I wonder if New Line's day-and-date releases will be combos or not...

Mr. Cinema 08-09-06 07:31 PM

From video business online:

"The Mob is coming to HD DVD.

HBO Video has set The Sopranos: Season 6, Part 1 as the studio’s first title to be released on the high-definition format.

It’s slated for release on Nov. 7 (prebook Oct. 3), the same day that the previously announced standard-definition DVD will be released.

The HD DVD version will carry a suggested retail price of $129.95; the standard disc is priced at $99.95, like previous DVD editions of the Emmy Award-winning show.

HBO plans to issue the title on Blu-ray Disc in 2007. Other season set of The Sopranos also are set for next year."

flashburn 08-09-06 07:32 PM

Nice to see HBO on board, but ouch at that price. Being that I already have all of the other seasons on DVD, I think I will stick with that release.

I hope they release "A Bronx Tale" on HD DVD soon, that would make my day.

Mr. Cinema 08-09-06 07:37 PM

Yeah, the price jumped out at me. HBO is usually expensive when it comes to season sets. Here's hoping Entourage debuts sooner rather than later.

bboisvert 08-09-06 07:55 PM

Ouch. I'm probably in for a purchase... even at that price. But ouch.

DthRdrX 08-09-06 08:13 PM

Never watched the show so I won't be starting with Season 6. I'll wait until prices come down on TV sets.

wewantflair 08-09-06 08:29 PM

Figure it this way - if the regular DVD is 59-69 on release week, you can expect at least some discount off MSRP for the HD version. I'll probably snag it no matter what though.

Supermallet 08-09-06 08:31 PM

I love The Sopranos but I may wait for the price to drop a bit.

Then again, with the Amazon deal, that is $12 off, plus their normal pre-order discount. So it could be worth it.

Rusty James 08-09-06 09:32 PM

No "Cars" or POTC 2 on Blu-Ray this year. Looks like Disney is taking the same wait-and-see approach as New Line Cinema.

Disney’s biggest summer hits Cars and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest won’t be coming to Blu-ray this year, company president and CEO Bob Iger confirmed during the studios third-quarter earnings call Wednesday morning.

“We need a few things in terms of platform penetration,” Iger said. “It’s still early in the life of next-generation DVD to predict. In all likelihood, adoption of next-gen DVD will be slower to market than standard-definition DVD, which was rather dramatic.”

Looking at the Look and Sound of Perfect website, I noticed Scoop was added to the list.

Shannon Nutt 08-10-06 05:37 AM

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but Goblet of Fire is on its way to HD-DVD as well.

Mr. Cinema 08-10-06 05:48 AM

POTC 2 won't be out because it'll probably look like crap if they try to release it on mpeg 2 - 25gb disc with 0 features. They're likely waiting and hoping that the 50gb will actually work.

Supermallet 08-10-06 05:56 AM

One of the big reasons Sony is with BD is because of BD-J, the interactive layer on Blu-ray, which, so far, hasn't been used at all. I'm sure they're waiting for more applications for that layer before they bring out the big guns.

I can't wait until these big titles get released. I'm more concerned that Universal hasn't said anything about King Kong's arrival. I really hope that has True HD 5.1 as well...

with all the extras and the 'Goblet of Fire's' running time of 157min I'd imagine the Blu-Ray would look like shit.

Mr. Cinema 08-10-06 08:33 AM

If the BD does get released anytime soon after the HD DVD and in its current form, I don't expect to see the True HD track or many of the features. They'll probably wait and see if 50gb actually happens.

Oh God, im sure it would. Im wondering if the hd-dvd transfer will suffer at all due to all the audio formats, special features and IME. Im hoping there was no compromise to the video. This will be a good test of total bitrate too (running TruHD with IME at the same time).

I wonder if they allow IME and TruHD to be accessible in the same viewing.

Not likely. The IME feature has its own audio.

RockStrongo 08-10-06 12:25 PM

Aug 29th might be the release date for HP...

Noticed that too. Wasn't that a rumored date on one of the sites? Along with Batman? Maybe they'll do that and T3. That'd be sweet.

Yep, that would be nice...That date has been thrown around for a while now....I bet we get something good on that day. Knock on wood.

The Bus 08-10-06 01:42 PM

I'ts highly unlikely that it will come out in 3 weeks with no retailer warning. That's just an asinine move.

Highly unlikely? You're right. They usually give ONE weeks notice.

DthRdrX 08-10-06 01:57 PM

Hddvd.org is saying Aug. 29th as well. Who knows where the date is coming from.
