HD DVD & Blu-ray Release Announcements 2007-2008

Here's the continuation of the New Announcements thread sans the Calendar, as that doesn't seem to be updated anymore.

For fairly comprehensive and up-to-date release date calendars, hidefdigest seems to have pretty decent ones for your perusal:

Blu-Ray

HD-DVD

Listed at DVDEmpire today:

Cast Away (Blu-Ray) 12/4
Independence Day (Blu-Ray) 12/4
Underdog (Blu-Ray) 12/18
License to Wed (Blu-Ray & HD-DVD) 10/30
Hot Rod (HD-DVD) 11/27

oh my god! I just peed a little in my pants.

I love that the cover says "From the director of Blade II and Hellboy." :)

DVDTown has posted specs for the BD of Independence Day:

* Widescreen Theatrical Feature
* Scene Specific Commentary by Director Roland Emerich and Producer Dean Devlin
* Commentary by Oscar-Winning FX supervisors Volker Engel and Doug Smith
* Trivia Track
* Search Content
* Personal Scene Selections
* Alien Scavenger Hunt (Java Game)
* D-Box
* Second Session
* Theatrical Teaser
* 3 Theatrical Trailers

Sounds like Fox dropping the second disc from a two-disc set again...and no seamless branching for the extended cut? Unfortunate.

cartman 10-04-07 05:41 PM

With that ID4 information, my list of Fox BD's to purchase drops to zero :(. I probably would have caved and still bought it if it had the extended cut. Maybe I can score the few I wanted off of eBay for decent prices a little way down the line.

lizard 10-08-07 11:34 AM

Columbia House has listed Superbad - Blu-ray for 12/4/07, which confirms the information in matome's highdefdigest link above. And — perhaps because it is a two disc set — the list price is a stunning $43.95!

It would appear that Sony wants to give Fox some competition for "most overpriced titles".

I thought prices for BDs would be coming down a bit by now. Guess not. Instead they are going up.

Mr. Cinema 10-09-07 11:12 AM

Per Kocheese99 on AVS:

My distributor is showing the US versions of Con Air and The Rock coming to Blu-Ray on 01/08/08 with MSRP for each being $29.99.

That's one shitty price. Even with Amazon's usual 30% discount on top of my 10% promo discount, I'd still have to pay 27.69. I haven't seen the film so this may be a rental for me.

lizard 10-09-07 01:14 PM

^I wonder if this means that the list price for the coming Lawrence of Arabia BD will be $50+?

Dragon Ball Z: Broly Double Feature (Blu-Ray) 11/13/07

I'm really glad I never bought Pan's Labyrinth on DVD. That'll be a great film to watch in HD. I'll most-likely end up getting the Blu-ray over the HD-DVD, though. Thanks for the news.

PopcornTreeCt 10-13-07 09:26 PM

According to blu-ray.com:

Shoot 'Em Up - 01/01/08
New Line Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti action film 'Shoot 'Em Up' to Blu-ray on January 1st. Extras will include a commentary track, deleted scenes, and the documentary "Ballet of Bullets: Making 'Shoot 'Em Up'".

I'm hoping that LOA will be on one disc, at least the movie. They could probably fit the DVD's documentary on there as well, so unless they have new supplements there may be no need for a second disc. (Of course, I do hope there are more extras.)

Even if it is 2 discs, it's a catalog title so it should be cheaper than Superbad.

Well, it's good to see The Pianist get released so importing won't be necessary from then on.

bunkaroo 10-15-07 06:46 PM

Everyone should thank me for finally buying the import, as that's clearly why they've announced this now. :D

PopcornTreeCt 10-15-07 07:02 PM

I recently bought the import too.

Life of Brian was delayed again?!

bunkaroo 10-17-07 10:29 AM

Whew. Nice to see Life Of Brian just got bumped back about 6 weeks. The HDD article didn't mention a new date. Couldn't care less about I Know Who Made A Shitty Movie.

I wonder if Sony will do a Resident Evil box on 1/1.

matome 10-18-07 08:53 AM

The Rock (Blu-Ray) 1/8
(this, Con-Air and Crimson Tide are already available on region-free Blu-Ray in the UK if you are impatient. I have a feeling the other two U.S. version will show up on 1/8 as well.)

Kocheese posted on AVS a week or two ago that The Rock and Con Air were arriving on 1/8. I hope Crimson Tide shows up. And with Armageddon having its 10th anniversary next year, I really hope Disney finally releases that on BD.

Shannon Nutt 10-18-07 09:17 AM

This has been posted in an appropriate thread, but thought I would mention it here as well:

Paramount has recalled The Jack Ryan Collection, and it won't be released on 10/23. The extras listed on the packaging were not on the HD DVDs.

No word yet on if this recall is simply to fix the packinging or actually re-press the HD DVDs with the missing material.

A future release date has not yet been announced.

Looks like Crimson Tide will be following these two in February. HDD just added the Con-Air BD on 1/8 info:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...in_Flight/1082

Disney has apparently made a New Year's resolution to reschedule all of its previously-delayed Blu-ray action titles, issuing a January 8, 2008 release date for 'Con Air.'

As we reported earlier this morning, 'Con Air' was one of a trio of action titles (alongside 'The Rock' and 'Crimson Tide') that were originally scheduled for release this past June, only to be post 613]subsequently yanked[/post] from the studio's schedule with no new dates in the offing.

ADVERTISEMENT

Now, after weeks of rumors, the studio has confirmed that 'Con Air' will be among its first 2008 Blu-ray titles, hitting store shelves on January 8, the same date as 'The Rock.' (Note that the studio has yet to confirm a date for the third title in the trio, 'Crimson Tide,' but it's currently expected sometime in February).

A full press release with complete details for 'Con Air' is due shortly, but Disney did tell us that the disc will include the studio's usual 1080p video and an uncompressed PCM 5.1 Surround track (at 48kHz/24-bit).

There are no supplemental details available yet, but we'll certainly keep you posted.

Retail for the Blu-ray will list for $29.99.

matome 10-18-07 10:19 AM

The Shoot 'Em Up discs will have exclusive content for both versions. Looks like the BD is also the first 7.1 DTS-HD-MA disc.

I thought some animated superheroes movie/Bluray disc had that honour, or was that Dolby Digital 7.1 ?

A number of Lionsgate discs have, but they were PCM rather than DTS HD MA.
