I don't necessarily mind the lack of extras; it's that $27.95 price tag that a lot of the extra-less titles have that irks me.

Well they might as well call it Superbit.

Yes, exactly. I agree with you too Viper. The cost should justify the content.

One of the many reasons VHS succeeded over BETA was that it cost less to produce and to purchase. If BD is serious about overcoming HDD, then it should either make value in content or pricing. Right now, it may not be in either.

It's obvious why they're leaving off extras in this case (MPEG-2 transfer with uncompressed sound on a BD-25), but it's still disappointing. However, I do hope it will look good, and if nothing else, I have been impressed by MPEG-2 at times (I think The Devil Wears Prada was MPEG-2 on a BD-25 with about fifteen/twenty minutes of HD special features, and it looked excellent).

But yes, this is one of my two major problems with Blu-Ray and its studios in general (though Disney has been bucking the trend lately): poor use of space (the other is pricing). To be fair, Sony looks to be including many of their titles' special features this year (as per the list from CES), but Fox and MGM have been the absolute worst. All in all, there is room for improvement.

RockStrongo 01-17-07 11:26 AM

Any of these discs that I rebuy with no extras, im gonna make my own extras disc. F them. ;)

Yep. I've already decided that I'll be doing the same...if/when I start BDing.

flashburn 01-17-07 11:39 AM

Wow, I remember when this was a thread for announcing new titles.

I'd add one more: Choice of catalog titles. Windtalkers, Hart's War, Bulletproof Monk, Stealth, Flyboys, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, etc.,etc.

Bullitt and The Getaway coming from Warner Feb. 27 on HD and BD, $28.99 a pop.

Dammit! You beat me! :)

Pretty disappointed about Wolves. I've only seen the Extended version and I didn't think there was anything that needed to be cut. It would be hard to watch the theatrical version now. Guess I'll just wait for the inevitable double-dip.

Is there anywhere to pre-order Departed on HD-DVD yet??

fryinpan1 01-18-07 04:26 PM

I guess Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut will not be getting an HD release in February. Hopefully, it will be worth the wait and have some HD exclusive bonus features.

High-definition HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc versions will follow in May (street date TBA).

Blu-ray prices are getting crazy. The MSRP on Casino Royale is going to be $38.96. Sure, you'll be able to find it cheaper...but probably only a few bucks under $30. Starting to remind me of laserdisc prices. :(

You'd think studios would make these CHEAPER (or at least as cheap as) DVDs...the added price isn't going to draw a lot of new people to the format. One of the reasons DVD was so cool at the beginning was that brand-new VHS movies were $100 (because of the rental market) and you could get a better version of the movie PLUS extras on DVD for $20.

Most Blu-rays are $10 more than standard DVD with FEWER (and often NO) extras. :(

Coming to BR and HD on 02/27/07 is something called Nature's Colors by warner music. No idea what its about.

Kocheese99 01-19-07 01:00 PM

It better be BD-50 with extras at that price point. If not - no sale. I mean it BD, I will not purchase single layer, movie-only releases from you, ever.

They seem to be doing good about retaining extras on new release titles.

Looking forward to this.

Yeah, I saw that yesterday and bought it. Should have it Tuesday.

I also picked up Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy today. Haven't seen any reviews for it yet, but it exists.

matome 01-19-07 03:49 PM

Where'd you get Hitchhiker's? A lot of places don't even have it up for order and I forgot about it.

Let us know how it is in the reviews and recommendations thread if you get a chance to watch it.

Laser Blazer in LA. I'll post in the Reviews thread when I watch it. Amazon has it for pre-order, though. Deep Discount, too.

matome 01-19-07 09:06 PM

Thanks. Guess I won't be picking it up locally. LOL

It may have just been an exceptionally poor print at one particular theater, but when I saw this almost every single shot was overwhelmed with layers of thick, heavy grain.
