just a little Blu-ray-related FYI: Sony has informed us that because the distribution of MGM titles has moved to 20th Century Fox, they'll no longer be releasing the Blu-ray Disc version of RoboCop. It's been pulled from their schedule. Look for it to be rescheduled for release by Fox later this year, once Fox officially announces their first Blu-ray Disc releases.

Does this make my horrid Sony copy a collectible now? :)

This quote was posted over at AVS, but no link to the article. The bold part caught my eye:

"WHV will have a mix of catalog, new movies, day-and-date releases of HD DVD and standard DVD and combo discs providing HD DVD on one side, standard DVD on the other. WHV is planning for as many day-and-date releases as possible, he said. At Universal, 60 HD DVD titles are expected by year-end, said Exec. Vp Ken Graffeo. Some will be day-and-date with standard DVD, others will be on combo discs, he said. HD DVD release of King Kong will be among Universal's key stories this Q4, he said, but he wouldn't give a specific street date."

Releasing the HD DVD version day and date with the extended dvd version sounds like a good idea to me.

Mr. Cinema 08-12-06 07:56 AM

At toshibahddvd.com, these titles are mentioned as coming soon:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
King Kong
Dawn of the Dead Unrated
Frankenstein
Nacho Libre
The Exorcist
The Green Mile
Mission Impossible gift set

I don't know if this good news or bad news since Fox released one of the worst standard DVD's on the market: the TODD-AO version of 'Oklahoma'

I think it is probably 'indifferent' news. I would imagine that the Fox Robocop release will be the exact same disc/transfer, with the same terrible quality. I think the outside box graphics may be the only thing to change.

Mr. Cinema 08-14-06 12:47 PM

excellent. This was a given I think. But it's good to see that this set is coming and. It was listed on toshibahddvd.com and not on the Look and Sound site. Hopefully the rest of their coming soon list will make it out this year.

I'm definitely in for the set.

TDB made a good point...the prelimenary artwork is probably not finished.

I bet the HD releases will not be 2 disc sets. I bet they just used the artwork from the sd 2 disc set for the hd artwork. Thinking about it, why would it need 2 discs??

The special features mentioned would easily fit on one disc and they even talked about a couple features on the sd se not being on the hd releases.

Also, the press release didnt say anything about the hd discs being 2 disc sets. Oh well, still will be a good release either way.

Mr. Cinema 08-14-06 06:29 PM

Plus, the banner said "Paramount DVD".

I thought the features were all shot in HD...not correct?

digitalfreaknyc 08-14-06 07:14 PM

yes, the extras supposedly are in HD.

And re: the sony changes....*sigh*....what else is new?

Black Hawk Down was supposed to be the first BD50 release. No big shock there.

The Bus 08-14-06 08:02 PM

I don't see this mentioned recently, but Ray, Animal House, and Unleashed were moved to tomorrow, according to HD Digest. In case anyone here was looking for them.

I believe I saw Ray early (I also saw Sahara like ~2 weeks early), but did not see Animal House or Unleashed.

Guess it's not so impossible.

The Digital Bits:

Okay... we've got a VERY cool late update for you high-def fans this afternoon. We've spoken to Paramount and learned that BOTH the HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc versions of Mission: Impossible 3 (due 10/30) will be 2-disc sets. The first disc in each set will include the film, while the second will include the majority of the extras. And both discs in each set will be high-definition discs. We've got a complete breakdown for you this afternoon of the extras on the HD versions. All the extras are identical on both high-def versions except where noted (specifically, the commentary). Bonus features actually in 1080 high-definition are indicated with (HD) - the rest are standard definition. Here's the specific details:

The Blu-ray and HD DVD presentations will each be 1080p High Definition with English, French and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus, with English, English SDH+, French and Spanish subtitles and includes the following special features:

Disc One - audio commentary by Tom Cruise and director J.J. Abrams (enhanced with picture-in-picture for HD DVD, audio-only for Blu-ray Disc)

Disc Two - The Making of the Mission documentary (HD), deleted scenes (all in HD including: Ethan fights at the top of the stairs, Zhen fights in the computer room, Musgrave cemetery conversation, Lindsey graduates and Vatican entry extended), Inside the IMF featurette (HD), Mission Action: Inside the Action Unit featurette (HD), Visualizing the Mission featurette (HD), Mission: Metamorphosis featurette (HD), Scoring the Mission featurette (HD), Moviefone Unscripted: Tom Cruise/J.J. Abrams, Launching the Mission (New York, Rome, Paris, London, Tokyo), Mission Marketing: theatrical trailers (HD), TV spots & photo gallery

So this marks the first time we'll see 2-disc sets in either HD format, much less both. Very cool indeed. Should be something to see. You'll find the cover art for both HD versions below. FYI, the 2-disc DVD special edition features the very same extras (save the enhanced part of the commentary) only in standard-definition video.

Mr. Cinema 08-15-06 06:04 AM

I'm surprised MI3 didn't get a TrueHD 5.1 track on the HD DVD release since the 2nd disc has all the extras.

DthRdrX 08-15-06 06:56 AM

New October 24th releases from Universal!

Mr. Cinema 08-15-06 07:16 AM

RockStrongo 08-15-06 08:21 AM

Damn, big news....im in for MI boxset, Out of Sight, 12 Monkeys and The Thing....have to sell my old copies now!

Also, didnt see it mentioned, but hdblog is saying that Nacho Libre is going to be day/date on hd-dvd.

Ok, WB your up to bat.

digitalfreaknyc 08-15-06 08:38 AM
