My guess is whoever released the R2 version went to the trouble of licensing the extras from Criterion. Either Universal didn't bother or wasn't able to. I'll just hang onto the LD until Criterion jumps on the HD bandwagon.

The most important thing though is we're finally getting an anamorphic transfer for The Game. And in HD to boot. The only downside is the lack of lossless audio.

Universal released it. They have the worldwide rights, if I'm not mistaken.

I'll get The Game and I am beyond stunned that universal is bringing The Jerk to HD. It's one of my favourite movies of ALL TIME, so you can bet your ass I'll be buying that!

Agreed. I'll gladly get them both, but The Jerk is the one with very very high re-watch value to me. Now if only Warners would give me PeeWee's Big Adventure so I can free up space on my DVR.

Now then... we have a quick Fox update for you today. Amazon has a Borat Blu-ray Disc listed for release on 3/6. Fox tells me that's an error - there's no Blu-ray version set to be released yet. Just FYI.

Also, while we're talking Buena Vista, industry and retail sources tell us to expect the Blu-ray Disc release of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on 5/22, with Disney and Pixar's Cars following on 6/5.

Ok, so Sony Releases Big Fish with a $28.95 price point and a commentary and we get the typical Blu Ray bashing about extras and value. Universal releases The Jerk and The Game at $34.95 and $29.95 with only trailers and some lost footage on The Jerk and it gets mostly ignored by the same people who always love to point out how awful BD is. Very hypocritcal, esspecially considering that more and more of Universal catalog releases are starting to look like this since the disappointing release of King Kong. I'm not the biggest extras guy, but when a movie comes out that I really like and is completely bare bones (Silence of the Lambs, Rocky) it is very frustrating and I won't buy those releases. So I agree with many of the comments that MGM and Fox need to step up, but so does Universal. With only 7 movies on the books for the first 5 months of the year and the dramatic decline in the effort put into their releases, you have to start to question their support of HD DVD.

While I won't argue that The Game and The Jerk should have more special features, the original DVD release of those discs have no more features than the HD DVD. This is a different situation from Kong, which purposely removed features. As far as I know, Kong is the only Universal HD DVD to do that. Big Fish removes features from the regular DVD, a deplorable practice far more prevalent on BD than HD DVD. Should The Game and The Jerk be $19.99 MSRP? Yes, they should. Hell, for what they offer they should be $14.99 MSRP. But to suggest that people on this forum are willfully ignoring this issue in some sort of pro-HD, anti-BD fervor is absurd, when many people here have complained about the lack of features on The Game when the features exist in every other region.

Your closing comments are about par for the course with you, taking care to bash HD while making small swipes at easy BD targets to make it look as if you're being unbiased. Am I going to look at barebones discs from Universal that were barebones on regular DVD and cry foul when Fox is routinely releasing barebones versions of films that have special editions on DVD? No. If Universal beings to drop features on all releases, then I will be the first person here to call them on it. But your post just feels like you're trying to bait people into a BD vs HD argument where there isn't any.

Not trying to start an argument, just stating my opinion. The extras from the r2 release of the Game are out there, but there was just no effort by Universal to get them. There are absolutely posters out there that bash BD relentlessly only to ignore similar problems with hd dvd. CES was another perfect example, all of the vocal pro HDDVD people kept saying "wait till CES" and then when we got nothing at CES it turned into , "its an electronics show, not a studio show". The "importance of the Amazon sales stats are another example. I'm not going to pull quotes, because I am not going to call out people, but they are out there. Fortunately we have seen less and less of it recently.

Never said I was unbiased. I only own BD, so that automatically makes me biased, but I don't go out of my way to take shots at HD DVD

You know you were referring to me so why not just call me out. Look, I already said when Kong came out that it was bullshit. If a disc LOSES extras, that's one thing. If it never had them to begin with, that's another.

And for the record, the R2/3/4 version of The Game didn't even have all the extras from the laserdisc Criterion version either. Should I have not dealt with that either? At least in this case, it's matching the R1 version of The Game and The Jerk. That's all I ask. BD STILL can't do that.
