ray releases from 2007 and 2008. When we start a new thread after this one closes, we can title it something else.

1.Don't be a smartass, it's not working for you.

2.You know I meant why do you personally care. Is HD DVD in the title some personal affront to you?

personal attacks/namecalling is frowned upon at DVD Talk.

Since the fact that the creator of HD DVD, Toshiba, is no longer supporting the format, there is no need to have a HD DVD announcement thread.

Honestly, I'm still wondering why you didn't just ignore my question about the thread title. I guess we have some members looking for "motives" regarding certain posts?

Have you only supported HD DVD? Just curious.

Technically speaking, that posting wasn't really name-calling. That is, if the poster had stated "you're a such-and-such". Rather, it seemed more of an admonition against behavior akin to a such-and-such. A matter of semantics, perhaps, and I certainly can't speak for the poster: perhaps the intent was to call you a such-and-such. If that was the case, however, then technically, they failed.

I do believe the poster's original point, however, was valid. There are still HD DVD releases being announced and produced. To change the title of this column at the present time would therefore be premature at the very least.

Since there are only what, 4 more WB titles coming to HD DVD, I though that there was no need to include HD DVD in the announcements thread. Universal and Paramount are done making announcements. Now that Toshiba has pulled the plug, who knows if WB will even release what they have announced on HD DVD.

PixyJunket 03-07-08 12:00 PM

Why does it bother you so much?

:) You want to know my motivation for the post, right? What I was experiencing when I posted? Well, you ain't finding out. It's gonna remain a mystery.

Warner Bros. has stated that they still intend to release on HD DVD through May, just as they'd originally announced. In fact, yesterday's announcement for "P.S. I Love You" includes an HD DVD release. Also, there are still other minor studios announcing and releasing on the HD DVD format, with no end in sight.

C'mon... Really? Let's see minor studios still releasing HD DVD's

Image... Wait no, they cancelled all pending HD DVD's.
Navarre... Last stuff scheduled for March 18th.
DVD International... Digital Video Essential: HD Basics March 25th. They have a proven track record of constantly delaying discs. Once this is delayed, they're gone.
Vanguard Cinema... Who? Last release April 22nd. Good luck with that.
BCI... Last release, March 25th. For a track record see DVD International.
First Look... See BCI.
SPV Records... See Vanguard Cinema.
Bandai Visual... Freedom 5, 6 & 7 are their last HD DVD's and only will be available via direct on-line orders.

Outside of the pending WB titles, the end is in sight, basically it is March 25th.

This is the final word on the title of the thread. This thread has been derailed enough by something so inconsequential, and further posts on this subject are off-topic and will be deleted.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see the inaccuracy in my previous post. Not every studio has announced an end to HD DVD support. Weinstein, for example, hasn't made any such announcement. Is it likely that they'll ever release another HD DVD? No, but, as you've helped to point out, there are still other studios that will.

The point is that there is still at least one major studio (Warner Bros.) who -- as of right now, anyway -- still intends to release on HD DVD through the month of May, and there are other smaller studios which have announced releases for the coming months. To retitle this thread at the present time would be a disingenuous and misleading act.

Whoops -- didn't see this in time. My apologies.

namja 03-07-08 01:12 PM

MOD NOTE:

A sarcastic/snarky remark like "Did you not hear the news that HD DVD is no longer a supported format? It's all over the net." will earn you a response like "Don't be a smartass, it's not working for you."

Anyway, please continue HD DVD & Blu-ray release announcements in this thread. Until there are no more HD DVD releases, we will continue with the current title.

edit: While I was away from the computer (mid posting), Adam gave an answer. At least you guys know we're in sync.

I know those covers are usually temporary, but they're so cringe-worthy.

I hope they're not actually going to have "Blu-ray Disc" and "1080p HIGH DEFINITION" in those huge letters.

True_Story1011 03-08-08 10:11 AM

I was thinking the samething, I hope those are only slipcases if they are staying like that.

Gizmo 03-08-08 11:14 AM

Its just temp. artwork...we've seen it before. I'm sure it will look just like a normal Blu-ray movie, maybe with a slipcase like POTC.

argh923 03-09-08 10:46 AM

If it's temp artwork...why even post it? Seems pointless.

PopcornTreeCt 03-09-08 12:14 PM

The artwork is going to be the same. The only thing different will be the banners or font.

bunkaroo 03-09-08 03:06 PM

Disney/BV has been doing the temp artwork for DVD and Blu-Ray for a while now. I don't know what their reasoning is, but I can remember back to when they released the extended editions for Con Air, Crimson Tide and Enemy Of The State on DVD, and they has these stupid generic font covers listed everywhere.
