Why is Fox able to release Eragon and Night at the Museum?

Is this the "Academy Award Lost" Edition?

Unless I'm mistaken, they've cancelled catalog titles but not new releases.

To me, this looks like a straightforward reaction to poor sales. New releases sell, but catalog titles don't. Until things pick up, they're cutting back their support of High-Def.

I don't understand why fox is so panicked when it comes to catalog titles... those movies have been readily 'downloadable' in standard def for months if not years... I don't think piracy is affecting their catalog sales, it's their selection of shitty titles. Most pirates don't even care about HD...I was really looking forward to Master & Commander and factored that into my decision to go blu... totally weak.

fryinpan1 04-10-07 09:32 AM

I would much rather own some of the catalog titles that Fox mentioned at CES and have since postponed/canceled (Edward Scissorhands, Independence Day, Master and Commander, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Predator) than their new releases like Eragon and Night at the Museum.

Going to look very nice on BD. Not too thrilled about the $38.96 price tag.

I don't believe "piracy panic" is what's actually holding up these titles. Piracy would be a LOT more likely to affect sales of newer films, not those which are readily available in SD for less than $10. I really think THAT is the true issue. The DVDs which sell for $20 less and include "added value" material are a lot more attractive to consumers than bare-bones releases which cost 3-4 times as much!

It looks like it is missing the history of the Ghost Rider comic featurete. That sucks. I don't watch most extras, but that is something I would really like to see...:(

Maybe so, but maybe their catalog titles would sell better if they offered some big titles WITH extras.

Fight Club anyone??

It's a Catch 22 scenario. They won't put out their big titles or discs with lots of extras because catalog releases don't sell, but catalog releases don't sell because they won't put out their big titles or discs with lots of extras.

We might be seeing another Sony announcement soon for Summer releases...which includes Lawrence of Arabia, Desperado, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

They shouldnt put the expectation on us to buy them though. Thats a mistake if they are doing that. They should invest and put out great releases. The market will follow.

I'm down for Crouching Tiger and Desperado. White Chicks? No.

I was fortunate enough to see Lawrence of Arabia in a theater a few years ago and this movie was a totally different experience from watching it on DVD. This movie has so much going on and so much detail that high def is a must.

RockStrongo 04-10-07 08:13 PM

None of those appeal to me....Ive watched LOA a few times and just dont have the appreciation that others have.

Overpar 04-10-07 09:17 PM

White Chicks?!!!
How about releasing the good movies on HD first, then drop the turds!

IF it does get announced, it is certainly welcome news that we're finally getting some classic titles from the BD camp. I like action as most people do, but I don't mind when they release stuff that doesn't cater to the young, gamer crowd.

'Rio Bravo' and 'The Cowboys' to Blu-ray and HD DVD on May 22

'Black Christmas' and 'Harsh Times' back one month to early summer.

Both titles had been scheduled for a May 8 release, but the studio confirmed late Tuesday that they have now been slotted for June 12.
