Why post it? Well, it's on sites like Amazon because some people are still such boneheads that they wind up accidentally ordering the Blu-ray discs when they just meant to get the standard def disc. So they have to have stuff like this spelled out for them.

argh923 03-09-08 11:04 PM

No...I mean, why post it in these threads? I get the whole bonehead argument for those sites...we obviously no better.

"no better"? Apparently not. :p

Not one of the catalog titles from Sony that many of us are wanting but looks like Anger Management will drop on 5/20:

It's not temporary at all. Disney is putting out all of their blu-rays like that. They are trying introduce the customers to the brand new format that way, with the huge lettering. Sort of like 'family friendly'. Crappy looking I know. :(

I call conspiracy. The studios are just trying to ruin the packaging so badly that nobody will mind when/if things move to downloads only. ;)

It is temporary art work... Maybe they're using it for advertising, but the actual releases are not designed that way. Enchanted initial artwork had the same ugly design, and it normal like all of Disney's other releases.

Score.

It looks like the new version will definitely carry over all the supplements from the two-disc DVD release then, based off of the details listed at the link.

Overpar 03-11-08 03:21 PM

Contrary to some reports I've seen at Highdefdigest.com of a June release, Discovery Channel's "Fearless Planet" is already available at Discovery Channel's online store. I just got mine delivered yesterday.

Coming May 5th is the series "Human Body: Pushing the Limits" on Blu-ray.

Artwork released (and updated) just this month

As for the National Treasure: Book of Secrets, same goes for this, if the artwork was 'temporary' the standard DVD would be different looking also (compared to it's official release). It's not.

Mr. Cinema 03-12-08 07:21 AM

Guess what? Dan in Real Life's cover at Amazon uses the above style with HUGE LETTERING. I bought it at Best Buy yesterday....it doesn't use the above style. Those are P-R-O-M-O-T-I-O-N-A-L covers.

That cover for the first one is badass. I LOVE the original art from the DVD and poster, but this is a blunt, straight-up piece of greatness.

Definitely grabbing the box set.

bunkaroo 03-12-08 08:44 AM

OK - I'll say it - I'm not too keen on these book packages at all. Plus I hate having to slide discs out of a sleeve, which is what it looks like these have.

Get ready, Warner is releasing 10 book-style movies this year, including movies already released!

Adding a collectible spin to high-def packaging, Warner has revealed plans to release ten Blu-ray titles in "book"-like editions in the coming year.

Home Media Magazine is reporting that with Warner's March 25 Blu-ray debut of 'Bonnie & Clyde,' the studio will kick off a new line of deluxe next-gen releases geared towards the collector's market. Sure to please film buffs, the slate of ten releases will wrap the high-def picture and sound in a handsomely bound volume containing rare and never-before-seen archival material.

As previously reported details for 'Bonnie & Clyde' illustrate, the "book" houses the Blu-ray disc, and opens up to a full-color booklet with additional photographs, production notes, and vintage press kit excerpts.

Future titles earmarked by the studio to receive the "book" treatment include 'Dirty Harry' (due June 3), as well as the as-yet-unscheduled 'Woodstock,' 'Gone with the Wind,' and 'North by Northwest.'

Warner says it's also planning to re-issue some previously-released Blu-rays in "book" editions, including 'Blade Runner' and selections from the 'Harry Potter' series (dates TBA).

Note that as 'Bonnie & Clyde' is due before Warner's May HD DVD transition cut-off, the studio will release an HD DVD version of the title in the same book-style configuration on April 15, three weeks after the Blu-ray. However, all subsequent "book"-style releases from the studio will be Blu-ray only.
So I guess my $70 Ultimate Briefcase Edition Blade Runner is not really Ultimate. Harry Potter Boxset? Nope, now we got book editions coming out! Sorry Warner, no way in hell am I double dipping.

The covers could be for the stupid people who choose to blindly order from Amazon (as they are the only place that used that cover art/case style) and then get pissed when a Blu-ray movie shows up that they can't play in their $45 DVD player. This way its a bit more noticable that its a Blu-ray movie. You would think the price difference would trip people up, but apparently not. Oddly enough this tactic is only used by Disney/Buena Vista.

I just saw that. I don't like how they're not making these optional, for those of us who don't want to pay an extra $5 for non-standard packaging. I guess the idea is that since these movies don't sell well, they might as well get more money out of those who do buy them.

That's why I hated those Book of the Dead dvd versions from Anchor Bay. They had a plastic sleeve for the disc, which would get scratched each time I removed it. It would be nice if these had a normal hub to snap into at the last part of the book.

Shannon Nutt 03-12-08 11:16 AM

Responding to a few posts above:

First of all the Warner "book" titles have a hard clear plastic holder for the discs (attached to the opposite side of the back cover)...got my Bonnie & Clyde screener, and I'm assuming future releases are the same. So no sleeve worries.

Secondly, I got my copy of Enchanted and the Blu-ray artwork is definitely the FIRST of the above, not the second (with the big Blu-ray and 1080p strips).
