What is funny is that the three Sony reps on the MGM board even voted for MGM to dump Sony as their distributor. :brickwl:
|
True, but I think Sony had an unrealistic expectation of how much they'd stand to benefit from MGM's catalog. MGM has an ungodly large number of titles on their hand, but I remember reading somewhere that the overwhelming amount of money their catalog generates is from a tiny percentage of titles. (90% of revenue from 10% of titles? Something like that.) I'm not sure Sony is equipped to handle that sort of catalog, whereas Fox is.
|
Yep I agree. Sony's primary intention for obtaining those catalog titles was to push Blu-Ray harder, but they failed miserably with it for the short time they had it. I have to wonder if Fox got the nod by that board, to pick up distribution rights, because of their Blu-Ray stance. WB had tremendous interest in the titles from day one but seemed to be passed over in favor of Fox. In this case, Sony wins because they keep the MGM titles on Blu-Ray, and they don't have to worry about creating more percentages for MGM from their back catalog.
Hopefully Fox will have more of an influence at getting films like Robocop cleaned up to be shown in HD. If they release the same crappy disc that reviewers hated months ago I give up! |

As for the Fox/MGM delays, supposedly The Digital Bits and High Def Digest spoke with a Fox rep today to confirm the delays. My problem is that, apparently neither site decided to ask the rep if the delay was to add extras to the discs. That would have been my first question. There really is no reason for this to be classified info. If anything it would get all of us geeks even more psyched up for their releases. I have said over and over that I am not huge on extras. I only watch them for certain movies and Silence of the Lambs is one that I want to see loaded. I was really contemplating not picking it up if it were bare bones. I just sent about 40 DVDs to DVD Planet, but kept SOTL and Hannibal because of this. You would think if they were adding extras, that would have been the first thing the rep said. Fox is really starting to bug me... |

Hopefully, they re-master the audio track to remove that horrible high-pitched whine that made the home video versions literally unwatchable for me.
